Medical Memoir

Through a humorous lens, I took a dramatic journey of survival through three life threatening cancers (pancreatic, t-cell lymphoma, and leukemia), and their treatments (chemo, radiation, and bone marrow transplant), plus sepsis and other conditions from age 56 to my present age of 80. Everlasting Rose provides you with hope and disease prevention tools and techniques to overcome the odds. With all these conditions it was determined that I had a 1 in 1,000 chance of survival. My mission is to help you with your journey.

About the Author

In the beginning I was a Catholic Italian girl, growing up in a sheltered Italian community and in the end, I had traveled extensively in the United States and Europe.  My education as a nurse with a Bachelor’s and Masters afforded me opportunities to experience many aspects of health care: teaching, administration, sales, and consulting. However, at age 56 I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and my long tortuous journey through disease after disease began. During these years I endured much pain, suffering and anxiety. However, I always stayed positive, even joyful and hopeful for the next day. I am now 80 and would like to share my unbelievable survival story with you.

Sister Molly Cleary vs. The Catholic Church

Women's Historical Fiction

A Special Message about Sister Molly Cleary

Sister Molly Cleary’s fearless journey to seek reproductive justice for women is a powerful testament to the ongoing struggle for women’s rights. In an era when Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are under threat, women risk losing significant social and personal freedoms and opportunities. States are stripping away reproductive rights and issues uniquely important to women, including childcare subsidies, living wages, equal opportunity and affirmative action protections, healthcare access, and voting rights are all facing political assault. Fighting back is not optional – it is critical

Standing on the shoulders of women of previous eras who rose up to these challenges, Molly Cleary serves as a beacon of hope and resilience. Her story is a call to action for all women to step up, fight for justice and claim their power. These difficult, life-saving battles require unwavering commitment, dogged determination and fearless struggle, and won’t be fought for us – we have to fight, and win, them ourselves.

Get your copy of “OUTRAGE” now and be inspired by Sister Molly Cleary’s unwavering courage and determination to change the world.

INTERVIEW

Introduce yourself and tell me about what you do.

I am a native Californian but have not lived there since I went away to college at age 17. Currently, I live in the Great Lakes region of the Upper Midwest, which I first discovered when I began graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I love the region for several reasons, including the change of seasons, which mimic the natural cycles of life in ways California generally does not. The downside is the extremely cold winters, which California also does not have. It took me a while to learn to drive in snow, and I’ve never adjusted to all the weight of all the clothes necessary to keep warm.

I earned a PhD from the University of Wisconsin and went on to an academic career as a research professor of social welfare and public policy, focusing on poverty issues, especially for women. Poverty is an unnecessary consequence of the profit-motive capitalist economic system underpinning the US economy and the levels of poverty in the most affluent nation on earth are shameful, and fixable, if there is the political will to do it, but so far, there has not been. During this time, I became widely published in the social sciences.

I left academia after 26 years because I was very discouraged about the direction higher education was moving toward, and that the problem I’d dedicated my career to solving was proving unsolvable in the richest nation on earth. Because I believe life’s most important purpose is to work to make the world better, ultimately, I had a hard time accepting the deeply disturbing reality that America needs a poverty class in order to maintain its capitalist philosophy, and is unwilling to craft the social policies necessary to allow the poor an even minimally decent standard of living.

After a year off, I took a part time, hobby job working for a small, semi-rural newspaper syndicate, writing feature stories, editorials and a column advocating for women’s issues. I had been a journalism major as an undergraduate, and had an internship lined up on the Kansas City Star when I got mono and lost the opportunity. I changed majors to enable me to graduate on time, and the part-time newspaper job allowed me to return to something I was originally interested in – and I loved it! Academia is a very insular life and being a journalist allowed me to discover that there are a lot of crazy-interesting, and just plain crazy people in the world!!

As jobs go, the newspaper job was the most fun I’d ever had and I did it for 8 years, until an academic publisher approached me about writing a book about women and poverty in 21st century America, and the opportunity was too good to pass up. I ended up writing 4 non-fiction books for that publisher. I also returned to academia to become part of a research team at the University of Wisconsin. At some point during this time, I decided I wanted to try my hand at fiction.

