Autobiography

Date Published: February 14, 2023

Publisher: MindStir Media

Do you ever wonder who you really are? Richard Cole was front page news a few weeks after his birth in 1944, but this was something he never knew. He did know he was adopted and he did wonder who he really was. But, as a young adult, he wondered much more about finding success, a simple goal that seemed so elusive.

He was 19 when he married his high school sweetheart and took off, full speed, into the adult world. Harsh reality and his failure to focus on long-term goals made his desire to succeed just an unlikely dream.

He finally took control of his life and made the climb up to a nice middle-class life. Along with his wife, two really cute kids, and a new suburban home, they were the picture of a perfect little family. Then the dream evaporated and Richard's life began a downward spiral that ended with him alone and subsisting on food stamps and unemployment checks. But Richard had met someone on his way down, someone who stuck with him during the bad times. She gave him a reason to keep trying, and hope that things would get better.

This lighthearted autobiography takes you along on Richard's quest to find success in life and shares his discovery of the distant secrets that surrounded who he really was.

"Find yourself getting stuck in a zigzag of life's twists and turns, unsure of where you'll land? Richard Cole certainly has and Distant Secrets maps out his journey through hardships and gains and everything in between. He opens up to share his intimate world of experiences and the "moments of stunning mental clarity" that have guided him along the way."

EXCERPT

PREFACE

“I’m not a well-known politician, an influential investment banker, or a sports legend. I’m not even a movie star who thinks he has all the answers to the world’s problems. I’m just a normal person. My family and friends would probably say “abnormal,” but I’m sticking with normal since I’m the one writing.

Being in my seventies, I find myself reflecting on my life much more than when I was younger. My memories play back like so many highlight scenes from old favorite movies. Each scene pops up accompanied by mental comments such as “Oh, I had forgotten about that” or “I can’t believe I was that stupid.” Sometimes I get a “Way to go, Richard, you were the man!” and there are always a few “I wonder what would have happened if…?” thoughts.

Those old memory highlights came in handy when my high school class of 1962 was preparing for one of our reunions. The organizers gave us a homework assignment to provide some information about our lives since high school that could be posted on the reunion website.

I started writing, but I just couldn’t get the ideas flowing, thankfully, it turned out to be easier than I first thought. All I had to do was relax and let the old memories play back in my head while I took notes.

As I wrote about myself, I made it a point to be very honest, although I’m not sure that’s expected when you’re trying to look good for your old school friends.

I included representative highlights of the good and the not-so-good, and it wasn’t long before it was finished. There it was, my entire life’s story reduced down to a page and a half.

It was more than a little depressing. My entire life only filled a page and a half. That little punch to my ego felt better after I thought about all the interesting and unusual things that didn’t make the final cut for that short article. I realized there was more than a page and a half to my life.

That one act of writing down a summary of my life led me to an unexpected and pleasing realization. While I have not conquered the world like every high school kid thinks they will, and I don’t believe anyone will be making a movie about my “incredible” life, I have had a good, full life punctuated with many interesting and unusual experiences.

That realization, and having friends telling me I should write a book, got me thinking about it. I had never written a book, and since I had suffered a condition that made it difficult to read, I found the idea both challenging and appealing. Then it started; a little but highly annoying voice in my head joined in to pester me. “Write a book, write a book, write a book.”

That is why I wrote this book. The next question is, why should you read it? Well, I think you will find it interesting, entertaining and worth the price, but I can’t guarantee that. However, I can guarantee that every story and every event I describe in this book is presented just the way it happened. I promised myself I would keep it factual.

Oh, I should also let you know I have not used the real names of many people mentioned in this book. But, if they want to tell you it was them, that’s fine with me.

Bullied to death in the boardroom?

Private Investigator Rebecca Marte doubted it. Since when would the president and CEO of a highly successful company find the criticisms of his subordinates so destructive to his self-image that he would commit suicide? That, however, was what her new client, Nicole Veles, claimed.

Nicole painted a toxic, if not criminal, picture of defamation leading up to the man’s death. His problems were more than just the company’s bottom line. They ranged from public ridicule of some of his out-of-date marketing concepts that had been leaked to the press to a police report from a young man who claimed the president and CEO had propositioned him. And after his demise, one of his most vocal detractors ascended to his position. That was enough to raise Rebecca’s suspicions. She took the job.

