UNSTRUNG (Book 1)

Lexa Pate, 17-year-old thief extraordinaire, has burned a bridge or two in her life. You don't make a career out of stealing other people's property without making enemies.

When a risky job goes from bad to worse, Lexa and her adopted family find themselves on Precipice Corporation's hit list because they've accidentally stolen the wrong thing - plans for a new model of genetically-engineered super humans. Now every bounty hunter, cop on the take, and snitch in the city is after them.

Lexa's world crumbles around her as she fights to keep her family safe even as someone strolls out of her forgotten past. Quinn claims to know who Lexa really is, but can she trust a stranger she met while robbing his boss?

More importantly, does she really want to know what Quinn has to tell her?

UNFINISHED (Prequel Novella)

In a world where genetically-engineered humans serve as slave labor to “real” humans, ten-year-old Quinn is an anomaly. Designed with superior intelligence and physical attributes, he lives and trains at Maren DeGaul’s lakeside mansion, being readied for some mysterious purpose as dictated by Precipice Corporation. Despite the comfortable surroundings, Quinn is frequently pushed to his limits by his human guardians, often learning lessons in pain and loneliness.

That all changes the day they introduce him to a new artificial, one who is both his equal and his soulmate. But when Maren decides the new artificial is flawed and should be decommissioned, it’s up to Quinn to find a way to save his only friend.

UPRISING (Book 2)

Master thief Lexa Pate always prided herself on never being caught. That changed the night she freed the artificial humans of Triarch City, a people she’s still learning to identify with. Now, imprisoned by the government, she’s separated from her family—and the love of her life—while facing murder charges. What she doesn’t know is something far worse awaits her: the Quad intends to make her pay for her crimes.

After helplessly watching Lexa be captured, Quinn has to place his trust in a group of people he barely knows to save the girl he loves. The rebels outside Triarch City have the equipment—and the information—he needs to rescue Lexa. But, knowing the Quad has sophisticated brainwashing techniques, his biggest worry is who she’ll be even if they do manage to bring her home.

Pawns in a game they barely understand, Lexa and Quinn will have to use all the gifts they possess to fight the powers seeking to control them and find a way back to each other.

Before it’s too late.

UNIFIFED (Book 3)

Lexa Pate has been called many things: thief, artificial, lover, friend. Now, as she faces the biggest crisis of her life, she realizes there’s another title trying to define her: murderer.

After she was freed from the Quad’s clutches, Lexa thought her life would go back to, if not normal, something resembling that. Sure, the band of rebels she’s joined have ideas of freeing the world from the Quad (delusions of grandeur might be more accurate), but Lexa is reunited with the men who’ve become her ragtag family. In her new home, she’s safe, she’s surrounded by people who care for her, and Quinn is always close at hand, ready to show her how much he loves her. So why does she feel like killing him every time they’re together?

Quinn thought rescuing Lexa from the Glass House would be all he needed to find his happy ending. But Lexa’s incarceration has changed things between them, and he fears the Quad altered more about Lexa than anyone suspects. With tensions in the rebel camp rising between the humans and the artificials, Quinn knows the war will reach a boiling point soon, and he may be the only one who can stop it. But if the rebels continue to believe Lexa is dangerous, he could lose more than the war—he could lose the girl he loves.

Excerpt From Book 1

I stare blankly at the wall in my room. My Exeprin high has worn off and I changed back into my pajamas at the first chance, unable to get the chip off my mind. Our little team has ceased being annoying but forgettable and has become a critical target. Everyone from cops to bounty hunters to the Quad’s security team will be after us. All because we stole the wrong thing. Sure, we hadn’t planned to steal that particular chip, but our mistake doesn’t change one simple fact.

We are so dead.

“…run another diagnostic,” Turpin calls from the hallway. He’s been holed up in the lab with Jole, examining the data on the chip. A moment later, he knocks. Unlike Jole, he waits for me to say “come in” before opening the door.

“Hey,” he says, taking a seat on my desk chair. “You okay?”

