Nomad Outlaws Trilogy, Book One

Romantic Suspense

Date Published: 08-31-2018

Four years ago Rebel claimed Ginger to keep them both alive, and then she disappeared. Bike Week at Daytona Beach brings them back together. He's a dangerous nomad. A ruthless killer. But he's her addiction, and she's his. Can they keep the past where it belongs and move forward, or is it too late?

Excerpt

I grabbed Ginger by the hand and pulled her out of the room, down the hall and to the bathroom. Her resistance was futile, her fear unimportant. I knew what I had to do, and if she were smart, she'd realize it, too. If she wanted to live. I opened the bathroom door and yanked her inside, thankful that I found it empty. It was filthy, but better than nothing, and it had a shower that everyone used when they felt the need to be clean, which wasn't often.

Ginger spun around when I shut the door, the look of a trapped animal in her pretty blues. I ignored her growing terror, steeling myself for what I had to do. Even behind closed doors I had to make it real, had to be convincing that I was an unfeeling bastard. I saw her swallow, could see her tits rising and falling rapidly as the fear of the unknown overwhelmed her. She was expecting the worst, preparing herself to do whatever she had to do to survive.

"Take off your clothes." I kept my tone harsh, indifferent to her growing panic.

***No cheating. No cliffhangers. Dangerous and Furious completes the trilogy.

Excerpt from The Body Politic

We entered China through Xinjiang province and traversed the high Takli Makan Desert overnight. In the morning, the train stood for several hours in Dunhuang, changing personnel from Russian to Chinese and taking on supplies. I watched from the window while porters in tunics and baggy pants loaded goods from a cart. They stopped suddenly, and the noise subsided, so I craned my neck to glimpse the source of the interruption. Some Blackshirts were hustling a group of peasant families, tied together with ropes and shuffling in obvious fear, across the tracks and down the causeway toward a holding area. Laborers returned to their work with measured gestures, careful not to attract unwanted attention, and the way closed behind the new arrivals.

I told myself that this repression was not my problem; I was just passing through.

Presently, a detachment of Russian soldiers wearing blue uniforms with red tooling took up positions outside our VIP car at the end of the train. The officer entered with authority and tucked his hat under one arm. Rufus stood squarely in the aisle with his knees bent and a hand on his knife hilt. The officer stopped.

After a moment, he looked past Rufus’s shoulder to me. “You are Brianna Miller of Arim?” he asked in English. “We are assigned.”

“I have security already, as you can see.”

“These, uh, warriors are included in our detail. The train now enters a province with some, uh, social unrest. Daniel Chin is concerned that your group experiences no, uh, in-con-ven-nience.” His hesitant words and rounded accent made me think his English was newly learned, perhaps his third language.

“Nu delaya,” I said, and Rufus relaxed his posture. Kyros placed a big hand on the officer’s shoulder from behind and led him to a seat several paces from me.

“What do you propose?” I asked.

“We will take the adjacent car and establish a presence around your group.”

“The adjacent car is for the students.”

“They may have to move forward.”

“How many in your squad?”

“Twelve.”

“I cannot provide for twelve. Six only.”

“We brought provisions, and you will be glad for twelve before we reach Beijing. I am Captain Chandliss, and you may direct any questions to me.”

“Captain Chandliss, I assume you are Lithuanian by birth, and your real name has two ‘z’s and three ‘k’s.”

He only smirked.

“Are the soldiers from your same province?” I asked.

“Most of them.”

“Why not provide a Han Chinese detachment to manage our security?”

“My orders were brief,” he said as he twisted to see where Kyros had stationed himself. “I gathered that your Dolviet escort would resent Blackshirts as security.”

I grinned. At least he had the sense to acknowledge what anyone could see. “And what else did Daniel Chin say in conversation?”

The captain didn’t react to the mention of Daniel Chin’s name. “Orders from Paris didn’t mention a bevy of students. You do have accommodations for them on the shuttle and the Company yacht?”

“My arrangements are made,” I said tolerantly. “Thank you for your interest. The students will remain where they are, and you will take the next car. Since you have twelve men and provisions, I expect that the students will remain as safe as I am safe.”