Having grown up Catholic, which was never a good fit, in adulthood I confirmed that I am a heritage Jew, which I am extremely proud of and long suspected. I have really enjoyed discovering the nuances of this heritage, including the history, culture, traditions, religious beliefs, and rituals. This said, I have been unable to uncover very much about my Jewish ancestry because all of the family records end in the Holocaust data bases. However, the pseudonym Avery Michael that I chose to differentiate my fiction from non-fiction writing honors my Jewish great grandmother, Bertha Michael who emigrated to the US from Germany, passing through Ellis Island late in the 19th century, before the rise of the Nazis.

I’m married to a retired Milwaukee trial attorney who is also an award-winning short story writer. We live with our brilliant and loving dog in a semi-rural area surrounded by beautiful, inspiring scenery.

Tell me more about your journey as an author, including the writing processes.

My first writing success was winning a poetry contest in 6th grade. It was the last poem I ever wrote! This said, I think my ability as a writer began to evolve in Catholic school, when we had to learn Latin, the official language of the Catholic Church. This taught me the structure of language and word origins. I also grew up speaking colloquial, every-day Spanish, which was good practice in paying attention to phrasing and nuance. I discovered I’m somewhat adept at language generally and am fairly quick to pick up a foreign one if I am immersed in it and have no other choice.

I personally believe it is impossible to survive graduate school without the ability to at least write a clear and proper English sentence, and was fortunate to be able to do this out of the gate. A requirement of earning a PhD degree is writing a publishable doctoral dissertation, which is a very valuable writing experience. A successful career in the upper levels of academia requires the ability to coherently write and publish scientific papers and research reports, w/out the benefit of a line editor.

While the ability to write good science is extremely valuable, it is also very, very different from non-fiction writing, and bears almost no relationship whatever to fiction writing…and the journey from writing social science research reports to where I am now has taken time, and a lot of practice! The newspaper job helped me grasp writing for the general public, but my default is still a scientific writing style, and I have to constantly guard against this.

At one point in this process, I decided taking some writing courses might help me, so while I was writing the women in poverty book, I signed up for one. The result was I was told I couldn’t write and should look for something else to do with my life. Fortunately, I ignored this opinion and that book, plus one other, both won the Council for Wisconsin Writers Non-fiction Book of the Year awards in 2012 and 2016, respectively. Women and Poverty became a standard sociology reader for both upper level undergraduate and graduate sociology programs and libraries nation-wide and in Europe.

I moved into fiction to reach a wider audience and because I believe fiction can be a powerful vehicle for conveying important social messages. My first serious try, which is out of print and is the earlier version of Outrage, won several nice awards and received great reviews. Since my first experience, I’ve generally avoided writing courses and if asked, would say that, especially pertaining to my fiction writing, I’m self-taught.

At the beginning, I often thrash out ideas with my husband and once I have a draft, I corral him to read it. He’s generous with his time in this regard, and a very harsh critic, which is the only feedback I appreciate and find helpful in making the work better. He’s been willing to read a manuscript several times and really stepped up when I was essayist and lead editor for We Rise to Resist: Voices from a New Era in Women’s Political Action. He gave up a whole summer of golf to help get that book, which was pushback against the Trump presidency, finished up as quickly as possible. On occasion I lean on former colleagues to read a draft for me also.

I view writing as thinking out loud and talking to myself, which I really enjoy doing. As a result, I write every day, usually in the afternoons, in a large window office overlooking a serene landscape that encourages contemplative thinking. If I go too long without having a writing project to work on, I find myself pretty far out of sorts. It’s fair to say that while it is hard work, writing is something I am compelled to do and basically can’t help myself.

If I get stuck or shut down, which doesn’t often happen, my solution generally is to work in my Zen garden, knit, read spy novels and legal thrillers, or watch stupid sitcoms on television. The treadmill is also enormously helpful in jarring ideas loose.

I am a classic introvert and need a lot of dead time in my life, which is reserved for whenever my imagination invites me along on its journey down whatever road it has decided to take. Once I have encountered my characters and they have revealed themselves to me in greater depth, I become the instrument through which they speak their truths. At this point I am no longer in control of the story; it belongs to the characters and my job is to get out of their way and let them tell it however they want it told. Often, it’s a wild ride!