I drop my pillow over my face. Maybe I should suffocate myself with it. “If I hadn’t tripped and set off the alarm, there’d be no trace of how the chip was taken. Now…they’ll find us.”

“Lexa, there’s no way to plan for the unknown. Besides, anyone else probably would’ve set that security device off sooner and not gotten away.”

A headache starts throbbing behind my eyes. Stars, this is the worst time to be coming off Exeprin. “I’ll remind you how you said it wasn’t my fault when we’re rounded up by Maren’s people.”

“You won’t have to,” Turpin says. “I’m the one who took the job. We go down, you can blame me.”

He sounds so dejected, I sit up, hugging the pillow to my chest. Maybe I should be scared, but a morbid curiosity about Maren’s artificials gets the better of me. “What are the new versions like? Can you tell from the plans?”

“Most of it is over our heads—the genetic engineering data is very complex—and part of the chip is heavily encoded. But I understand enough to know these are the most human-like versions I’ve seen. Circulatory systems that actually regenerate synthetic blood cells, skin cells that scab over when cut, fully functional digestive tracts. Stars, even their hair, fingernails and bodies will grow like a human’s.”

My headache intensifies. “Wait, what do you mean their bodies will grow?”

Turpin goes to my window. “Instead of making adults, like usual, these prototypes appear to be equivalent to six-year-old children. All of them with critical thinking processors akin to a person with a one-forty I.Q. The plans cover maturity cycles and learning rates by age. The only thing I can guess is that her scientists want to mimic the learning capability of a child’s brain.”

My room suddenly feels cold. “We stole the plans for a super-race of fake human beings?”

“It would seem that way. And all of them programmed to think the way the Quad wants them to think. Hyper-intelligent, but without the experience or knowledge to have true free will. I’m wondering about that, though,” he says, coming to sit on the edge of my bed. “If Maren’s playing God to this extent, how will she maintain control of her ‘kids?’ Can you imagine them as teenagers?” He gives me a rueful smile. “You’re hard enough to handle.”

I punch his arm, more out of respect than annoyance. Everything is so topsy-turvy, I wonder if I’m going soft. Soon I’ll be letting Jole off the hook for coming into my room without knocking. “Maybe it’s good we stole those plans. The new K600s are advanced enough that I can hardly tell they’re artificials. These new…things would be an abomination. A crime against nature.” I stand and pace, needing to put my nervous energy into the ground. If I don’t, I’ll blow, and I can’t afford a meltdown. “Bolts shouldn’t be so human. It blurs way too many lines, don’t you think?”

“The bigger question is what we tell our clients,” Turpin says. “Because we can’t give the chip to them. It’s too dangerous.”

He has a point. “I say we tell them the chip self-destructed as we decoded it. Who cares if they get angry. I’m less scared of them than I am of Maren.”

Having escaped an abusive relationship, Chloe MacGregor is determined to put the past behind her. The little cottage high up on the cliffs overlooking the beautiful North Yorkshire town of Whitby is her safe haven, somewhere she is free to be herself.

When the arrival of her new neighbour and boss, Luke Warwick, threatens her peaceful, sheltered life, Chloe is forced to confront her past and to re-evaluate who she really is. Falling in love with Luke is not part of her plan but, to her surprise, Luke is falling for her too. The only thing preventing their happy ever after is Chloe herself. Will she ever truly learn to leave the past where it belongs?

Review

I really liked the balance that was present between these two characters. Chloe is damaged and has quite a bit to overcome from her past. Luke is domineering and the opposite of what she thinks she needs.

Luke, wow, he is hot hot hot! That really came through the pages for me. I think his connection with Chloe and how he pushed her was so perfectly done.

