When Shawn Sorenson drowned in 1987, no one in La Crosse, Wisconsin, took much notice. They thought it was simply another drunken accident. When another student, Tad Schwartz, drowned a year later, the residents began to suspect foul play. Why else would a healthy young man drown? Even so, the police had no leads or clues to suggest anything other than a tragic accident. Were these truly accidental deaths? Suspicion became reality one fateful morning in 2011 when Police Detective Allan Rouse, Sheriff's Deputy Charlie Berzinski, and pathologist Rick Olson pulled the 15th victim from the river. The body had a tale to tell.

Dr. Olson, physician Patricia Grebin, and researcher Sarah Giles discover an obscure piece of evidence. It leads Berzinski and Rouse down a tangled trail of clues before reaching a mind-boggling conclusion. Will Berzinski and Rouse catch the killer before it's too late? Filled with intrigue, betrayal, and gut-twisting suspense, Death by Drowning will draw readers into a Midwestern town full of secrets and clues as breathtaking as the Mississippi River.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?
The discipline to get started is the worst part of the process for me. At the start, it seems like a process that will never end. Once the first chapter has been written, though, things settle down and get easier. Then it’s a matter of seeing how exciting the plot you create can be.

What songs are most played on your iPod?
No iPod in my office. I have Sirius XM linked to my desktop, and you will find me listening to Garth Brooks, Frank Sinatra, or instrumentalists on Escape. It all depends upon the mood – Garth for the action parts, Sinatra and Escape for more mellow times.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?
I do, but not a particularly formal group. They are people who read the first book and made suggestions. Now they do it whenever there is a new book. I like their suggestions, because they tell it like it is.

What book are you reading now?
I have just started the new Clive Cussler book, The Romanov Ransom. My previous read was The Reckoning, by John Grisham and I moved through that at a fast pace. If you are an avid reader, a good book just keeps you going, and then when it’s over, you feel sad.

How did you start your writing career?
I believe I always loved to read . . . or at least I remember reading when I was a very young boy. Books and sports were my favorite things. I dreamed about writing for a newspaper, and started by doing some sports stories for my hometown weekly newspaper. I could not believe it when I got a job covering basketball tournaments for the Winona Daily News my senior year in high school. Not sure how many times I re-wrote that first story, but it was a lot.

Tell us about your next release.

My fourth book features the same two law officers that you have met in books one through three. This time they are chasing moonshiners and cattle rustlers. Both my father and my father-in-law were great storytellers, and they talked often about moonshine and rustling. It just seemed fitting to use those messages as the heart of another mystery, Death by Explosion.

What if the job you took to stay alive might be what kills you?

Kade knows what it is to suffer. He knows what it's like to lose everything and everyone around him.

His job in a Stormer Unit guarantees not just his survival in the decimated country of Azetaria, but his sister Meg's. Even if it means facing the Numachi warriors baying for his blood, he'll do what it takes to keep her safe.

Hadley is alone and surviving the only way she knows how. By hiding where predators won't find her and scavenging enough just to keep her alive.

When desperation drives Hadley to search for her missing brother, she mistakenly accepts the offer of recruitment into the Stormer's camp, only to be partnered with Kade and sent as a scout into Numachi territory.

The intimidating young Stormer may just know where her brother has gone. But can they stay alive long enough to find him?

Excerpt

Kade’s footsteps were heavy as he approached and stared down at her. “This isn’t going to work. You need to be wearing something lighter, or we’ll never make it to Lazen.”

Hadley tried for a weak shrug but could barely muster the energy. “What do you suggest?”

Kade raised an eyebrow, and a deep frown appeared on his face as he considered her.  He continued to stare at her as she sat, legs sprawled out on the ground. “The best I can come up with is cutting your clothing.”

His eyes narrowed as he searched the length of her. A bolt of alarm jostled her into thinking. “How much are you cutting off?”

Kade dipped his chin, his voice low as he spoke. “Enough, so you don’t keep fainting, enough, so you still pass for a boy.”

He reached for a knife and wore the slightest of smiles as he unsheathed it. “Let’s hope you have hairy legs then eh?”

