“My secret would plunge the world into chaos.” “How much is it worth?”

Calinthe is an asexual dragonfly-person who was sent on a mission to find two missing men. She learns one of the men is from a species thought to be extinct, who had the misfortune of being captured in a matriarchal society where all non-women are enslaved. Though she maintains a disguise with help from her companion’s illusions, Calinthe is actually intersex. If her secret were to be discovered by the matriarchy, she would be enslaved as well.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

For me, it’s the editing phase, when I go through with a fine-tooth comb to make sure everything is consistent, that plot holes are filled, and that I am satisfied with how all my characters are acting. It gets monotonous after a while, and I hate revisiting parts that I’ve already dwelt on. I crave fresh and exciting scenes, so editing is hard because it’s such a bore.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

Well, I don’t use an iPod and I don’t have any way of checking for sure which songs I’ve listened to the most, but if I had to guess, it’d probably be something by Blackmore’s Night or Loreena McKennitt, two artists I’ve listened to regularly for about fifteen years now. Their music has inspired many scenes, characters, and even entire novels in my fantasy world.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

Yes, I use numerous beta readers. I’m a bit too obstinate to use a critique partner. I know what I want in my books and don’t want someone telling me to change major aspects of it. Beta readers are sufficient to let me know what scenes need more or less, which characters aren’t engaging right, and where my prose could use work.

What book are you reading now?

I’m actually on a hiatus from reading at the moment, unless you count beta reading. Currently focusing on beta reading a dream-centric fantasy novel for a friend on Twitter.

How did you start your writing career?

I’ve been writing stories about my fantasy world since I was a kid and at some point, I figured I ought to share them with the world. The only problem was that everything I’d written up to that point was written for myself. It was not publishable. I decided to step back from my pet projects and work on something I could truly publish. I got feedback from writers on Goodreads in mid-2019 who suggested I join Twitter and connect with people in the writing community there. It was there that I met my future publisher, Shadow Spark Publishing, which I joined in August 2021. My debut novel came out in April 2022.

Tell us about your next release.

My next novel, coming out in August 2023, is Merchants of Light and Bone, which takes place in the same world and time period as MoKaM, but features a different cast of characters. MoLaB is a story about a father who lost his daughter in a freak earthquake accident. The earthquake revealed a deposit of glowing crystals, which he carves and sells as a light source. He soon questions whether the earthquake was actually an accident.
