YA Sci-Fi/Dystopian

Date Published: 01-01-2024

Plug your ears.  And whatever you do, don't look.  The war for humanity has begun.

Cameron “Jet” Shipley was there when they arrived in 2026. He, and everyone else, lived through the next decade and a half, learning to hide. Learning to never make a sound. Learning the most important rule of all:

You just..don’t…look.

The year is now 2042, and humanity is eking out an existence in the shadows.

Cameron and his team are sent out on a recon mission in Clarksville Tennessee, with events and developments that may alter the trajectory of Earth’s fate… and his own.

Joined by newcomers Bassett and Trudy, Cameron and his brother Rut will have to contend with a powerful force that has laid waste to the planet and annihilated over eighty-five percent of Earth’s civilization.

Will Jet’s expeditions lead him on a slippery slope of discovery that demands accountability and answers?

Or will it plunge the earth, and everything in it, into further dissonance?

“Aliens” meets “A Quiet Place” in this dystopian sci-fi thriller series.

INTERVIEW

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

Probably the fact that I need to keep details straight and not leave any gaping plot holes. Granted, the editing process is going to be extensive, but I just hate for something to be missed and then for a reader to catch it. Also, achieving verisimilitude. I totally enjoy the research to attain that for whatever I’m writing…but it does take some deep dives to get what I need, and want to make sure everything checks out.

What are your most played songs?

If you mean while I’m writing, oh man, then it’s movie soundtracks! I play those all day long and they fuel my creativity greatly. It can be Star Wars one minute, and then Pirates of the Caribbean the next, the Empire of the Sun, then Beetlejuice…then Return of the King. I love the pure unpredictability of it, and it conjures up imagery in my mind while I listen to them in the background, which helps whisk me away to fantasy or sci-fi and get me engaged.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

I sure do, and I find them indispensable! They really help me think of angles that I might not have known to explore earlier.

What book are you reading now?

The Resistance Trilogy by K.A. Riley, specifically the first one “Recruitment.” Pretty good so far! Not so Hunger-Games-copycat as some of the other dystopian ones I’ve read. This one is unique, compelling, good dialogue, tension, and intrigue.

How did you start your writing career?

Accidentally. I stumbled into writing a fictional novel in the early 90’s that I subsequently abandoned as I wasn’t sure that I wanted to pursue writing as a career at the time. But it always stayed in the back of my mind and I wanted to continue writing someday.

Tell us about your next release.

Well, Dissonance Volume I: Reality published 1.1.24, and Dissonance Volume 2: Reckoning, the second in the trilogy, should publish before the end of March! So I’m very excited and things are ramping up around here. Truly stoked for where the series is going, and grateful that it has become so much larger than I could have ever anticipated. It's grown monstrously (see what I did there? It’s an alien invasion sci-fi series) and I’m so proud of what it’s become.