Captain Chandliss watched me for a moment. “Well. The train leaves in twenty minutes, so I’ll excuse myself to put all in good order.” He stood and nodded, unable to break military training. “Ah, how may I address these warriors?”

“Rufus, the son of Cyrus the ketiwhelp killer,” I said with a hand gesture. “And behind you is Kyros rabbe Sudl of Southeast Arrivi.”

He nodded to each warrior. “Ma’am,” he said and left.

Kyros looked at Rufus and mouthed “ma’am” with humor. Rufus covered his mouth with one hand to hide his response.

Later, I was called into the student car, I assumed due to the presence of soldiers. But the issue was trivial; something about a stolen item and whom to punish. The boys waited in a silent row, cynical and without gestures. The oldest girl Bernice was in tears, as were two eight-year-olds. I sighed, regretting my decision to include them in my travel plans.

Leah approached with submissive gestures. “These ones need daily lessons to keep their minds off homesickness. They need a common goal.”

I immediately thought of an old method Hakulupe Le had used in the Somule schools to bind students as a group, a method she had learned in prison, in fact. I spoke to the group. “Not all of you will board the shuttle to engage in space travel. I have accommodations for only seven, including the boys, so I must choose who is most worthy. To make this choice, we will devise a test. You will each share your history with the others, and at track’s end in three days’ time, you will each write the biographies of all the others, including the boys. After reading those papers, I will decide who remains with the clutch and who will return to their province. That is all.”

Leah quickly spoke. “May we have writing paper?”

“I will ask Captain Chandliss.”

“May we take our meals in the dining car?”

“What difference does that make?”

“Please.”

“Captain Chandliss manages your safety now. I’ll ask him.”

“Thank you, Rularim. Thanks again.” Leah knew when to flatter.

“I am not Rularim. I’m Brianna Miller.”

“We all thank you.”

“Yes, well. No more complaining and no crying.” I left before she could make another request.

Less than an hour later, Captain Chandliss came into my car. Kyros stopped him at the door but let him pass after a tense moment. “The students want their meals in the dining car. I have no authority for this.”

“Negotiate with the porters,” I instructed, “so the group can take a meal after the other diners have left, twice a day. Ask for a set menu with bland dishes because they have to board the shuttle soon. No sweets from the dessert tray but maybe rice pudding for each.”

His posture emphasized his disbelief. “Do you understand the expense?”

“Rufus will pay from the treasure of Kyle Rula.”

The disbelieving look on the captain’s face wandered to the warrior who was seated at a laptop with his back to us. Rufus turned slowly to fix me with a level stare. He opened the pouch at his belt and extracted a single uncut emerald as big as my thumb knuckle and placed it next to me. The gem was opaque with a sandpaper texture. Without glancing at the captain, Rufus turned back to the computer screen.

I saw the eyes of Captain Chandliss grow large at the sight of the gem. “Have it assayed at the next stop,” I said. “Then pay the porters for their trouble and distribute the remainder among your soldiers.”

The captain stood tall and looked at each of us, perhaps taking a moment to assess the opportunity. “My detachment will bear the current expense. I will have the gem appraised in Beijing where its value is far greater. I will subtract a commission for our service with the students and return the remainder to Rufus before your party boards the shuttle. We will take eight percent.”

“Four percent,” I said.

“Six percent.”

“Four point five percent, and no gratuity.”

“Done.” The captain scooped up the gem and turned on his heel. He left hurriedly, passing through the door that Kyros was holding open, just as though he needed to escape before I changed my mind.

Kyros said, “Much is learned about a man when he resists temptation.”

Angelica Delfino takes a special interest in the lives of her three nieces, whom she affectionately calls the daughters of her heart. Spellbound, the nieces listen as Angelica travels back six decades to reveal an incredulous tale of forbidden love, tragic loss, and reinvention. Excerpt

Tupperware in all the pastel shades. Head-to-toe clothing and accessories in the same hues. Who does that? Bellastrega shook her head at the avalanche of plastic that accompanied Velia Russo into the kitchen. She was already on her third trip back from the car, puffing and panting as she placed her food gifts on the kitchen table. Bellastrega could feel her jaw clenching at the thought of all those white devils—heavy sauces and creams and pounds of sugar—contaminating the kitchen.

Velia held one finger. “One more trip,” and then she was gone.