Tell me about your Book

The original idea for OUTRAGE arose from my experiences as a poverty researcher, when I met many nuns fighting in the trenches of poverty and to a person found them to be tough, no-nonsense individuals who took the Church on their terms and marched to their own drummer. They became the inspiration for Sister Molly Cleary.

Having grown up the eldest of seven motherless children in a southside Chicago Irish-Catholic family, Molly Cleary had only two life choices: marriage and inevitably bearing more children than she wants or can possibly care for or entering the convent. She decides on religious life, but never forgets her roots, or that her mother died in childbirth – the consequence of too many pregnancies and life as a hostage in a religious culture that views women as servant wives and baby machines.

As the Church’s Vatican II reforms and the wider women’s liberation movement take hold, Molly realizes that without control over their reproductive lives, women have no control over their lives at all and that by forbidding divorce, declaring birth control a mortal sin, and labeling abortion as murder the patriarchal Catholic Church she has dedicated her life to serving severely endangers women’s lives. Outraged and recognizing she cannot remain silent in the face of what she views as institutionalized abuse and imprisonment of women designed to bend them to the will of men, Molly decides that no matter the personal cost, in either emotional or practical terms, she is compelled to take up the fight for women’s reproductive rights within the wealthiest, most powerful institution in the world, ruled by a cabal of middle-aged men with no accountability to the women whose lives they demand to control.

Some label her a heretic and others call her a saint, but everyone agrees Sister Molly Cleary is fearless in her determination to transform the patriarchal Catholic Church into a more just and equitable religious institution that recognizes women’s right to make their own reproductive decisions.

Inspired by a true story, OUTRAGE chronicles one passionately committed nun’s fight for women’s reproductive autonomy within the wealthiest, most powerful patriarchy in the world – the Catholic Church.

Any message for our readers

I am very committed to writing fiction with a social message that I hope inspires readers to think about the story theme, the characters, the setting, and reflect on how they can take action on an issue that matters to them. This link is an interview I did talking about this fiction as a social message: https://christinaconsolino.com/2023/10/02/standing-up-and-speaking-out-an-interview-with-paula-dail/

Jodi Picoult is an author I admire who does this very well.

I hope Sister Molly Cleary’s story will inspire readers to take up take up the cause for women’s rights and fight for them, because in this era of DEI initiatives going down, women are going to suffer significant social and personal opportunity losses. In addition to reproductive rights, which are disappearing state by state, women are facing issues with childcare subsidies, equal wages, EOAA, affordable housing and healthcare access, living wages…the list is endless. Women have to step up and fight these battles for themselves, b/c no one is going to do it for them. Molly is a role model for one way to go about doing this.

I hope women readers will grasp the important message that they have to claim their power, because power is never handed over voluntarily. Gaining power always involves a fight.

I also hope readers will understand that while organized religion does a lot of good in the world, it is also, by its very nature, a patriarchal institution and patriarchies never serve women’s best interests. Women have to commit to confronting this problem and then changing it.

Try not to wonder what secret darkness your neighbors or classmates hold in their hearts for you.

It’s about the hidden dark thoughts that all of us think every day. Most of us would never act on them, we’re not sociopaths, but what if there was a circumstance where through supernatural intervention, you couldn’t help but act on those hidden desires? That’s what IN DARKNESS is about, the lethality in those hidden, benign shadows that some of our thoughts live inside.

Dark thoughts, like cream, will always rise to the top at the wrong moment.

About the Authors

Dennis and Victoria Arnette, siblings who reside in a mountainous region of the United States, have cherished outdoor activities and playing in nature since their youth. Their childhood, marked by a joyful environment and a close circle of friends, was filled with imaginative games where they envisioned themselves as kings, queens, knights, and robbers. They climbed trees, walls, and mountains, embracing every climbable challenge they encountered. Their adventures were further enriched by various trips with their parents. These experiences during their formative years naturally shaped them into fun-loving, hardworking, and creative individuals with vibrant imaginations.

