Veterinarian Piper is pragmatic enough to know her marriage wasn't working, which is why she left Dylan a year ago and pretends it hasn't hurt like hell every day since. Then Dylan calls out of the blue and tells her to come right away for an animal emergency. Piper arrives on the ranch that used to be her home to find her horse savagely killed. She can't fathom what could have done it. One thing, however, is obvious. Piper still loves Dylan.
Dylan isn't over Piper, not by a long shot. After her horse was ripped apart by something he's pretty sure wasn't a bear, it feels so good to hold Piper in his arms again. If only they could find a way to undo the mess that drove them apart.
An epic blizzard hits, trapping Piper and Dylan on the ranch for what just might be their one chance at reuniting. But as things get a whole lot scarier, it's clear something evil has brought them together.
Hunted by the supernatural, they must fight for their lives, but can they also fight for their love?
What is the hardest part of writing
your books?
I find the hardest
part of writing my books to be the paralyzing perfectionism that stops me even
starting. That’s why I love NaNoWriMo and writing in bursts. No inner editor
allowed. Just write!
What songs are most played on your
Ipod?
I tend to
have different playlists for each book. I wrote a romance about a female professional
surfer and had The Beach Boys, Pearl Jam, Jack Johnson, and King Gizzard and
the Wizard Lizard on there to get me in the mood. For Old Cravings, I listened to
Lori McKenna’s album, The Bird and the Rifle. My music taste is as eclectic as
my reading—all over the place, but a lot of alternative.
Do you have critique partners or beta
readers?
Over the
years, I’ve gone to a critique group where we bring ten pages to read out loud.
That’s useful for instant feedback and to gauge if a section dragged. I also
have a small critique group with two other women. We send each other either
large chunks, or the entire book, which is great for the big picture. My beta
readers are a few family and friends that I trust to be honest.
What book are you reading now?
I work in a
school library and public library. One hazard of my workplace is constantly
seeing another book I want and reading too many at once. I just finished The Flatshare
by Beth O’Leary, Kelley Armstrong’s A Stitch in Time, which was a fun time
travel ghost story, and Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. Right now, I’m reading
Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology, Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying (trying to be
literary, but not understanding a lot), and the children’s book Twilight of the
Elves, the sequel to the fantastic Adventurer’s Guild by Clark and Eliopulos. I
need to limit myself to one book at a time.
How did you start your writing career?
I’ve been
writing since preschool. With the exception of a couple of creative writing
classes in college, I let it go through high school and my early twenties. I returned
to it as a serious pursuit after I had my second child. My husband was wonderful
about giving me an hour every single evening when our kids were really young to
just write. That writing time saved my sanity, and I wrote many books over the
years. It’s been a long road of writing and rewriting and critique groups and workshops
and querying agents before Old Cravings found its home with a small publisher.
Tell us about your next release.
I hope this
will be my next release. The current book I’m working on in my Scary Good
Romance brand is called Branching Out. It’s about a woman named Willow. She
lives in Oregon and runs a raptor center to rescue and rehabilitate birds of
prey. In order to fund her center, she’s opened up a tree house hotel. Jake,
someone Willow knew when she was younger, pulls a stupid prank on some guests
staying in one of the tree houses and ends up breaking off a tree limb. This
wakes up something terrifying within the tree. Willow has to join forces with Jake
to stop it, and she’s less than thrilled because Jake happens to be the son of
the owner of the logging company that brought Willow’s family nothing but
heartache. As she and Jake work together against an evil that threatens everything
Willow loves, she’s shocked to find herself wondering if that might include Jake
himself.
About the Author
Joy enjoys imagining something creepy in every situation, starting with a fourth-grade theater production when she became convinced a monster lived under the stage. She might not let different foods touch on her plate, but she’s fearless when it comes to mixing love stories and horror in her scary good romances. Joy is currently a school librarian, but has worked in a pet store, a safari park, and vet hospitals and holds a Zoology degree. Animals always feature in her writing. On a good day, her two cats and two pugs make room on the couch for Joy and her family. They live outside Denver, where Joy experiences frequent shaming that she’s never gone skiing in her life. She enjoys reading, traveling, board games, and going with her English husband to explore castles in Britain, where she finds plenty of romantic, spooky inspiration.