We are given a novel that does not unravel predictably and will keep the reader guessing and enjoying the ride the whole way through.  The story itself was engaging and the romance added to that.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

Finding time to write is a challenge. My full time job takes up my day and my martial arts coaching fills my evenings. The irregular pattern of free time means I need to make copious notes when ideas hit me, and I can incorporate them when I find time to write. Often I need to spend an hour reading my previous work to get back into the correct mindset and continue the book. It means I generally don’t suffer writer’s block, but the books take far longer to complete than I’d like.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

I don’t have an iPod or any Apple product (Android through and through). I don’t really listen to music outside of the car. That is mostly heavy metal but I have an eclectic taste. I enjoy Metallica, Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold, Korn, Classical Music, Queen, Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtracks, Jimmy Barnes, The Corrs, Michael Jackson, Evanescence and a heap of others. I tend to use music to adjust my mood for what I’m about to do. Driving to the gym to teach or train I want to be pumped so heavy metal goes to the top. I have used classical music to mellow me out if angry or if I am writing an especially emotional scene. That is rare though.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

Nothing formal. I tend to ask a few people to read the book and give me feedback once completed. My wife is the exception though. If something feels off with a scene, or if I’m particularly proud of one, I get her to read and critique it.
For my novels I have an unusual critique process. If I have an idea I generally create a similar scene or plot for my regular role-playing-game group. During gameplay they will usually find any plot holes I need to fill, and their reactions to the scene or characters shows me where I need to improve. I then take what I need into the novels.

What book are you reading now?

The Dirk Gently series from Douglas Adams. I’m nearly finished so will be seeking something new soon. My tastes change often and lately I’ve been after older classics like Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World and anything from HP Lovecraft.

How did you start your writing career?

I was constantly running Dungeons and Dragons games (as well as other RPGs) and found a lot of my plots were dropped as the game changed direction or characters died. Instead of ignoring them I had the idea of mixing them into a coherent story. In primary school we had creative writing and I always felt I sucked at it. The feedback on my first draft changed that perception as everyone I showed it to, friends and strangers alike enjoyed it. So I continued the tales.

Tell us about your next release.

It’s a new series called The Inquisitor Qyr Chronicles, fitting into the universe I created in my previous trilogy. It is a blend of fantasy, a touch of sci fi, wrapped in a detective blanket and set in a western era. The first book is Arson’s Canvas and tours a rich world filled with intrigue and running on elemental power.
Qyr is an Inquisitor for The Trust, the law enforcement agency of planet Volyce. He loves his job investigating serious crimes in a town not far removed from the frontier status during the rush for mining ore. One thing he loves more than his job is his privacy.
However that is threatened when a murderer destroys a monastery in a blast of fire only the greatest practitioners of the elements could muster.
The wanton destruction exposes secrets of several powerful organisations as Qyr conducts his inquisition. Secrets that shake the foundation of even The Trust itself.
That pales to the personal conflict for the Inquisitor. His extensive history is filled with details best left to the past. Balancing between privacy and duty, Qyr must learn the secrets of his birth before they attack the life he has built.
Who can he trust with enemies encroaching on all sides, even among those seeming to help?
Inquisitor Qyr chronicles his journey so he can understand a choice that will impact millions, and kill millions more.

The book is ready for the final draft and I’ve started on its sequel.

Excerpt

The next morning, Megan woke to her kittens racing across the bed. Peeking at the digital clock on her nightstand, she saw it was only five-thirty. She rolled on her back and tried to go back to sleep, but somehow Petey had seen her look at the alarm clock.

With a meow, he jumped back on the bed and started purring as he walked up Megan's chest. He sat briefly on her chest, staring at her before flopping against her face still purring. With his back and head against her chin, his fur tickled her nose.

“ACHOO,” Megan said, startling all the kittens off the bed.

“Sorry, guys. Petey, your fur tickled my nose. Okay, I’m up, and I know that's what you wanted.”

Megan stretched and yawned as she walked across her bedroom. She quickly put out the kittens food and then sat on the floor near them, still trying to wake up.

By 6 a.m. Megan was excited to go see Monty. She played with her kittens until she heard her parents moving around downstairs.

“I’ll be back, babies,” Megan promised as she shut the door to her room.

”Morning,” Megan said cheerfully to her parents as she entered the kitchen.

“Morning,” her dad said.

“You are up early,” her mom commented.

