Thriller

Date Published: January 26, 2024

"Gritting, unexpected, and hard to put down." - Midwest Book Review

Rook’s on the run in the most dangerous storm in decades. When a brush with the law goes from bad to worse, can she escape druggies, crazies, and killers?

Abandoned by her now-ex-boyfriend at a dive bar in the middle of nowhere, the last thing resilient Rook Kellum needs is the local sheriff confiscating her I.D. when one phone call could expose her true identity and the reason she is on the run from the law. So when she’s trapped by a deadly ice storm that destroys the Mississippi Delta, the twenty-year-old fugitive has a plan: get everyone drunk, steal back her license (and a madman’s car), and get the hell out of town.

It is only when Rook escapes to a secluded cabin does she discover she isn’t the only one in need of rescue. As she fights her way out of one disaster just to get pounded with another, will Rook live to see the light of day?

One Icy Night is Taylor Adam's No Exit meets Rachel Hawkins’s The Wife Upstairs.

INTERVIEW

About you

My name is Alessio Conforzi. In 2022 I graduated with a diploma in Sustainable Development from Stellenbosch University in South Africa,

as I was very interested in business and environmental conservation. I am an aspiring content creator for the Dreamland Universe Brand.

Journey as an author

My journey as an author started many years ago when I got interested in creative writing in the form of fictional stories, living in Africa with the surrounding wilderness

helped increase my imaginative capabilities. As I am not a professional writer, I worked with a writing team to put my story and ideas into a storybook for children to enjoy

reading.

Writing Process

My writing process was first focusing on the main concept and it's identity which is wonder, mystery and creativity.

The main purpose of this is to consistently come up with content with these themes foremost in my mind.

Entirety of the concept, Identity of the story (main themes I am going to stick with eg: genre, key characteristics of the story, what will make it unique? how will the unique identity impact the audience?)

The main components of the concept include:

1) World Building - when it comes to world building, I try once again to make the themes above the most important part of the world building, in order to make the audience

feel like they are travelling to truly fantastical locations that feel real, due to detail.

2) Magic System - come up with a magic system that not only reaches the imagination of the child but provides unique abilities that enhance the themes of the story and provide a simulation of superhero like characteristics, this also ties in with individuality and unique capabilities.

Refining the World Building and Magic System individually:

For World Building, I made sure to create clear cut laws and rules for each of the locations as well as maintaining a specific identity for each one in order to make these locations feel interesting and real. I made, detail the most important thing when world building and this was done by absorbing content that was related to the theme of the location.

For the Magic System, it was very important to create clear limitations and a power level system amongst the characters and their abilities that the audience can easily understand, therefore it is a hard magic system as opposed to soft magic system.

I created multiple layers to the magic system in order to add an element of intrigue and once again make it feel more realistic due to detail.

I always try to link the magic system to the world building in order to maintain the overall identity of the concept as well as add more elements of wonder and mystery.

When I was creating the characters, I tried to limit the spotlight on them in order to have more attention on the other elements of the story. I also tried to have scenes and storyline that would allow the audience to put themselves in the place of the main characters, this is why I avoided overly detailed main characters.

This is an introduction book and there are more books to come (that take place in dreamscapes), so as not to have any discrepancies with the future books, I tried to limit the character depth in order for the characters to grow slowly and develop over time. I tried to create more depth in the secondary characters as they add to the theme and identity of the concept.

Tell us more about the book

The book follows Lex and Lucy, 9 year old twins, who visit their grandmother at her cabin. They fall asleep and when they awake they find themselves in a mysterious place called Dreamland. They are pulled into a quest to save this magical realm, while on this quest they meet a host of unique and interesting characters and explore a land filled with amazing and magical locations. They discover that being dream warriors comes with incredible abilities as they realise they can channel dream energy!

This channeling is done by placing energy orbs onto their magic bracelets that they receive upon becoming dream warriors.

Lucy and Lex find out that their abilities differ from each other. Lex is a shifter which means he has transformative abilities and Lucy is a sorcerer which means she has spell casting abilities, both are very important in saving Dreamland!

Message/messages for our readers (just giving you few options, short and longer messages :))

It's a book that encourages children to use their imaginations and to believe in themselves!

It's a book that encourages children to have an imaginative mind, to value their own individuality and have confidence in their capabilities!

And to also accept people with their differences.

It shows children the importance of having an imaginative and open mind which encourages innovativeness, problem solving skills

and outside of the box thinking. It encourages individuality and the acceptance of people.

It encourages children to have confidence in their own capabilities and dream big.

It shows the power of the mind and how what we think and the way we think shapes the world around us.

It allows childrens to escape into a fantastical world when they feel stressed and to love reading!

Excerpt

While drying off, I catch my reflection again. At least my face is no longer smeared with makeup. I brush my auburn hair the best I can, which takes time since it’s well down my back. Michael bugged me about the time I wasted on my hair, but I prefer it long. After returning to the bedroom, I put on cut-offs and my favorite shirt. It was my father’s and all I have left of his. It’s old and several buttons are missing so it might reveal more than it should. Not that anyone is here to see. I could parade around nude.

Might have to, since my budget didn’t allow much for clothes. While packing, I’d thought this would change since Michael would have an income here. Now, though, what I have must last even longer.

My suitcase is open where I left it, with the boxes from Boston off to the side. They contain everything I own. Might as well sort out my meager belongings. It’s all on me, and will be from now on. What else do I have to fill my time? The tears start again.

