Juvenile Fiction / Pets / Humor / Mystery

Date Published: May 14, 2024

Publisher: Lucid Books

Rooster, a handsome Golden Retriever who loves belly rubs and bacon, and Squid, a mangy grey cat who loves big naps and butt scratches, are an unlikely duo. Even though their early days were spent scrounging for food and seeking shelter, they knew they were meant for more. As luck would have it, they were rescued by the town veterinarian and welcomed into the best family ever.

Life with their new family is never boring. In Bowling Burglar, a family picnic in the backyard is interrupted by breaking glass and a scream from next door. As the mystery unfolds, Rooster and Squid are smack dab in the middle of the chaos.

INTERVIEW

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

Initially, the hardest part was remembering all the grammar and punctuation rules I had forgotten since fourth grade. Now, the most challenging part of writing is finding a chunk of quiet time to put my thoughts on paper. With a retired husband, four animals, and three children in the house, quiet is a ridiculous notion!

What are your most played songs?

I would love to say my musical taste is classical or spiritual, but my playlist looks something like this…

Gangsta’s Paradise by Coolio

Welcome to the Jungle by Guns N’ Roses

You Proof by Morgan Wallen

Heart Like a Truck by Lainey Wilson

And… Standing Outside the Fire by Garth Brooks

(These songs might not be spiritual, but I think they are all classics!)

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

From the beginning, I have had an incredible coach in my corner. Don Stockard, who is a published author, is a longtime client and friend. He reviewed my first story in the Rooster and Squid series and told me it had real potential. He has helped with editing along the way - dotting my I’s and crossing my T’s. He also keeps me grounded with honest feedback and enough sarcasm to sink the Titanic.

What book are you reading now?

I like lighthearted reads where you get to know the characters and their relationships with a town, a community, or a family. I just finished …

The Wish by Nicholas Sparks

But some of my other favorites are…

The May Day series by Jess Lourey

The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg

and A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

How did you start your writing career?

I am a small animal veterinarian, who after 25 years of clinical practice had the opportunity to retire. It was a huge blessing, but with it came the question, ‘What now?’. I have always had a creative spirit, and after a career of being extremely detailed and technical, my brain needed something more fun and flexible. I always loved making up stories for my kids when they were younger and thought I would try to put pen to paper.

I have always believed as a veterinarian that we would see fewer sick pets if our clients were better educated. So, I decided to combine a great children’s story with veterinary education. I think it is a hit!

Tell us about your next release.

The next release in the Rooster and Squid series is the fourth book titled Auto Shop Arsonist. In it, someone is setting fires around Trout Springs, and when the flames burn close to home, Rooster and Squid end up in the middle of a blazing whodunit! While solving the mystery with the help of their friends, Rooster and Squid also share tips on osteoarthritis, chocolate toxicity, allergies, lacerations, and some fun facts about super sniffers!