Hadley’s lips split into a smile before she remembered she was annoyed with him for being so smug.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

Finding the time to write. As a wife and mom with a full-time 9-5 job, I’m left with only about 2 hours each night to dedicate to marketing, research, writing, and editing. I have a notebook full of story ideas and never enough time to write.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

Lots of pop hits from the 90s plus just about every album from Creed and Breaking Benjamin.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

Yes. A good friend from college invited me to join a writing group, which meets via conference call. We socialize, read, and offer constructive criticism on each other’s works.

What book are you reading now?

At the moment, reading has taken a backseat to working on the sequel to Leather and Lies. However, the book sitting on the top of my TBR pile is Look Alive Twenty-Five by Janet Evanovich. I can’t get enough Stephanie Plum antics.

How did you start your writing career?

I’ve been writing fiction as a hobby since elementary school. It’s cathartic for me. I was about half way through penning Leather and Lies when I realized it might be good enough to pursue publication. I got a ton of fabulous advice from a romance author friend that led me to enter Leather and Lies into some romantic suspense contests. I was fortunate enough to become a finalist in some of those contests, which helped bolster my query letters. The rest, as they say, is history.

Tell us about your next release.

My next release will likely be the as-yet-unnamed sequel to Leather and Lies. It will once again follow criminal profiler Skye Winters, this time as she begins her career in Washington D.C. It begins with the murder of a Senator, and the political intrigue deepens from there. I’m also working on a stand-alone second chance romance masquerading as a murder mystery as well as a paranormal romantic suspense novella.

Agapanthus was kidnapped when she was only two years old, but she doesn’t remember it. In fact, she doesn’t remember her home planet at all. All she knows is Deeyae, the land of two suns; the land of great, red waters. Her foster-family cares for her, and at first that’s enough. But, as she grows older, Agapanthus is bothered by the differences between them. As an Exchanger, she’s frail and tall, not short and strong. And, even though she was raised Deeyan, she certainly isn’t treated like one. One day, an Exchanger boy completes the Deeyan rite-of-passage, and Agapanthus is inspired to try the same. But, when she teams up with him, her quest to become Deeyan transforms into her quest to find the truth―of who she is, and of which star she belongs to.

Interview

• What is the hardest part of writing your books?

The hardest part is the first page. It's always difficult to jump into a new world with new characters. It takes a while to get into the rhythm of a novel!

• What songs are most played on your Ipod?

Four Out of Five by Arctic Monkeys, Youth by Glass Animals, and Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 17 in G major!

• Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

Not exactly, but I do have friends and family read my manuscripts.

• What book are you reading now?

"The Left Hand of Darkness" by my favorite author, Ursula Le Guin.

• How did you start your writing career?

I've wanted to be a published author since I was in third grade! My first time writing a novel was in a high school creative writing class, and even though that didn't come out too well, my next novel attempt did, and I had my first book, "Call of the Sun Child," published while still in college.

• Tell us about your next release.

My newest novel, "The Seas of Distant Stars," was just released in August! I also have another manuscript in the works that I hope to get published eventually, with themes focusing on climate change, plastic pollution, and industrial agriculture.

Mahlorie hates her braces. And who cares what she looks like anyway? Her parents sure do. Dad, a traveling magician, and Mom, a famous erotica author, constantly harp on the importance of appearance. Her best friend Shai is the epitome of pop-culture, crushing on every boy with a cute smile. But when Mal has a near-death experience and can suddenly hear a boy’s voice in her head, life takes a turn for the weird. He can hear her too. How did her braces become transmitters? And who is this boy she just might be falling in love with? For fans of “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Everything, Everything.”

 INTERVIEW

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

The actual WRITING. I can find everything else in the world to do but sit down in front of my laptop and type. Once I get started though, the story always flows so easy as if I’m watching a film and dictating. So I wake up every morning, Monday through Friday, and set an hour timer to write. This gives me about 1,000 words a day, which is perfect!

What songs are most played on your Iphone?

I usually listen to composers on Pandora. My favorite is Hans Zimmer radio, but I also love Danny Elfman and John Williams.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

I use different beta readers for each draft of the book, with the exception of a handful. Once I make changes to a draft, I can’t use the same reader because they have already experienced the story so they’ll either a) notice the change, not the story or b) wonder why I didn’t take their suggestion.

What book are you reading now?

Mortal Instruments, book 1.

How did you start your writing career?