Dennis and Victoria, while not professional writers, have always harbored the ambition to collaborate on a writing project. From an early age they were inspired by the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. Their favorite childhood moments were spent in the evenings, listening to their parents read classic stories like "The Bremen Town Musicians," "Snow White," "Little Red Riding Hood," and "Cinderella" before bedtime. This early exposure fueled their longstanding aspiration to craft a fairy tale or a fictional story aimed at an adult audience.

During the stressful period of the pandemic, they embarked on a lighthearted project to distract themselves and bring laughter to their family. They soon realized that this project had far greater potential than initially expected. They dedicated themselves to creating this beautiful book, and sincerely hope you enjoy reading it as much as they enjoyed writing it.

Excerpt

An Aquatic Reckoning

Back at the dock, the fisherman hurried to the stables, paying the stable hand four Electrotokens to rent a cart and a pair of mules to haul his catch away. He promised to return the cart and the animals the next day.

Garwick Greedgill was thick around the midsection and had a sunken chest and narrow frame that belied the strength of his wiry arms. His leathery, tanned skin bore witness to many years spent on a boat's deck under the sun's harsh glare. His hair was a bristly mix of silver and gunmetal gray, poking through the many holes in a threadbare red cap embossed with the emblem of a long-forgotten fishing guild. A heavy forehead and scowling brow framed eyes a sickly shade of murky green, reminiscent of a polluted ocean. His broad nose bent slightly to one side courtesy of a mishap with the sail boom. Countless hours spent retrieving catch after catch left his calloused hands stained with fish scales and innards as he searched for the grand haul that always eluded him.

Garwick wore frayed puce trousers held up by a filthy, tattered flaxen rope belt. His once-bright cerise tunic, covered in various colored patches where he had mended it over the years, was threadbare. It hung loosely over his prominent belly. The soles of his scuffed brown boots were worn thin, leaving his feet vulnerable to the cold and damp. He wore a necklace of oddly shaped stones and bones that he believed would attract good luck. The longed-for luck seldom materialized.

Garwick drove the cart as close as possible to the bog extending beyond his property's edge. He lived in a ramshackle hut between the bog and a twisting, moss-covered path that led to a meandering creek. Near the hut was a dingy shed. Every corner held remnants of his profession—a collection of rusty hooks, tattered nets, and an old, cracked barrel filled with miscellaneous items of dubious worth. A box containing lucky tokens collected over the years sat on a dusty shelf. Best of all, there was a wondrous grimoire. An odor of decay emanated from the book's brown hide cover. Garwick did not mind the strange texture or unpleasant scent of the tome. Based on today's catch, the grimoire's magic had already begun to work.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?
Usually just starting! Sometimes I may feel inspired by the opening scene, but then it’s a matter of showing up and writing a little each day.

What are your most played songs?
I don’t listen to music during the writing process, but I do enjoy Enya when I’m drawing. It gets me into a creative spirit.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?
Yes, I’d been a part of two writer groups for several years until recently. Now, I’m still in touch with several of the other writers, and we still read and critique each other’s stuff.

What book are you reading now?
Andrew Klavan’s A Woman Underground and J.D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy

How did you start your writing career?
I’ve been writing since I was eleven. It started with short stories about my best friends and me and also poetry. Then I wrote fanfiction in various fandoms for two decades. In 2015, I finally decided to dedicate fifteen minutes a day to writing a book I’d been wanting to write since 2006 about my late grandma. I was determined to finish it, even if no one read it and I never wrote anything else. Almost a year later, I finished it, and since then, the ideas have kept flowing. I’ve published nine novels and two collections of short stories and have three more books in the works.

Tell us about your next release.
It’s a nonfiction book called A Boy and His Mom: The Blessings of Autism and is about my experiences raising a child with autism from a faith-based perspective. I hope it brings encouragement to special needs parents and awareness to others who don’t know what it’s like. This is a departure from my typical writing, as all my other works have been fiction.

In her spare time – what spare time? – she devours books, shamelessly watches Hallmark movies and When Calls the Heart, pets her orange and black kitties, looks at the stars, drinks wine or coffee with good friends, and dreams of what other stories she wishes to tell.

