What is the hardest part of writing your books?
Never ever having enough time. I have basically six to nine months for each one. In an ideal world, I'd have three years to write each book! But that's not the way it works in the commercial crime genre!
What songs are most played on your iPod?
Oh, I love this question! At the moment, a lot of stuff from musicals. I love musicals and would love to write one one day. So: 'Naughty' from Matilda, 'Hasa Diga Eebowai' from the The Book of Mormon, 'Jet Song' from West Side Story, 'If I Were a Bell' from Guys and Dolls, 'A Hymn to Him' from My Fair Lady...
Do you have critique partners or beta readers?
Yes! I have a wonderful critique partner, Emily Winslow, who is also a crime writer. We comment on each other's works in progress and it is amazingly helpful and fun.
What book are you reading now?
The Dogs of Littlefield by Suzanne Berne. Someone is murdering dogs in a respectable suburban neighbourhood, and I want to know why!
How did you start your writing career?
I started to publish poems at the age of 7 or 8, in local newspapers and kids' magazines. My first published book was a picture book for children called Carrot the Goldfish, about a boy who tries to trick his short-sighted grandma into believing a bit of carrot peel floating in water is a goldfish! But Grandma has an idea of how to trick him even more effectively... Even when writing for seven-year-olds, my mind is very twisty!