I went to tons of writing conferences, found a great critique group, read a billion books on craft, and wrote draft after draft until I felt like my work could compete with the books on the shelves of a brick and mortar store.

Tell us about your next release.

Metal Mouth originated as a dream that woke me up laughing out loud. A girl wearing braces gets struck by lightning, and now they’re transmitting a boy’s voice inside her head. She has to figure out if he’s real, and if so, why has the universe brought them together. It’s a sweet, fun book that deals with some serious topics such as self-image, drinking and driving, and boundaries. The story will make you laugh, cry, and leave with “the feels” in your heart.

Lizzy Adams spent the summer pining for Tyson Smith, the sexy security agent whose instruction at a safety seminar saved her life. Now, every man she meets is measured against the absolute awesomeness of the brawny black man with the soulful eyes, the baritone voice that whispers over her like a velvet caress, and a smile that turns her knees to jelly. Now she just had to get him to notice her.

Tyson Smith had a lot of respect for Lizzy Adams, the spunky teacher who freed herself from the clutches of a deranged miscreant who’d wanted to take her hostage. But his concept of her wholesome ‘girl-next-door’ image was challenged the night she showed up at a company barbeque dressed as a flirty cowgirl. Always the gentleman, he managed to keep his eyes off her assets as she strolled around the farm. His mother had raised him better, but there was no denying that she was every man’s ‘American Beauty’ fantasy. But the night he’d shown up at her doorstep to help her out altered their relationship forever. Between the fear in her eyes and the baseball bat perched on her shoulder, his protective side surfaced, and he handed her a piece of his heart.

Their whirlwind romance is threatened when a man from Lizzy’s past attacks her. Sam Clark wants vengeance for his son. He blames the jurors from Jason’s trial for Jason’s death and crafts a hit list. But killing Lizzy, the scrappy survivor, is harder than he thought. After Sam fails at his first attempt on Lizzy’s life, he resolves to kill her before he’s forced into hiding. He just has to get past the big, black man who appointed himself Lizzy’s protector.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

Finding uninterrupted time in our house is a challenge. During the school year, I write while my girls are at school. During the summer, while I type away at our dining room table, my girls frequently ask me questions and want me to take them places. I love being with them, and realize how precious my time with them is, so my writing pace is much slower in the summer.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

I love to use the music apps on my phone. When I first started using them, one of my daughters was fixated on Taylor Swift. Now, according to the apps, I am a country music fan. I’ve become a fan of Florida Georgia Line, and I haven’t heard an Ed Sheeran song that I didn’t love.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

I am fortunate to have two beta readers. They offer their insight and guidance regarding storyline and character development. Many thanks to Carol and Beth for their support.

What book are you reading now?

I LOVE my Kindle app on my phone. If my eyes aren’t glued to the tiny screen, then I have my ear buds in and I’m listening to a book. I’m currently listening to The Trapped Girl by Robert Dugoni.

How did you start your writing career?

I’ve always thought it would be cool to write a book. In college, (while studying elementary education) in my literacy courses, I’d peruse the picture books and nonfiction children’s books and dream about writing my own book. At the time, it seemed impossible, but as the internet expanded and companies like Amazon grew, the dream started to take shape and become a reality. When my twin daughters went to kindergarten, I set aside time each day to write. Surprisingly, the story that unfolded in my head was not for elementary students, but it was better suited for young adults who enjoy supernatural thrillers. When I finished the first series, The Scintillate Series, I transitioned to adult romantic suspense and began The Savage Security Series, which now finished with the sixth book, Lizzy’s Kiss.

Tell us about your next release.

I am currently working on The Making of Daisy Hart. It’s the first book of my new contemporary romance series. This book introduces readers to Avenel, a beautiful resort town on the Hidden Banks Islands off the coast of North Carolina. Cassie Bowmont visits Avenel with her head full of stories and her heart full of hope. Her goal for the summer is to write a romance novel that will transition her from her teaching career to a full-time author. Unsure of what the future holds, she expects to hunker down in a beach cottage with her laptop and an ensemble of characters in her mind, but a chance meeting with a handsome man during a raging storm introduces her to a muse she can’t refuse.

