He and his colleagues quickly realize that Earth will no longer be able to sustain life in a few years. Environmental disasters all over the world are occurring at a quicker rate, and each one seems to be stronger than the previous one. As a result, Tom begins to develop and carry out his plans to build 4 spaceships for 1,000 people each to leave Earth and travel to a new galaxy to find a place to live. The Russians, Germans, and Australians all agree to build spaceships and join Tom in search of a new home somewhere in the Alpha Centauri Galaxy.

Over the next 20 years of planning Tom along with his wife, Sarah, determined but naïve son, Sam, his loyal second-in-command, Bob Jackson, and an amazing medical doctor, Dr. Sato, Tom must wrestle with inevitable questions. How are they going to sustain life for such a long journey? How can they travel fast enough? Will the Russians fully cooperate? How will they be able to successfully launch four huge spaceships at the same time? Most of all, will they be able to save humanity?

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

A few facts about myself:  I became almost totally deaf at the age of 13 from measles. I woke one morning and realized I had lost my hearing. As a result, I am also fluent in American Sign Language. One of the drawbacks is I cannot listen to audible books. It is difficult to write conversations when you have not hard how people talk in so many years.

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

The hardest part about writing So Long Earth is that I use real-life characters and a lot of real science in a sci-fi book. Personalities such as Donald Trump and Barrack Obama polarize the country.  However, the book is fiction, and the main characters are fictional.

In general, if you want to write books you have to be willing to accept criticism in order to become a better writer.

What books are you reading now?

I am reading science fiction books as well as murder mystery books. I like to read James Patterson books since they are easy to follow.

How did you start your writing career?

I started writing after I retired from working as a teacher for 30 years. I was too busy as a teacher to write daily.

I have always been interested in the environment.  It was a no-brainer for me to write this book since the environment and politics are in the news almost every day.  I first became interested in the topic as a chemistry major in college and learned all about the effects of chemicals on the ozone layer.

Tell us about your next release.

I am currently working on a new book about an alien who forces a photographer to save 50 people near death and select 50 people to die within one year.  I am hoping to make it into a trilogy.  The photographer must follow specific rules or lose his life.