“Yeah, I’m so excited to go care for Monty this morning. I will get to see how a vet clinic runs, too.”

“It's good experience for you,” her dad agreed.

After breakfast and seeing her parents off to work, Megan went back to her room and dressed in jeans and a T shirt.

“Okay, kitten cats, I’m going to go take care of Monty. I have to feed him and let him play for an hour. I’ll be home by eleven for sure, and we will spend time together since I don't have to be back at the clinic until three-thirty.”

Megan kissed each of her babies and headed for Dr. Newton's office. The morning was still cool, so Megan didn't mind jogging the quarter mile.

It was just after eight when Megan pulled the Furry Friends Clinic doors open.

“Morning, Mary,” Megan said. She was happy that she had been introduced to the staff. Now she really felt like she was part of the vet’s office.

Megan approached Monty's cage. As usual, Monty was crouched on the platform at the back of his cage.

“Morning, sleepyhead. Do you want to come out and play?” Megan cooed, unlocking the cage door.

As she knelt by his cage, Monty eyed her for a moment before hesitantly approaching the door.

A client with two vocal basset hounds came into the lobby just as Monty was about to come out.

The basset hounds baying sent Monty scurrying back to the safety of his platform with a shrill scream.

“It's okay, Monty,” Megan soothed as she watched the woman with the basset hounds be led into an exam room.

It only took a moment of the lobby being quiet for Monty to come back down to the door. He stared at Megan, his big brown eyes already showed he trusted her.

With one quick leap, Monty landed on Megan's shoulder. Grabbing her hair, he balanced himself.

“Ow,” Megan cringed as he pulled her hair again and settled on her shoulder.

Once she was sure he was seated, she slowly got to her feet. With a hand on his back as she walked, Megan headed to the kitchen.

“Morning,” Cory greeted her.

“Morning,” Megan replied with a smile.

Cory took a few steps backward as Megan approached to get the toys from the cabinet.

“Monty's food is soaking, but it has only been about fifteen minutes,” Cory explained.

“Okay, we will play for a while. Thanks for making it,” said Megan.

Cory nodded and headed out of the room as another tech called his name.

Once Cory had left the room, Monty jumped from Megan’s shoulder to the counter. He opened his toy drawer and rummaged for the toy he wanted.

He found the keyring toy that he was looking for and handed it to Megan.

Megan took the toy from Monty and shook it gently in front of him so the keys rattled together.

Monty’s eyes lit up as he watched the colored keys dance.

When Megan held the keys still again, Monty took them and repeated Megan’s action. He was able to make the keys rattle, too.

He said, “Oooh, ooh, eee, aah.”

As he continued to shake the keys, he jumped off the counter and ran around the room rattling the keys and talking to himself.

Megan giggled at his antics as she watched him circle the room for the second time. As he passed her again, Megan sat down on the floor.

The next time Monty circled around, he ran up and jumped in Megan’s lap pushing the keys up to Megan’s nose.

Megan giggled again and playfully fell over backward.

Monty walked up her chest just like her kittens and rattled the keys in her face.

Megan covered her face with her hands so the keys couldn't hit her.

This action intrigued Monty. He dropped the keys and put his hands on Megan's attempting to pull her hands from her face.

Megan let him lift her hands up briefly. She smiled and said, “Boo!”

Then she quickly covered her face again.

Monty talked, “Ooh, ooh, eee, aaa, “ as he pulled Megan's hands from her face a few more times.

After the fourth boo, Monty was bored with the game and wandered over to the cabinets.

“No, Monty, come play with your blocks,” Megan said, pulling the bucket of blocks to the middle of the room and dumping them on the floor.

Monty left the cabinets and came over to where Megan sat. He dug through the blocks and found two red ones. He put one on the ground and started hammering it using the other block.

Megan watched him work and then started building a tower. She got her tower to be a foot tall before Monty took interest and knocked it over with a quick backhanded motion.

“Monty, you knocked my tower down. I was building that,” Megan laughed.