The Secret Code Hidden In the English Language

Non-Fiction, Historical Biography

Date Published: October 2024

The Code is a fascinating exploration of history, linguistics, numerology and philosophy that endeavors to explain the discovery of a secret code that is hidden in the English language. After conducting extensive research and hiring a statistician to independently test all of his work, the Codebreaker came to the conclusion that the Code is not accidental, but intentional and irrefutable. The existence of the Code is nothing short of life-changing and the implications are monumental.

The Code tells the story of the discovery of the Code and presents overwhelming evidence showing that there is a force at work – a force that many call God. The ongoing narrative of the discovery is supplemented with tables that demonstrate how particular historical events are related to central historical figures. The book also contains brief histories of the events and brief biographies of the people to give the reader some historical background. Pictures highlight each section, bringing the discovery of the Code to life. There are also statistics for significance, for the probability of the results occurring randomly, and for tests of four claims regarding the incredible propositions that the Codebreaker makes.

Interview

Tell me more about your journey as an author, including the writing processes?

I have always engaged in some form of writing, whether it be writing poetry, songs, music videos or writing about various theories that I have developed. I typically write my ideas in notebooks and then fine-tune the ideas until they become tangible works of art. Since I am a perfectionist, I tend to edit my work many times before I am satisfied with the end result.

Tell me about your Book

The Code is the extraordinary discovery of a secret code hidden in the English language that REVEALS THE FUTURE! Not only will you learn what the Code is and how it works but you will see that it is intentional and deliberate and can only be the work of a force – a force that many call GOD.

Reader-friendly and engaging, The Code will appeal to anyone curious about history, linguistics, numerology, philosophy and religion. My goal is to draw in as many readers as possible so that people can truly experience the life-changing power of the Code.

(Hounds of Hell MC)

Motorcycle Club Romance, Suspense

Date Published: November 1, 2024

Margot -- I've loved Ryder since we were kids, but he's never been the type to stick with anyone for long. Being a deputy sheriff means I see the world differently--by the law. He’s the opposite. The Mafia took my father from me. When they return to threaten everything I care about, including Ryder, I realize the line between right and wrong isn’t so clear. If we’re going to survive this, I’ll need Ryder’s strength. Maybe this time, we’ll face danger together.

Ryder -- Margot’s been right in front of me for years, but I’m the guy who never sticks around. Commitment? Not for me. Now she’s all I see. When the Mafia comes after the Hounds, everything is at stake. Margot’s not just a deputy sheriff -- she’s the woman I’ve always needed. The woman I love. I’ll die before I let anything happen to her.

EXCERPT

Ryder

The next day Ryder smiled to read the text from Margot Donner.

Margot: If you still think Razor is okay with it, I’ll come see you later today.

They’d become close after her mother’s death. She was the only woman he’d ever kept as a friend for years and never fucked. Yeah, she was a cop, but she was one of his favorite people.

“What are you grinning about?” Beast asked, shifting pillows behind Ryder’s back.

Ryder wasn’t admitting to shit. He had a reputation to maintain. “Just waiting to hear Axel got these fuckers,” Ryder told him, groaning as the bigger biker hauled him up into a sitting position on the bed.

“That’s it, huh?” Beast went over to the desk in Ryder’s room at the clubhouse, lifted off a tray that held his lunch.

Beast’s dark-eyed gaze was filled with humor. His muscular friend, with his wild fringe of dark hair, towered over Ryder in the bed. Once he situated the tray in front of Ryder, his beefy arms folded across the wide expanse of his chest. The face of the dark wolf inked on his friend’s forearm drew his attention with its sinister gaze.

“Maybe,” Ryder said, steadying the tray on his lap, shaking his head. His MC brothers were still feeding him soup and applesauce. “Can I get something solid?”

Beast shook his head. “Nah, you need to heal up.”

Ryder snorted. “I’m full of fucking holes. I’m surprised this shit isn’t running right out of me the minute I eat it.”

The chime of Beast’s phone had him fishing his device out of his pocket. “Yep?”

The deep voice on the other end of the phone sounded like Hero.

Ryder tried hard to listen -- he knew his twin brother was handling things, especially with his girl in danger. Still irked him greatly that he couldn’t be there to fight at Axel’s side. To have his back. That had always been the deal between them. To always have each other’s back.