But as she began her investigation, hints that Nicole’s beliefs were tainted by her history became difficult for Rebecca to ignore. Two years earlier, Nicole had been kidnapped, and she still bore the mental and emotional scars of abuse and captivity. She’d cut all connections to her friends and fled her past by relocating to Colorado where no one knew her. She took a job where long-term relationships were impossible, save one stubborn older woman who wouldn’t take no for an answer—and who just happened to be the wife of the suicide victim

While everyone else thought the man’s death, while tragic, was just the consequence of high-pressure business and depression over the loss of the company he had founded, could Rebecca trust anything to the contrary that her new client told her?

“Tension is well-developed, whether it's psychological revelations that involve Rebecca more deeply in her client's life than she'd imagined, the wedge between client and investigator driven home by the victim’s wife, or the probe of a business structure that supports dangerous undercurrents.”

About the Author

Until ten years ago, I was a human factors psychologist doing research on cutting edge technologies like virtual reality and artificial intelligence at a major aerospace company. The aim? Fit these technologies to the way people learn, remember, and do their jobs, not the other way around. But if the world can be shaped to work with us, it can just as surely be molded to destroy us.

Now, I’m an author writing “The Mind Sleuth Series”, stories where the evil side of research and science too often surface. Sometimes the devastation is unintentional. Sometimes, it’s motivated by greed or passion, but it’s always a race to see if and how my heroes—Doc, Nicole, Rebecca—can turn the tide.

In 1944, a German artillery shell destroyed Milt Greenlee’s future in professional baseball. His hideously scarred face and useless arm require him to relearn and recondition. But no amount of rehab will restore his looks or his self-confidence. There’s no chance a “cripple” like him could catch the eye of the stunning Nurse McEwen

Army Nurse, Annie McEwen dreams her voice will take her far away from her hateful, overbearing father. She hopes Milt, a patient who fought in Sicily, might be the one who can help her find closure with the death of her cousin.

As their attraction grows, how can their relationship survive Annie's fears and Milt's secret?

Excerpt

She pushed his wheelchair down the wide hallway oblivious to his wishes. A damn show wouldn't fix what couldn’t be fixed. And it wouldn’t make him forget either.

His chair jerked to a halt in the middle of the hallway. “Annie, you’re gorgeous,” his nurse exclaimed.

Milt glanced up. A dazzling woman approached. He instinctively straightened in his chair. Even with only one eye, he could appreciate the way the deep blue evening gown set off her curves. How her dark red hair framed her creamy, heart-shaped face.

His battered heart stuttered at the sight.

The wind blew bitter cold on the overcast early morning when Prince Ranid the Bold and his army rolled into town, and it matched the attitude of the people. The few men who were left in the ranks watched the bedraggled and exhausted inhabitants stagger toward their town’s entrance, while the sounds of their war horses’ shoes loudly striking the dirt-covered cobblestones encouraged a lone hound to throw back its head and howl mournfully at the still present moon.

The few lights glowed enough to illuminate the remains of a once prosperous town now fallen into ruin. A lone, sickly-looking goat bleated as it wandered through, its dented bell clanking miserably in the night air while a lone owl hooted in the distance.

The place smelled of neglect and misuse. Most of the buildings that surrounded the courtyard and what looked to be the center of town appeared derelict, missing windows, wood siding sliding off of their sides, paint so old and weatherworn that it looked like it hadn’t been refreshed in years.

Prince Ranid the Bold, on his once proud white steed, stood up in the stirrups and declared for all to hear, “What a fucking dump.”

“Well, fuck you too, asshole!” a drunk leaning on a pole outside of the town’s only tavern called out. “Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.”

That gave the whole army pause before a tall, black-haired, green-eyed man’s laugh barked out, startling the few who wore his bright red colors before they began to chuckle as well.

“What?” The green-eyed Prince Colton of Rinastas called to the other disgusted prince’s soldiers. “Out here with no resources but what little nature has left, you expected to find a lavish palace fit for your royal ass?” He shook his head, amusement plain in every line of his body. “This is war, boy. No one is going to be around to hold your hand or wipe Your Highness’s backside for you. The people who live in this area make do with what they have.”

“And who do these people hold loyalty to?” Prince Ranid demanded, settling back into his saddle, his face slightly red because yes, he expected some sort of accommodation for the royals at least. He didn’t expect this place to be so… desolate.