Megan built the tower again. This time he helped her put the blocks in place. Once the tower got to be a foot tall, he knocked it over again.

Megan rolled her eyes and glanced up at the clock.

“Okay, Monty, your food should be ready. Let's give you some breakfast.”

Megan got up and opened the door to the refrigerator. As she searched the shelves for Monty's containers, he came up to her side. Grabbing a handful of her jeans and then a handful of her shirt, he climbed up to her shoulder and peered in the refrigerator too.

“Good boy,” Megan praised as she grabbed the two containers from the shelf and shut the door. Monty watched from Megan’s shoulder as she combined the vegetables and fruit together and then mixed up the pellets and canned food.

Once in the lobby, Megan poured the contents of the containers in the dishes in Monty’s cage. Monty hopped into his cage eager to check out his food dishes. Megan sat on the floor in front of his cage, watching to make sure Monty ate. He dug through both bowls. Once he had a carrot piece in one hand and a pellet in the other, Monty climbed out of his cage and onto Megan's lap. Monty chewed on his chosen pieces of food for a few minutes. Then he dropped them on the floor and went to retrieve two new pieces.

Tess came up to the front to talk to Mary. “Cooper the Shih Tzu that checked in on Saturday isn't eating. What else can I offer him?”

Mary pulled his file from the cabinet behind her. After reading it for a moment, she replied, “He has severe food allergies. You can't give him anything but what his owner brought.”

Tess sighed and returned to the back.

Megan couldn't help but ask, “What will Tess do to get Cooper to eat?”

“We do several things here. Sometimes adding hot water to their food makes them eat. I'm not sure what all she has tried already,” Mary replied.

Megan nodded. Despite not knowing Cooper, Megan felt bad for him.

It had to be so scary being boarded when you're a dog. It has to be terrible to not understand when or if your mom is coming back. I will ask Tess about Cooper this afternoon and try to help.

Monty had eaten two thirds of his food. The remains of pieces were scattered across Megan's lap, but Monty had went to his platform to rest.

Megan cleaned the floor and shut Monty's cage door.

“See you this afternoon,” Megan said to Monty and Mary.

Her mind raced as she walked home. Monty is so fun to care for. He is so easy. I don't think I could ever board my kittens. They would be so scared. I hope Tess can get Cooper to eat. I know I could help Cooper if I was allowed to spend time with him.

How do you dethrone a heart when its owner has stolen your kingdom?

Altarn is used to tolerating the biases of men. It comes with being the first female to secure the political State Head of Blindvar. But Kaelin, the State Head of Ruidenthall, crosses the line when he proposes a merger of their two states. Altarn has reason to believe this is Kaelin’s attempt to make himself king of both. Believing it’s her responsibility to “dethrone” him, she rides to her last ally to ask for aid.

While on the road, she’s kidnapped and taken to Ruidenthall. She wakes from a drug-induced sleep to hear about a foreign army marching upon Blindvar, and Kaelin capitalizing on her kidnap to make himself king. He threatens her life if she tells anyone, but she will suffer tyranny under a king if she does not.

When the final battle forces her hand, she has but one choice: to save Kaelin’s life or let him die. She never expected to dethrone his heart instead.

My thoughts

I enjoyed The War Queen, the concept was interesting and unique. The story was well written and most of The War Queen was at good fast pace. The characters were good but I needed just a bit more development, I wanted to learn more about them. There was a great romance aspect to the story. I enjoyed the ride we were taken on and how everything unfolded in the end. I had just enough Fantasy/Romance/and even Mystery to keep me flipping pages all of the way through.

PROMO Blitz: The Sapphire Song by Todd Erick Pedersen #excerpt

Coming of Age, Spiritual Fiction
Publisher: Balboa Press

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

The time and the place are universal. Metaxaeus, a youthful yet visionary sculptor, will embark on an odyssey in which he will at last meet face to face with Akasha, a talented storyteller from a distant township. Set in a simple landscape of mountains and rivers, The Sapphire Song is a meditation on the possibilities of love, when seen in the light of the spirit. Underscoring a fidelity to the sacred dimension of life, that so often reveals itself to us in the inmost presence of our dreams, and written with the poignancy of a parable, this timeless story is an evocation of the spiritual power, and the lasting truth, inherent in our quest for an enduring love.