As Beast listened to whatever Hero said, Ryder let his head fall back against the pillows with a deep sigh. Alex, now Axel, had been born first by seven minutes. A fact his twin had never thrown in his face, never used at all. And Axel certainly earned the part of the older brother even though they were identical. Axel could be counted on when Ryder needed him. If he was hung over from a night of partying, Axel let him stay home and took up the slack at work. When he got himself into the occasional fight, Axel tipped the scales if he’d underestimated the other guy. Or came to bail him out.

Ryder also had spent years watching his brother earn everyone’s respect. His brother and Hero made all the business decisions for the garage. When it came to dirty jobs the club needed doing, Axel was among the first approached. Cool-headed and calculating, Axel didn’t miss a damn thing.

Ryder didn’t command the same respect. He wasn’t disrespected. And he got important jobs from the club. Okay, maybe Ryder wasn’t as cool and calculated as his twin. But he was a good shot, a damn good fighter with any weapon or hand-to-hand combat. And when crazy was called for? He could do crazy all day long.

Yes, Ryder was a ladies’ man. Axel took comfort from the occasional sweet butt although not to the extent Ryder did. He liked the ladies and didn’t limit himself to the ones who came to every party fishing for a Hound to claim her as his old lady. He liked his women fast and flashy, like his bikes. Ryder appreciated a nice ride.

Unlike his bikes, he never stayed with any woman more than a few weeks. “Love” was amazing the first few weeks. But as attachment tried to take hold, Ryder felt himself being strangled by those thin vines of commitment.

“It’s done,” Beast told him, ending the call. “Sounds like a fucking free-for-all. Sheriff Sawyer got to the Mafia guys first, then once our guys got there, Axel beat the shit out of his girl’s ex. Probably the same fucker who shot you and killed Elsie and Clyde over at Cowboy Pete’s.”

Ryder smiled. He knew Axel would deal with it.

“The guy dead?” Ryder asked, bracing for regret. It would have been nice to put down the guy who shot him full of holes -- or gave the order -- himself.

“Nah,” Beast told him. “Sawyer took him in.”

That could spell trouble down the road.

“At least Axel’s old lady is a little safer,” the other biker told him as he wandered out of his room. “Until they let him out.”

Axel’s old lady.

Everyone called her Angel but if he remembered rightly, her name was Sadie. Was she his twin’s old lady?

Yeah, the way it started out, Ryder’d assumed she was some sort of pity thing his brother had taken on. But weeks went by after she decided to hide in Mercy, and his brother stayed close to her all that time. By the time her ex and his men found her, yeah, he had to admit they’d felt like a couple. The young woman looked at his brother like a knight in shining armor. That wasn’t anything new. Ryder had seen that before. His brother had a soft spot for women and kids.

It wasn’t until the party Saturday night when Axel brought her to the clubhouse that it hit Ryder. The way his twin looked at her. Damn. He should have noticed before. His brother had found love, and he knew next to nothing about the woman except she’d been horribly abused by her ex and looked at his brother like he hung the fucking moon.

Shouldn’t he know something about his brother’s girl? If she was in Axel’s life, she’d be in his too. Hell, they’d brought her to the clubhouse a couple of days ago to keep her safe. Ryan heard her hustling around beyond his door. She never popped in to check on him though.

Lying still with the pain bleeding vividly into his awareness, Ryder reached for his pain meds, taking a double dose now that he knew his brother was safe. His brother had saved his girl and beat the fucking bad guy. Axel had to be feeling pretty good about things about now.

Ryder tried to shift on the bed to make himself comfortable, willing the pills to take the pain away sooner rather than later.

He and Axel couldn’t have been further apart in life right now. His brother was the conquering hero, setting things right for his girl and his dumbass twin brother. Ryder went home with a girl, and she got shot in the face, killed. Ryder got shot with her, providing the enemy with a weak board in the fence. They had to take him out of the hospital to keep him safe from the Mafia until Axel resolved it. Didn’t that make him a useless pile of shit?

Before his eyes slid shut, his gaze fell on his phone. He realized he’d never answered Margot, and he wanted to before he crashed. Lifting the phone in his shaking hand, he read back over the conversation.

Margot: If you still think Razor is okay with it, I’ll come see you later today.