Bellastrega turned her attention back to the hearty vegetable stew that had been simmering on the stove. She sighed contentedly as she breathed in the aroma of the rosemary and Italian seasonings. Angelica’s favorite. As she glanced at the appetizing array of vegetables, she mentally calculated how long it would take to finish cooking. Everything was on schedule, and dinner would be on the table at six o’clock. Why had Velia decided to arrive three hours early?

From the start, Bellastrega had her misgivings about this all-girls weekend. She had listened while Angelica lovingly described each niece and shared her concerns regarding their unhappy lives. At first, Bellastrega had humored her, not realizing Angelica was intending to help her nieces get back on track. Her duty as aunt, she had explained.

Bellastrega had formed her own judgments regarding the three younger women. Usually right on target, Bellastrega had been surprised when this particular incarnation of Velia Russo arrived, laden with her food gifts. From Angelica’s descriptions, Bellastrega had expected a younger version of her mother, Rosetta, a heavy-set hausfrau and gossip, not this glamour-puss who could pass for a younger Martha Stewart. But first impressions could be deceiving.

Help. I need your help.” The whiny voice interrupted Bellastrega’s thoughts. Sighing, she lowered the heat and made her way to the living room.

Bellastrega resisted the urge to laugh as she took in the comical sight before her. To save herself another trip, Velia had decided to lug in a large Pullman using her left hand, carry a pastry box in her right hand, and use her teeth to hold on to her purse.

All this for a weekend get-together? What would she have packed for a longer trip? Bellastrega forced a smile as she took the pastry box from Velia.

 Excerpt

October 07, 1943, Ba-Da-Ling, China
Colorful autumn leaves covered the land fifty miles northwest of Peking, the old capital of China. On the ridges of meandering mountains lay the ancient Great Wall among the green cypresses and red maples. At the highest peak of the mountain stood the North No. 8 Beacon Tower, a rectangular gray structure surrounded by low bushes and exposed rocks. Numerous bullet holes scarred its side wall.

 photo pic_zpsp3b5zxfx.png

To the south of the tower, a shadow suddenly appeared on a large flat rock. It was Tiger. From there, he looked back to the east for a few seconds before jumping onto the firing dais on the wall, which was about twenty-five feet above the ground. Then he disappeared into the beacon tower.

Down the flight of stairs, Tiger walked into a large room with a sand table in the middle. By the sand table, three officers in different uniforms were having a discussion. In the background, several staff members were busy at their own tasks.

“Attention, North Command Post,” the soldier at the door announced. “Salute!”

After exchanging greetings with General Aleksandr Vasilevsky, Generaloberst Heinz Guderian, and General Yoshijiro Umezu, Tiger went right to the battle planning against Tio’s army in Northern China.

“I just came back from the Ju-Yong Pass down the valley. Tio left no troop at the Ming’s Tombs. To the east of the pass, barely any sentry posts in sight.” Tiger spoke in English. “It looks like they have completely pulled back to the city of Peking. How are your preparations, Generals?”

“My Kwantung Army had crossed the Shan-Hai Pass several days ago. About two hundred thousand infantries were in place along the Chao-Bei River,” said Umezu. “We don’t have many airplanes left. Only about one hundred fifty are battle ready in Hsinking.”

“I have the Seventeenth Army and the Mongolian Cavalry Group in place to strike. The Twelfth Air Army are in Tamsagbulag. Two thousand planes will be ready,” Vasilevsky said in English with a heavy Russian accent. “The Thirty-sixth Army, Thirty-ninth Army, Fifty-third Army are back on the Mongolian grassland together with the Sixth Guards Tank Army. Artillery and tanks can only move after infantry starts the attack. It will take quite a few days to move all our forces to the battlefield.”

“This is good. Once they arrive, join the battle immediately. Tactically, our goal is to get our artillery within firing range and start hitting Tio’s battleship. It will be great if we can sustain the assault for three to four days,” said Tiger.

“Mr. Generaloberst, how about your Tigers?” Tiger turned to Guderian. “I like how you named your tanks.”

“They are back on the grassland but a little closer, in Ulanqab. Tigers are heavy and logistically more complicated. So they may arrive at the battlefield later,” answered Guderian.

