A tiny town. A broken tavern. And one woman searching for a place to belong.

Logan Cole is used to getting her way and what she wants more than anything is for her father to get out of jail and restore her old life in New York. All she has to do is wait for his scandals to fade and the online rancor against her family to subside. Low on cash and out of options, she takes a bus north looking for anonymity and stops in the smallest town she can find: Ramsbolt, Maine.

When she stumbles into Helen’s Tavern, she finds a place in need of a make-over and a grandmotherly woman who could use some help. Soon, she finds herself growing fond of the bar, Helen, and the town. She’s even found a friend in Grey, the local plumber. The tiny town puts her at a crossroads: keep hiding her identity to preserve her new reputation or let down her guard and reveal her true self to the people she’s grown to love. But the choice is ripped from her hands when tragedy strikes the bar and saving it requires every tool at her disposal.

Can Logan find a true home among the people of Ramsbolt Maine?

The Collected Stories of Ramsbolt is a series by Jennifer M. Lane, award-winning author Of Metal and Earth and Stick Figures from Ramsbolt. Fresh and heart-warming, the series tells the stories of a small town looking for belonging.

Excerpt

Chapter One

Logan Cole had never been on a bus in her life. As she stretched her legs and stumbled onto the sidewalk at the tip of Maine, she cursed the eight hour learning experience and swore never to do it again.

The last stop before the border was less like a terminal and more like a dead end. No benches, no depot, no ticketing window. And no taxis. Just a little yellow house with leaning porch surrounded by scruffy blueberry shrubs. At least it wasn’t sweltering out.

She yanked her black Rimowa suitcase, one of the few things the FBI let her keep, from the bottom of the bus. She gave the driver a wry smile and thanked him for the trip. It wasn’t his fault a woman coughed and crinkled candy wrappers the whole way, and that guy with his earbuds in behind her never learned to sing.

“Six hundred miles better be far enough.” She mumbled to herself as she dragged the suitcase down the sidewalk, fumbling for her phone in her purse. It was a habit she still hadn’t broken, opening apps to fill a void, but she’d deleted Twitter, Facebook, and the rest of them when the threats started pouring in. Eight months, four court cases, a thousand stories in the news, and she still hadn’t gotten used to being without social media. Being disconnected was better than scrolling through contempt, though.

“Battery’s almost dead. Map won’t load. Damn it.” She walked back the way she’d come, past quaint little houses and blueberry bushes, back to the bar she’d seen a mile or so before. It was across from a cheap motel with moldy siding and mildewed plastic chairs. The bar itself was windowless and brick. Definitely not the kind of place where someone would look for one of the wealthiest people in the country. Or someone who used to be.

She paused at an intersection and started a text to her mom, a quick note to say she was far from the gossip and rumors, safe from tabloid headlines squawking about a Cole Curse, and nowhere near the internet trolls who flooded her notifications with threats, saying they knew where to find her and what they would do to her when they did. All because of her father.

She waited among the cigarette butts and rusted beer caps while her text bounced its way to France.

Delivered. Three dots appeared. Her mother’s reply came slow.

Good luck. Lay low. I'll send money if I can. Try to blend in.

Logan sent back a smiley face and a greeting for her aunt and uncle.

Letting her phone fall back in her purse, she swallowed hard and tugged hem of her T-shirt down over her jeans. Her heart pounded so loud she wouldn’t be able to hear traffic if there’d been any. But the intersection was dead. The only other animate object in that town was the little orange hand blinking on the stop light, telling her not to walk.

The light changed and a little white man blinked, urging her to cross the street before it was too late. By the look of the town nothing was urgent. The only signs of life were two cars in the bar’s parking lot. They could be abandoned for all she knew.

A countdown timer marked off the seconds. Eleven. Ten.

Left to the motel. Straight to the bar. Neither option looked all that inviting.

For the first time since she left New York, rage, hot as the surface of the sun, boiled within her. She was supposed to be in an air conditioned office somewhere, running a foundation. Sipping a latte that came from cart. Logan kicked a beer cap into the street, and it skittered into a pothole.

Five. Four.

The little man on the pedestrian signal had his whole life together. He had purpose and goals and a job. He had an identity, and everyone knew who he was. Logan had all of that until her father screwed up, and the government charged him with money laundering and took it all away. All she had left were some comfy pants shoved in a suitcase and a cell phone plan she couldn’t afford. She squeezed the handle of her suitcase so tight her knuckles turned white.

Two. One.

The Do Not Walk signal blinked, and she crossed the street defiant.

The sidewalk rippled. Uneven slabs of concrete were mere islands, broken by the freeze and thaw of ice, lost in a sea of weeds and road dirt. She faced the bar.

When she opened that door, she would find herself in a whole new world. There would be questions. What was her name? Where did she come from? Maybe they would recognize her right away from the newspapers, the tabloids, Twitter. She wasn’t prepared for any of it, and she never would be. She didn’t even know how to fill out a job application. What was she supposed to say? I’m a Yale graduate with a degree in Art History, the daughter of a felon, and I’ve come to scrub your bathroom?