“I believe they pay a once a year tax to the people of the Eastern Kingdoms -- the missing princess’s kingdom -- and then they are largely left alone. This is dragon territory after all,” Prince Colton explained. “No one has a real hold on it but because part of it scrapes against the princess’s kingdom, it is to her people that these hard-working individuals pay their taxes and what little tribute they can give.”

“No way.” Ranid rolled his eyes, crossing his arms and pouting like a child as he absorbed what Colton was telling him. “The kingdom renowned for its beauty wouldn’t let a place like this exist and tarnish their good name. This is a disgrace.”

From beside him on his own warhorse, Lord Petyr of The Eastern Kingdoms shook his head in embarrassment. How had he ever found the loud, obnoxious, and abrasive prince beautiful? Things had cooled significantly since he started seeking his own privacy and comfort in the bold red tent that Prince Colton had lent him. Sure, he was no longer in the man’s bed but anyone would think about waiting a full five minutes before another filled Petyr’s former position there. And Petyr knew from personal experience that when Ranid was distracted or angry, the whole act would take about five minutes… from start to finish.

“If you say so.” Colton snickered to himself, unwilling to engage the spoiled brat of a prince in any type of intellectual debate. As far as this asshole was concerned, if something wasn’t up to his ridiculous standards, then he would most likely dismiss it, and Colton was not up for this kind of stupidity. He could be back at his tent getting some shut-eye after a long and tedious… in every way imaginable… campaign march. He was tired, his ass hurt for all the wrong reasons, and now his head was starting to hurt as well from listening to the bitching and griping of the brat prince. The only amusement he’d found during this whole rush to an ass kicking was the delightfully sarcastic Lord Petyr.

The man was pretty, though his downcast eyes and guilty expression detracted from that somewhat. The man did know his mind though, and only consented to be abused a short time before, with some encouraging words, he struck out on his own. He was intelligent and sharp as he offered several pride-protecting alternatives to the idiot prince as they traveled that would allow him to pull out of his stupid march and still save face. Colton’s favorite idea was to just play this was an inspection and introduction tour to see what changes needed to be made before they reported back to the King of the Eastern Lands.

Of course, Rancid the Bol -- Ranid… Ranid the Bold ignored every idea offered and was hellbent on completing his quest no matter the cost. So far, he’d managed to lose a few tents, a few of his soldiers deserted because of the insanity that they were surrounded by, diseases was starting to run rampant through his men -- the sexually transmitted kind of course, because at this point the prince had more camp followers that loyal soldiers -- and he was losing the best aide-de-camp that Colton had ever seen.

Filled with righteous indignation, Ranid dismounted his tired horse with a huff and led the poor beast to what appeared to be an inn and tethered him to the post out front.

Petyr and Colton also dismounted and followed the upstart prince inside. They stepped into the dim light allowed by the open shutters of what appeared to be windows with some kind of glass. The rough wooden floors were dusty. Goodness knows how everything in this town was not covered in dust, but it looked like someone had tried to sweep it relatively clean. Several long wooden bench-style tables sat in rows on either side of the room, the bar along the back wall blocking access to what had to be a small kitchen in the back.

“You call this place an inn?” Rancid was already ranting at a disinterested woman who was slowly wiping down a battered bar with a dirty rag.

“That’s what the sign used to say.” She snorted, rolling her eyes and dropping the rag to the floor.

“Used to,” Ranid snarled, leaning on the bar… only to jerk his hand back as it encountered what had to be the remains of someone’s greasy dinner… or a body fluid. Who could tell?

“Used to.” The woman walked over to stand before him, her hefty body covered in a stained smock, her arms crossed over her chest as she stuck out her chin in an aggressive manner. “That’s what I said. Are you fucking deaf or something?”

“Do you know who I am?” He bent closer to growl in her face.

“No.” She leaned forward as well, growling back in his face. “And I really don’t give a fuck who you are. Do you want something or are you wasting my time?”

“I am the prince of your kingdom and I demand respect.”

“No,” the woman shook her head, a sardonic look spreading across her face. “Our kingdom doesn’t have any princes, unless you count the assholes that the princesses are supposed to marry. And you didn’t demand my respect, you demanded my utmost attention and you’re not worth my time… which you aren’t going to get.”