“Hopefully, your lubricant will not freeze on a cold autumn day in China,” Vasilevsky joked. “Per Comrade Zhukov.”

“It was extremely cold in Moscow and our lubricant did freeze.” Guderian’s face flushed. “My Tigers will be here as we planned.”

“Generals!” Tiger raised his voice. “Let’s go over the northern battle plan of Operation Mad Cow once more, before the radio time. General Umezu, your infantry will start from the east at eleven hundred hours when the ground warms up. Please remind your soldiers to set all houses on fire as they go.”

“Yes, sir. Thermal background noises.”

“General Vasilevsky, all the heavy equipment will start moving south at nine hundred hours. Your infantry and air army will attack at thirteen hundred hours from the west.”

“Yes, sir. The first wave of tanks will join the battle around noon time the day after tomorrow,” confirmed Vasilevsky.

“Generaloberst Guderian, please make sure your Tigers will arrive for the main tank assault,” Tiger said. “I will probably ride with you. With your Tigers, we will have the best chance to get our artillery to the Sand River Line for a shot at Battleship Number Four parked at the Old Summer Palace.”

“Absolutely,” agreed Guderian. “It will be an honor to…”

“Excuse me, Generals,” a staff member interrupted Guderian with a headset in his hand, “it is radio time.”

“Good, we want Tio to know that we are coming,” Tiger murmured as everyone stopped talking.

The staff member unplugged his headset from the radio and out came the voice of President Roosevelt.

“Good day, people of America!”

Roosevelt’s greeting was followed by the voices of other world leaders in their native tongues.

“People of China.”

“People of the Soviet Union.”

“People of Japan.”

“People of Germany.”

“People of Great Britain.”

“And the people of the world. Tomorrow, October 8, 1943—a date which will live on in human history—if there is still one,” said Roosevelt. Each leader repeated the same paragraph after him in his own language.

“The United States of America, the Republic of China, the Soviet Union, The Empire of Japan, The Reich, and Great Britain together will go to war against an alien force who suddenly and deliberately attacked us with the intention to annihilate the very existence of mankind.”

People around the globe were listening, holding their breath.

“Our world was in a state of chaos and we were at war with each other—for what? Territories, ideologies, or supremacies. We never realized how childish and ignorant we were until our very existences were in grave danger. Indeed, one city after another—Manhattan, Shimonoseki, Nanking, Moscow, Rome, Munich, and London—was obliterated in a matter of seconds. Even a tiny island in the Indian Ocean was wiped out by a single strike from the sky. From that day, nothing will be the same again for mankind.”

Across East Asia, infantrymen on the Great Wall were listening; drivers of BM-8-24 Katyusha rocket launchers were listening; crews of Tiger tanks in the Mongolian grassland were listening; gunners on the battleship Yamato were listening; pilots of B-17 bombers in Oita Airfield were listening; sailors on the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid were listening. By the Leaning Tower of the Tiger Hill Pagoda in Suzhou, White-Goat, Black-Fish, and CJ were listening.

“For the first time, the people of Earth have put aside their differences and formed an opinion on the implications to the very life and safety of our civilization. For the first time in history, we are truly united,” Roosevelt said with force. “A new United Nations has been democratically formed to direct all the measures for our defense.

“As the president of the United States, I pledge my country to the United Nations and mankind,” he announced.

Roosevelt was followed by other world leaders.

“As the chairman of the Republic of China.”

“As the premier of the Soviet Union.”

“As the chancellor of Germany.”

“As the prime minister of Great Britain.”

“As the emperor of Japan.”

At this moment, the image of the Japanese delegates bowing to their skinny translator prior to the recording session of the Bermuda Summit flashed across CJ’s mind.

How could I not see this at the first glance?

Although Hirohito was heavily disguised, but those thick glasses!

The voice of Roosevelt continued, “Today, the world declared in one voice: we will not go quietly into the night! Tomorrow, we will fight. No matter how much sacrifice it may cost. No matter how long it may take. We will fight, fight for the existence of mankind.”

Roosevelt’s voice became stronger and stronger.

“Our United Forces may be far inferior, the final victory may not be inevitable, but we will fight, fight till the last resistance vanishes on the surface of our home planet — so help us God, FIGHT!”