Since there isn’t much, it doesn’t take long to unpack. It’s a good thing I have so few clothes since there isn’t much in the way of drawer space in the four-drawer scarred wooden dresser. In the kitchen, I find the basics, but knowing how to cook would help. Three frozen dinners are in the freezer, so I won’t starve right away. When I discover there’s coffee, I get my old coffee maker going and soon have a cup poured. I amble through to the living room, desperate not to let the drabness affect me.

With few choices, I flop on the musty couch and contemplate what is next. Michael’s letter on the floor in front of me doesn’t help. The tears are stinging my eyes again when I hear a knock. Before I can get up, there’s another. After setting my cup on the bare coffee table, I hurry to the front door and open it. A man stands outside the porch door. He waves, smiling. The icy air making itself known makes me conscious of my missing buttons. I grab my coat and open the porch door, finding to my amazement a cowboy, complete with hat, boots, and a heavy coat I think they call a duster. I didn’t know cowboys still exist.

I motion him into the enclosed porch and he steps in, removing his hat and releasing his mid-length light brown hair with its lighter blond highlights.

He’s standing much taller than my five-six, and even though he’s wearing a heavy coat, appears more than fit. “Afternoon. I’m Jason Withers. My grandmother sent brownies to welcome you to the neighborhood.” “Neighborhood? I have neighbors?”

He chuckles. “She’s the closest and lives over the hill. She wanted to welcome you, but she’s not real mobile and asked me to bring these by,” he says, holding out a covered plate.

“Oh! Well, thank you. I’m Jazmine. Jazmine Strake,” I tell him, taking the plate. “You say your grandmother lives nearby? Do you live with her?”

He smiles. “No! She’d think I was trying to take care of her.”

“Well, it was nice of you to bring this by. I’ll return the plate as soon as I can.” That is a farewell. I’m hoping he’ll leave.

“No hurry, take your time. I understand you’re here alone?”

I’m not sure if he’s trying to make conversation or what, but he seems nice. “Yes, the original plans didn’t work out.”

“I heard they offered your friend a better position.”

How small is this community? Does everyone know? “Would you like some coffee and brownies?” Why did I ask that?

“No, I shouldn’t come in, but thank you, I enjoyed meeting you. Let me give you this. It’s my number, in case you need anything.”

As I glance at the card, I’m startled by his title. “Doctor? You’re a doctor?” I pause, appalled at my tone. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it like it sounded.”

“No problem. I’m not the type of doctor you’re thinking. I’m a DVM, Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine. A large animal vet. You can still call me though, if you need something.”

“Well, thank you. I might take you up on it.”

“You should. Again, welcome.”

He turns to leave and I half expect a horse to be close by, but no. Instead, there’s a monstrosity of a truck out front.

I’ve never seen a pickup that big. Not that I’ve seen that many. His name on the door with the words “Veterinarian Services” along with his phone number makes me snicker. I guess everyone has his number. He backs out and gives a wave before making the turn onto the road.

About the Author

Born in Muncie, IN, Craig is as typical middle-America as they come. He was young when his parents divorced and his grandmother came to live with him, his mother, and two sisters. Seeing his grandmother’s faith in God on a regular basis led him to accept and know everything is okay, God’s in charge.

Craig served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and followed this as a DoD contractor where he had multiple tours overseas and around the U.S. While there were events in his life that tested his faith in God, nothing compared to when his first son was born with major medical issues. As a twenty-one-year-old father with a young devastated wife, his faith had never been tested more. After enduring several surgeries, some considered experimental, his son passed away at six months and two weeks. But even in his brief life, he had a tremendous impact on Craig and others.

Since then, God has blessed Craig with two more sons and has been a constant guidance in his life. Craig’s time in the military and as a contractor afterward included over 20 years overseas, where he was part of local mission churches. On their last return to the states, God led him and his wife to Oklahoma, where he teaches Bible studies and serves in a local church.

The memory of what God did to help him through his parent’s divorce, his son’s illness and death, and many other events in his life, has led him to want to share what impact God had and has with him.

Nowhere are we promised a life without tragedies, setbacks, problems, or devastating events we have no control over, but God’s word does promise, ‘It’s okay, God’s in charge.’

Excerpt

It takes me almost three months to get up the nerve to tell the fam I’m preggers. I spent all that time doing my best not to think about it, hoping that it would just go away. Finally, the growing bump in my belly forced me to say something.

“Holy shit!” says Danny. “Nattie, that’s outstanding!”

Obviously, there’s something else I didn’t tell them.

“It’s wonderful,” echoes Lupe. “Now Eduardo and Shannie will have another brother or a sister.”

I should have expected this reaction. They think it’s Danny’s baby!

“We should tell the kids right now,” Lupe goes on.

“And have a celebration,” says Danny. “Why don’t we call Mom, Amos and M.B., round up the kids, then all go out to dinner tonight? We can tell everybody at once.”

“We can go to that new seafood restaurant that just opened,” adds Lupe. “You know, Nattie, the one you said you really wanted to try.”

Come to think of it, it could be Danny’s. I’ve never been religious about taking my pill every day. It didn’t seem to matter much when he was the only guy I was with. Danny looks at me and suddenly looks alarmed. “Nattie, you’re crying!”

Of course, I’m crying, you idiot. How can I tell you this baby might be my biological father’s?

“Of course, she’s crying,” says Lupe. “Hormones! It’s what new mothers do.”
