In the mid-21st Century, a top-secret consortium of corporations and governments have made time travel possible, only to realize that intruding on the past has been a terrible mistake.

At the program’s outset, a thousand scientists, engineers and support staff were confined to a subterranean complex where a corporate contributor specializing in artificial intelligence equipped apartments with Happy Home Companion software.

Time traveler Marta Hamilton had little enough tolerance for other people intruding in her life, much less a software Dear Abby, so Marta bullies her Happy Home Companion into silence.

At last convinced of the grave dangers time travel represents, government overseers suspend operations. Only the Happy Home Companions remain.

Marta and fellow traveler Marshall Grissom hope they can finally leave the past behind, but when a federal judge is murdered, they understand their vulnerability to horrible manipulations by future counterparts.

Marta and Marshall return to the Arizona desert where they confront a Happy Home Companion cult of vengeance, the outlaw Gillis Kerg, and an evangelical zealot waging a war on science.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

The hardest part is framing the concept. Once I find a concept that intrigues me, getting it down on paper comes down to imposing the discipline of a daily writing regimen.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

I enjoy all kinds of music, but having grown up in the sixties, my favorite genre is folk music and the writers and performers who emerged from that era. The Chad Mitchell Trio, John Prine, Steve Goodman, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and so on.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

I have a set of three or four editors who I have come to trust over my writing career. Their suggestions are the ones I listen to.

What book are you reading now?

I am reading a wonderful book by a new author, Shutter, by Ramona Emerson. I am also reading the new Jesse Stone novel by Mike Lupica and listening to Boone’s Lick, by Larry McMurtry.

How did you start your writing career?

I was a newspaper journalist for almost thirty years. I always wanted to write a novel, but could only sustain my efforts for maybe 5,000 words. Finally, in my 60’s imposed a writing discipline on myself of at least 500 words a day and eventually, a group of interest characters found me.

Tell us about your next release.

I see a fifth book in the Physics, Lust and Greed Series, and a novel based on a fictionalization of two of the most interesting people who have influenced my life, a professional baseball star, and a leading folk music performer.
