You can begin the journey to the end.
Three years passed since that night. I pressed my hand
harder into the brick wall. The military jacket still held some of Tom’s smell.
As I breathed it, I pressed harder into the wall. I could feel the pain, but
the sensations of that night overpowered the pain. The perfection of each kiss.
The feel of his skin against mine. Then the fire, the intensity, the glorious
burning in every part of my soul. I touched the universe itself. I became
everything. At that moment, I became my past, my present, and my future. A
thousand faces filled my vision. Tom was forgotten. The only thing left was the
darkness surrounding the flames consuming me. In the middle, a face stood out.
It was the unknown demon. Beautiful and dangerous.
I didn't leave the city, just my life. Second hand from a
local charity replaced my designer clothes. A homeless shelter replaced the
gorgeous apartment. I lived under a fake name and gave up trying to work. I
gave up trying to live. Some days I would sleep on the hard concrete on a
sidewalk. I was an oddity amid the tragedy surrounding me. Life’s cruelty had
landed everyone else around me on the streets. I chose to hide, wondering each
day why I couldn’t just let myself die. On the streets, I felt safe. I was a
murderer and more dangerous than any person walking the streets. I kept a knife
with me in case someone misbehaved, because I needed to protect everyone from
me.
Eventually, in a
little corner of the abandoned warehouse, a few blocks from that bar, hidden
from the world, and forgotten by the lost souls surrounding me, I found solace.
With bits of paper, pencils, and colors, I made art. In the warehouse's
darkness, I returned to the thousand faces I saw the night Tom died. One face
stood out. The demon was a part of everything. He called out to me, and I hated
him. He represented everything I despised about myself.
