The Hunger Games meets Romeo and Juliet in a stunning debut about a forbidden romance between a young activist and a government employee for a corrupt bureau that controls the population by deciding who lives and who dies.
Roman Irvine is a disgruntled IT Technician for the Divinity Bureau, a government agency that uses random selection to decide who lives and who dies. In a world where overpopulation has lead to pollution, a crippled economy, and a world in crisis, he’s accepted the bureau’s activities as a necessity… until he meets April McIntyre.
April has every reason to be suspicious of Roman. He works for the Divinity Bureau, which sent her father to an early grave. But he’s also sweet and loyal, and unbeknownst to her, he saved her life. As Roman and April fall deeper in love, the deeper they’re thrust into the politics of deciding who lives and who dies. Someone wants April dead. And the bureau’s process of random selection may not be so random after all…
Interview
What is the hardest part
of writing your books?
For me, the hardest part of writing is not
letting life get in the way of your dreams. I’ve dreamt since I was a kid of
writing a book, but writing is a practice that requires a lot of discipline. It
sounds easy in theory, but try doing that when you’re trying to balance school
or work – or when your friends are hitting you up to go to the bar, and you know there’s a cute guy that’s going to
be there! I’ve said ‘no’ to a lot of things I regretted in the moment in the
name of writing “The Divinity Bureau,” but it’s also opened a lot more
opportunities than I would’ve gotten otherwise.
What songs are most
played on your Ipod?
So, my music
tastes have two sides: on one side, there’s the music that I use for writing.
That one mostly consists of instrumental music (think, James Newton Howard,
John Murphy, and David Arkenstone). And then, there’s the music I listen to for
fun. I honestly saw a Ranker list for “Basic B*tch” songs, and I was
embarrassed to say that it looked like a compilation of my playlist (you can
find it here).
Do you have critique partners
or beta readers?
I’m part of a
few writing groups and I’ve gotten beta readers through that over the years
that I was writing “The Divinity Bureau.” Honestly, I just let anyone and
everyone read my work whenever I’m in the process of writing it. Most of my
most in-depth feedback has come from other writers, though.
What book are you
reading now?
Candace
Robinson’s new book, “The Bride of Glass!” I was fortunate to get an ARC, and
I’m really enjoying it so far!
How did you start your
writing career?
I guess you
can say my “writing career” started when I was seven (even though it wasn’t
until my adulthood that I started to make money off it). During Halloween in
1999 (yes, I’m a youngster), my second-grade class was asked to write a
Halloween story. I decided to write a story about an evil witch that decided to
become good. It was quite awful, but my second-grade teacher thought it was so
cute and submitted it to the local newspaper.
My book, “The
Divinity Bureau,” comes out September 21st. It’s a dystopian romance
about a forbidden love between a young activist and a government employee, set
in a world where a corrupt government bureau decides who lives and who dies by
random selection. I’m really excited for you all to read it!