“Smart, riveting and next gen.” (Pamela Wirth, CEO and author of Saving My Son)

"...a provocative science fiction novel featuring the union of two unrivaled, intelligent technologies." (Foreword-Clarion Reviews)

Dr. Keira Stetson has two passions: ethical artificial intelligence—AI with a conscience—and creating technology that improves children’s lives. Trapped in an earthquake-flattened building with a half-dozen panicked five-year-olds, she fears the worst. When billionaire Roy Brandt leverages his mysterious nanite technology to rescue them, she’s both grateful and intrigued.

Impressed by his prototype technology but alarmed at its potential for exploitation, Keira merges her company with Brandt’s. The merger gives Keira access to much-needed funds for the development of her own tech, and access to Brandt’s powerful minuscule robots. In turn, she and her AI assistant, Elly, embed Keira’s trademark Moral Operating System in Brandt’s nanite SmartDust to rein in its power.

But Brandt’s technology has been kept secret for a reason. Though he’s adamant about using the Dust to improve life, not destroy it, corporate raiders and the military have other ideas. They want to weaponize Brandt’s nanites. Suddenly, everything Keira has worked for is in jeopardy. Exposed to the worst humanity has to offer, she and Elly must fight to use this newfound tech for good and keep it out of the wrong hands…before it’s too late.

All proceeds from sales of Moral Code will go to PreventChildAbuse.org and Thorn.org.

Interview with Lois Melbourne

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

I spend my life shutting down and rejecting drama. Writing a book requires the creation of drama while continually developing obstacles for your characters. That is agonizing at times.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

I love empowered female voices. Pink!, RAYE, Meghan Trainor all give me energy.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

I have a few beta readers who are too nice, but still give me insight. I have other beta readers that pull no punches. I’m looking for a new circle of critique partners. My previous group has scattered to the winds. My husband is a straight shooter, but as I move to genres or topics out of his interest, it will be harder to tap his interest.

What book are you reading now?

“I’m Fine and Neither are You” by Camille Pagan

It really gives you a jolt regarding what we put up with in our lives and what may be healthier to confront.

How did you start your writing career?

When I sold my software company, I told myself I wouldn’t become a CEO of another business before I published the books helping kids explore careers. I’d dreamed of encouraging students with their career curiosity, so I launched a Nonprofit with that focus. I published “STEM Club Goes Exploring” and then “Kids Go To Work Day”

“Moral Code”, my first novel, started with a breakfast conversation with my husband. If we could an artificial intelligence it would be constrained ethically and the most ethical need we have is protecting kids. That discussion launched the outline of the story and my education on novel writing.

Tell us about your next release.

“Moral Code” launched last fall. I’m in the early stages of my next book. At its heart, is the power of women supporting women and the energy generated through the network effect.

About the Author

“Moral Code” is not the first collaboration for Lois and Ross Melbourne. Side-by-side, they grew their software business to a global award-winning organization, as CEO and Chief Technology Officer, respectively. Now Lois’ storytelling brings to life Ross’ deep understanding of the possibilities within artificial intelligence and robotics. Parenting and marriage have been the easy part of this equation.

Lois is now writing books, having published two children’s books about exploring careers. “Moral Code” is her first but not her last novel. Ross’ current work includes artificial intelligence and robotics.

 About the Author

Christoffel Sneijders was born in Amsterdam (1965), the Netherlands, for already more than thirty years he is focussed on business training, executive coaching, and working as a therapist with clients with severe issues in Europe, Middle East, Asia, USA and Australia.

Working with so many people in a direct way gave him the insight and how we are all the same and how we can flourish or suffer in our life. This journey and research lead him to the 3 Brains (Head, Heart and Gut) theory. This 3 Brains Theory is the simple explanation why we as humans do what we do based on how we biologically are designed with 3 Brains and what their individual job description is. Working with this concept in relationships, personal development or working with trauma’s is amazingly effective and successful.

But it was not until 2017 when a client pushed him to share this with the world and write a book about it after she had a remarkable recovery after just one session.

His passion is to contribute to world that is living with a soul and a heart, instead of following the path of selfishness and being focussed on consuming to make us feel happy. So many countries, companies and people are still living according Machiavelli’s adagium: “when you as a ruler have to choose between fear and love choose fear as people can say no to love but not to fear”

Furthermore in his passion to spread this theory he created the 3 Brains - the head, the heart and gut - coach certification training to train people to work with it. This is an ICF (International Coach Federation) accredited training.