The sun would set in a few hours, and that motel did not look hospitable. The keys to a job and a cheap apartment were somewhere in that bar.

Taking in a shaky breath of Maine air, she held it in until her lungs soaked it up, then let out a steady stream of all she had left.

“Get in there and prove your mother wrong. You are still a Cole and Coles do not give up. We don’t stand on the sidewalk and talk to ourselves, either.”

Her whole future lay ahead of her. She just had to get by until her dad set it right. Shoulders back, head up, she opened

Motivation Book/Self Help

Date Published: July 1st 2020

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Author Devpal Gupta believes in living life according to those core values to which we we all have access: respect, positivity, and passion. In his debut inspirational book, Power of One, Devpal extracts lessons from his life's journey which began in Tanzania and London and transplanted him to a successful life as an Arizona-based commercial real estate executive and applies them to real-life principles. With no holds barred, Devpal tells it like it is -- he offers no excuse and takes no excuses when it comes to living a purposeful life. With eight hard-hitting, short-and-sweet chapters like "Get Over It" and "Why is the Brown Guy Better Than Us", Devpal straight shoots advice on how to remain genuine, honest and real.  Devpal also introduces his own theory, the Power of One. He imparts upon readers that in order to be truly prosperous, the only one you can rely on, is yourself.

The Power of One is a fantastically quick read and a dynamic demonstration of what it takes to be resourceful and resilient in a world that rewards people for gratuitous likes rather than the efforts and principles behind hard work.

Interview

What was your main drive to write this book?  My main drive was to present my journey and life lessons hoping to inspire people.  I wanted people to understand what being 1% really means, and why not needing validation from 99% is critical.  Our mind is our strongest muscle if it says we can, then we will, if it says we can’t then we have already admitted defeat.

What do you hope readers will learn by reading this book?  I hope that readers start living in the present, and not dwell on their past.  I hope they use negativity in their lives as fuel.  Turning a no into a yes is very satisfying.  What is 1%, how can one be 1%, and surround themselves with 1%.  These are questions that I hope get answered and inspires and motives the readers to passionately pursue their respective passions.

Did you do much research when planning this book?  Since this is really an autobiography, and a book that deals with my life experiences and what fuels me, not a lot research had to be done.  It came straight from my heart!

Did you have any main people who helped you in the process of this book or influenced you to write it?  I had a great team Parul Agarwal (my publisher), Peppur Chambers (my editor), Shannon Burton (my proof reader), Suprit Gupta (my wife, and marketing guru), My family, and my core 1% who have always stood by me through thick and thin.

How long did this book take you to write from initial thought to hitting publish? The book in its first copy was written by me in 4 days, but then editing, cover selection, publishing etc, the entire journey was approximately 6 months

Do you have plans to write more about this topic or new topics?  I hope to continue inspiring and motivating people, so I will continue writing but no plans yet on when the next one comes out.

Excerpt

On the face of it, The True Adventures of Gidon Lev is the story of an elderly Holocaust survivor—a man who made it through horrifying events and lived to tell the tale. But Gidon (pronounced “Gid-awn”) did more than survive—he thrived. Gidon’s is the story of a little boy who never truly grew up, with a desperate need to belong and to build a family for himself. Set in an uncomfortably familiar future…

We built a wall to keep the dangers of the world out...but was it actually meant to keep us in?

Your every word is monitored. Your every movement watched.

If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear.

And if you stay within the wall, the Loyalist Party will protect you.

Gideon Frome knows that safety is an illusion. Ten years ago, his perfect life was shattered, and he left Washington DC in disgrace, sentenced to serve on The Wall. He may be back, lauded as a hero, but he knows he’s only traded one prison for another, assigned a position to the infamous Secret Service.

Kate Buchanan uses her illegal predictive engine to monitor the “chatter,” flagging perceived threats to America. When the program suggests that nuclear war is imminent, and people around her start to die, Kate can no longer hide. She needs help, and it comes from the most unlikely place—Gideon Frome, a ghost from her past.

The American people thought they were safe, but it’s becoming shockingly clear that the price of safety is too high. And somehow, together, Kate and Gideon must tear down the walls that keep their country a prisoner.

Excerpt

Gideon shifted the weight from his left foot. His leg was beginning to ache, and he rubbed at his thigh. He’d taken a piece of shrapnel there five years ago, at the same time he’d gotten the scar on his face, and it still gave him problems.

How long until he could leave? Too long, at a guess.

Christ, had he actually enjoyed these events in the past? It seemed inconceivable. However, if he wanted his life back, he was going to have to suck it up and look like he belonged. Act like he belonged. And maybe if he did it long enough, he might actually feel like he belonged.

The problem was, he couldn’t bring himself to care.

The room was crowded. Anyone and everyone had clamored for an invitation to the party of the year. Plus, there were a large number of security agents. More than he remembered from the past. Men in the black uniforms of the president’s personal bodyguards—selected from the elite of the Secret Service—stood at the doors, while others mingled with the crowd. There was even a sniper on the second-floor interior balcony, covering the room.