Most people make at least one really harebrained decision in their life. Just ask Tony Piza. Deciding he needs a “paid vacation” for a year after college, Tony lands a job teaching at a Catholic elementary school. Talk about the Moby Dick of miscalculations. His pathetic effort is making him look bad, crimping his love life, and leaving him feeling guilty. A new approach, fueled by his irreverent humor, makes him a hit with his students. But it riles the powers that be. A showdown seems inevitable. Whether he can survive it—well, that’s something else.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

I’d have to say keeping my word count down. I have a tendency to be somewhat verbose (which accounts for an appalling dearth of invitations to social events). In my defense, however, I practiced law for many years. The unofficial lawyer’s creed is: never say in ten words what you can say in fifty. That comes primarily from writing legal briefs, where you try to nail down every possible detail and scenario. Leave nothing to the imagination. Great for making your point to a judge; not so much for writing a novel.

For example, the first draft of “Mr. Pizza” was 113,500 words. The finished manuscript was 95,000. Try making 18,500 words vanish, and you’ll feel my pain. (My eyes are welling up. Just give me a sec.  . . .Okay, I’m good.) Fortunately, it’s not nearly as big a problem for me now as it was when I first started writing fiction. But it still rears its head at times.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

Hmm. My taste in music is all over the proverbial map. Being of an age where I’m on the cusp of giving Methuselah a run for his money, there’s a lot of 60s songs in there. But I also have a good selection of classical. And I love Brazilian jazz. (Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and such.)

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

I do, indeed. In addition to my son (the ultimate beta reader) and other trusted family members and friends, I belong to a writers’ group. We have about ten members who are regulars, and we meet twice a month. Each of us reads an excerpt from our most recent effort, and the others point out what they feel worked and what didn’t. If you’re thinking about becoming an author, and you want to develop the thick skin needed to show your work to the public, join a writers’ group. You’ll have nightmares and intense feelings of unworthiness for the first few months, but that subsides—usually. Most local libraries should have information on groups in your area.

What book are you reading now?

I just finished “Where the Crawdads Sing”, by Delia Owens. A really good read, by the way. And I’m about to start “The Tuscan Child”,  by Rhys Bowen. I just realized I’m only reading books by authors with “owen” in their name. Anyone have the number of a good therapist?

How did you start your writing career?

I always loved writing, and wrote poems and humorous (to me, anyway) essays over the years, just for my own pleasure. A couple of years ago I needed a change of pace, so I transitioned out of the law and into writing. My son and I co-wrote three children’s books, “The Adventures of Mophie and Picholas” series. Then I wrote a flash fiction piece for adults, titled “Psychology for Dummies”, and it won an award. Someone actually liked my stuff! Now what?

I taught at a Catholic elementary school immediately after college, and for the past several years there was this thought meandering in the recesses of my brain that my year of teaching could serve as a backdrop for a story about a cocky young teacher who’s in over his head. (Not that I was in over my head, mind you. Cough.) Thus, “Mr. Pizza”.

Tell us about your next release.

Fortunately, the reviews for “Mr. Pizza” have been terrific. (I’ve just recently started breathing normally again.) Several of the reviewers expressed an interest in seeing what becomes of our protagonist, young Tony Piza. I’d been leaning toward a sequel, because I felt there was more of his story to tell. So that’s what I’m going to do.

I haven’t finalized a storyline as yet. What I do know is that it’s going to pick up twelve years after the first book ends. He was only 22 in the first book, and I wanted him to get a little more of life under his belt. I’ll bring back a few of the characters from the original story, and add some new ones from this current period in his life. I’m hoping to publish at some point in the first half of 2019 (assuming I can keep that damn runaway verbiage under control).

J. F. Pandolfi went to Fordham University as an undergrad, then taught at a Catholic elementary school before attending Fordham Law School.

Practicing law certainly had its moments, but to call it "utter euphoria"—well, that was a stretch. Plus, the voices that had taken up residency in his head (rent-free, the deadbeats) kept insisting that he share his writing with the world. An award for his flash fiction piece, "Psychology for Dummies", convinced him that the voices might be on to something. And so he called upon his fond memories as a teacher, which served as a backdrop to his debut novel, "Mr. Pizza".

J. F. also briefly believed he had won the New York City Marathon. Alas, it turned out to be a dream, apparently brought on by an acute case of restless leg syndrome.

A staunch supporter of the fight to eradicate adult illiteracy, J. F. was accorded a Special Recognition in Literacy Award for his efforts.