Praise for The Sapphire Song:

"Pedersen's work is considerably more esoteric than your average teen-geared supernatural romance. The Sapphire Song is a subtle religious allegory in a gently fantastical wrapping, echoing works from Tolkien to Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha."  -  Foreword Reviews

Excerpt

From Book One:

In a different town far away from the village of Metaxaeus, a young girl, Akasha, spins her tales. Like the most skilled weaver, she has a gift for storytelling that is as preternatural in the world as anyone’s gift for doing anything, as anybody’s gift for doing anything at all.

For the tales she tells cause even the most wizened of hearts to belong to her as she unfolds her breathless stories. Young and old alike smile and laugh and weep and finally joy at the spirit and romance of these on-spinning motifs of love and trials and perseverance and even the ways of God and now and then ultimately even the ways of the greatest mystery of all, that of the source of creation itself. See in her thought, then, in her speech, and in her stories, questions encircling questions, and riddles answering to riddles. Akasha is gifted like none other.

The question arises, then, in the minds of her hearers, whence always this fountain of inner peace and wisdom and joy and creativity arising from the soul of such a youngster, and one apparently virgin in the ways of the world? The almighty taleteller-girl Akasha has, in her town and its environs, gotten to be quite the spectacle. Yet what of her own mind?

In one of her most popular stories she spins the tale of a youth with gifted hands who can sculpt any image from any stone, but who cannot figure out how to leave from his home. In this story told by Akasha endings vary and at times the boy makes his fortune and lives happily, in love with a girl from a distant city, but at others it ends badly and the boy at the last finds himself both broke and heartbroken, alone and darkly arthritic, bereft of the great and wonderful gift of his holy craft.

Let us not forget, however, that Akasha, away down in her heart, knows more than we do; and perhaps that is why in her thoughts she sometimes dreams of meeting just this youth sculptor wandered away from his very distant village, and his very distant home.

From Book Two:

Akasha awakes. Rises from bed; greets the day. Finishes her morning chores, and begins listening for the music, the music within, the music generally escaping her way, at this selfsame hour of the day. Her own orison of play…. She had once been up and away into the mountains, this when she was still but just a little girl. Lost for a moment, she bumped into a strange looking elderly man who claimed to be a magician. When he smiled at her, her feeling of uneasiness vanished, and she found she could not help but smile, too. He is the one who first talked to Akasha about the mystery of spirit, but up until a certain age she had always considered it far more important the moment when he touched with his hand her forehead, for that is when she felt dizzy for a minute, and afterwards when the feeling she always carried inside of her when telling her stories, began.

Now in the mornings and sitting still awaiting the music that comes floating its way into her room, into her heart, into her mind, she thinks often of that afternoon when she encountered the magician. Strange man. Strange things to say to one so young. What did he know? He spoke of the spirit as invisible, as everywhere, as continually aware of everything and everyone, including itself, and he spoke of its connection to the Maker of the World, and to each one of us. He laughed, then, and went on to say only that if you wanted to be in its presence, you would have to learn to sit very still, and to go all the way within yourself. This all he did say, and then he winked slyly and right at that moment must have handed to her a token, pressed into her open palm, although she was not aware of it at the moment that it happened. All she knew was that when she looked down at her hand she held in it a tiny figurine, and when she looked up again the old man was nowhere to be seen. As far as she could tell, the thing he had presumably pressed into the palm of her hand was nothing but the tiny statue of a boy, a boy who himself held something out in the palm of his own hand, but what it was, was far too small to make out. Since then, though, she had always kept the tiny statue in a place special to her, and that where no one else would be likely to find it. Until one day she realized that it had become precious to her, and she even imagined that when she was feeling cloudy or distressed, she could take up into her hands this trinket and begin to recover her calm or her clarity. She was beginning to get very superstitious.