Either Harry was paranoid, or there was an elevated threat level. If so, no one had told Gideon about it. That was hardly surprising; he suspected that no one, with maybe the exception of Harry himself, actually wanted him there.

But he wanted answers, and this was where he would find them.

Once he had those answers, then…

Who knew? Though revenge wasn’t the solution.

Most of the time he believed that.

Harry was making the rounds, shaking hands and smiling as he headed this way. Gideon wasn’t sure whether he would be acknowledged, but the president halted in front of him. He was flanked by two Secret Service officers, dressed in their black uniforms. Harry’s army, as they were known within the service.

He took the proffered hand. Harry’s grip was firm, and his smile was sparkling. Good dental work.

“Happy birthday, sir,” he said.

“Thank you. I’m glad you could make it.”

“I was grateful for the invitation, Mr. President.”

“We must all practice forgiveness.”

He could feel his muscles tightening. He’d done nothing that needed fucking forgiving. Neither had his father. For a second, he felt an echo of the dark anger that had been his companion for the first few years after his father’s death. He pushed it down and forced a smile. “Thank you, sir. I appreciated the chance to come home.”

“You’re a hero now, Gideon. You saved America from invasion. The people love you. We need heroes at a time like this.”

At a time like what? He’d seen the polls. There was a good chance that Harry would keep his position when—or maybe if—it came to an election. “Your approval ratings are higher than ever, sir.”

“Maybe,” the man mused. “But I’ve been feeling lately that they don’t appreciate me. That needs to change.”

“Yes, sir.”

“I must go now, but we’ll talk again.” Harry smiled and patted Gideon on the shoulder, and his guards stiffened at the contact. Christ, they were jumpy.

Gideon watched as the group walked away. Harry had always needed constant approval. It came from growing up in his father’s shadow; Harry Senior had been larger than life and an impossible act to follow. Charismatic. People loved him and would follow him anywhere. No doubt his son had always believed he was second-best.

Trouble was, he was right.

You cried with Hachiko. You got spooked and then laughed it off with Scooby Doo. And you fell in love with John Grogan's incorrigible Marley. But you have yet to meet a dog quite like Super Bu .

After years of arguments on the matter, the Bera family has finally decided to bring home a dog.

Ajay has wanted a dog since he was a child. He has fantasized about every version of his future life around them.
His brother, Arun, would love to get a dog as much but doesn't mind not having to clean up after one.
Ajit, their father, also wants to get a dog. He just wants to feel the love of a dog again, like he used to when he was a child.
Barnali, Ajit's wife, loathes the idea of having a dog in the house. She spent her childhood praying for only one thing, that she shouldn't get married into a family that has dogs. And until now, she got her wish.

But now, Ajay has finally worn out his mother's resilience and the Beras are bringing home a dog. Can this be just the homecoming that the dog or the family had anticipated?

Read now and find out.

Excerpt
“So, what breed is it?” Mohit, who once had a border collie of his own, was curious and waiting to start drawing parallels from his days with his own dog.

“A dachshund,” Arun replied.

“Oh, that tiny sausage-like dog?” Ajanta burst into a bout of laughter as she asked the question. None of the Beras joined in on her laughter so she let it fizzle out quickly.

“A small dog is actually better for a family that mostly stays indoors,” said Arun.

“Dachshunds can be very irritating, dumb dogs. They keep barking at everyone for no reason,” Mohit added.

“Not at all. I had a dachshund, growing up. I also had a German Shepherd. That dachshund was the most intelligent dog that I have ever seen in my life.” Ajit had been very vocal about that when he pushed Ajay to get a dachshund instead of a German Shepherd as well.

Ajay also decided to participate in the conversation, for a change. “Dachshunds are also tremendously vigilant guard dogs. And they have amazing energy.”

“Maybe, but it has almost no fur. Their skin looks like that of a mongrel on the street,” Ajanta added with twitched, judgmental eyebrows and her characteristic, sarcastic grin. Barnali chimed in as she brought out the now prepared tea and placed the tray on the table, “Actually, if you touch the coat it is extremely smooth and silky. I wish I had hair that silky!”

“Alright, alright! Your dachshund is the most pretty and most intelligent dog in the world,” the conceit in Mohit’s voice was hard to conceal, “but why are you keeping it in hiding? You don’t want us to see it?”

“She has been petrified since yesterday and has not stopped shaking since she arrived. I suppose she is yet to get acclimatized in her new environment. Perhaps also dealing with a bit of separation anxiety after being taken from her mother.” Ajit had evidently been thinking about Bu all morning.

“I’ll go and get her,” said Ajay, and headed back to his grandmother’s room once again. It was a good ten minutes before he came back holding Bu in his arms. The light was brighter in the living room and it accentuated all the ribs that her skin was barely draping.

“She looks like she is dying,” Mohit exclaimed.
