About the Book
At first I struggled with how to write the history of Galveston that would be interesting to many different walks of life (not just history buffs), and that would be different from other history books. That is when I decided to write a historical fiction that includes ghosts, a cat, and lots of factual Galveston history. I wrote the book in the first person, a widowed woman about my age, in the form of a journal reciting the strange happenings / hauntings in her beautiful Victorian house located in the East End Historic District, the oldest neighborhood in Galveston. The protagonist has a cat that she really loves, and they play games. It was during one of these games that she inadvertently discovered a hidden secret compartment. Thus her quest begins to find out why a treasure, obviously hidden for over a century, was secretly stowed away, and who once owned the treasure, who hid it in the secret compartment and why was it hidden? She follows clues which takes her on an unforgettable journey into Galveston's grim and deadly past.
Tell me more about your journey as an author, including the writing processes.
I was surprised at myself, as well as my family and friends, that I did not know much about Galveston's history even though I had lived less than 100 miles from Galveston for most of my life. I am a very passionate person, and I get really excited about exploring the unknown and telling friends about it. When I realized that no one really knew about Galveston, I decided they and others needed to know. I have a tendency to educate people-this was a big part of the community I founded. I taught people how to navigate the health and human service agencies to find the benefits for thier disabled adult child. I started writing the book to educate others about the most incredible history of Galveston.
I am not a writer. I am a business woman, an organizer, detailed oriented, and a doer. I get things done. For the most part, if I am passionate enough about something, I believe I can accomplish just about anything. I've been called 'courageous' and 'brave' for building a community for the disabled from scratch. When I believe in something, I give it my all. Needless to say, it almost destroyed my health. I worked 16+ hours a day, seven days a week for many years. The biggest struggle was raising the funds needed to build a community, literally from the ground up. The community is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. I worked as a volunteer, took no salary, until we could afford to hire my replacement as CEO. I retired in 2017.
As I mentioned above, I am not a writer. I am however, and always was, a storyteller. I have a good memory (some say near perfect photographic memory - I got this from my mother). Sometimes, I get frustrated with others who cannot recall simple things; I guess it is easy for me - I just reach into my 'mental filing cabinets', and pull out details that astonish people when I can recall details that they have long forgotten.
