WOULD YOU SACRIFICE AN ENTIRE CITY TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE?

A massive explosion rips through the outdoor seating area of a popular restaurant in downtown Trondheim. Two days later, fourteen people are found dead in a church along a remote section of coastline. The souls of the victims have been ripped from their bodies. Moments later a spirit from the Otherworlds steps through the Black Void to find the ancient relic that killed them.

On a secluded island in the Arctic Circle, a troubled man sees a world that has lost its way and feels compelled to change that. He plans to wield the formidable power of a mysterious artifact to reshape the moral fabric of eight billion unsuspecting souls—knowing that his actions will wipe out the inhabitants of an entire city.

David Skye and Jade “Epiphany” Hendrix set out to stop him and save the lives that would be lost if he were to succeed. Their efforts to do that are complicated by Kari Salversen, a dedicated police detective with the Norwegian Police Service. She believes David and Epiphany are involved in a recent string of deadly attacks and is determined to apprehend them.

A reckoning of souls is quickly approaching, as the battle for humanity unfolds in the snowy, arctic fjords of Norway, and the vast spirit realms of the Otherworlds. The possibility of a peaceful future for billions of souls and the lives of tens of thousands of innocent people are both at stake. In a clash that pits two opposing sides against each other, which one is on the more righteous path?

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?
Developing and refining the details around the core idea of the story is something I often struggle with. I can generally come up with the big idea for a story, but getting my arms around all of the minute details needed to make it work can sometimes be difficult. In “A Reckoning of Souls”, I knew the central theme would be about a person who sets out to make the world a better place by altering every soul on the planet. How he would accomplish that was unclear to me at the onset. Would it be through magic, through some special innate power, through the help of some mystical being, etc.?

What are your most played songs?

In addition to being a writer I am also a composer of contemporary instrumental music, so I’m not sure if your question pertains to what I listen to when I write, or to songs I have written as a composer. Therefore, I’ll answer it both ways.

When I write, I like to listen to majestic (mostly) instrumental music. My playlist when writing “A Reckoning of Souls” relied heavily on the following music/artists:
I giorni by Ludivico Einaudi
Ink by Mattia Cupelli
The Earth Prelude by Ludivico Einaudi
Nightbook by Ludivico Einaudi
Sopra il Cielo (Above the Sky) by Mattia Cupelli
Harry’s Game by Clannad
Now We Are Free by Lisa Gerrard

The most played songs that I have written include the following:
Singing With Angels By Waterfalls from my “The Undiscovered Horizon” CD
A Day In The Woods from my “Mother Earth Symphony” CD
Quite a few songs from my fifth CD titled “Into The Unknown” have been getting a lot of airplay on Spotify and Apple Music.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

Yes I do. Two friends of mine are avid readers: Laurel D. helped me immensely by reading earlier versions of my book and provided what would be equivalent to copy editing; and Barbe F. provided the equivalent of developmental editing (getting into the nuts and bolts of the story, what it was about, and how the story flowed). Laurel made me a better writer and Barbe made me a better storyteller. My wife, Mary has been with me every step of the way and has probably read just about every version of this book. My son, Zach also read and provided valuable feedback.

What book are you reading now?

I’m about to start “Every Dead Thing” (A Charlie Parker thriller) by John Connolly. It was recommended to me by one of my brothers-in-law who has similar reading interests as I do.

How did you start your writing career?

Writing novels has been something I’ve always wanted to do. For many, many years I have been compiling various story ideas in an old three-ring binder. Finally, I reached a point in my life where I was ready to commit to sitting down and writing my first novel, “A Reckoning of Souls.” The story went through four or five iterations over a period of six or seven years. It wasn’t until the last year-and-a-half that I decided to stop dabbling with it and really focus my attention on finishing it.

Tell us about your next release.

I’ve been compiling ideas for four other books, all unrelated to each other and to “A Reckoning of Souls.” The one I am going to focus on next will be a spacefaring sci-fi thriller that involves two women whose thoughts are connected across five light-years of space. It will explore how far people are willing to go to save themselves and the toll they are willing to exact on others to accomplish their end goals. I’d really like to delve into interesting facets of human consciousness.
