For her vision to come true, Alana must rescue Eohan’s young brother who was sold in the last port and lost somewhere in the Realms, but first, they have a war to end.

What is the hardest part
of writing your books?
I
love writing and tend to enjoy every part of the process, however, that doesn’t
mean there’s no difficult aspects of writing a book and for me that’s knowing
when to embrace
a surprise
idea and when to realize
it’s silly or a waste of pages.
I tend to struggle
with pacing since I want to create characters and settings so authentic and
tangible the reader can live through their experiences.
With The War Ender’s Apprentice specifically,
it was to have the gumption to rip apart a trunk novel. As some of my readers know I had a trunk
novel for an embarrassingly long amount of time which I LOVE called The Martlet.
I worked on this book between every single one of my other projects. Though
I loved the swash-buckling adventure story and the characters, after many
rejections, I decided to self-publish. I waited, because I knew something was
off about the structure.
Eventually, I saw how episodic the story was. Over the past six months,
I decided to break up the novel in to a series of novella-length stories.
It has been a ton of work to craft each book, but I finally feel I am glad to
tell these character’s stories.
What songs are
most played on your Ipod?
I
like a lot of different type of music, but when I am writing I like movie
scores or ambient electronica without lyrics. Some of my favorites are the
soundtrack from Legend by Tangerine
Dream and Brave Heart by James
Horner.
When
I am doing artwork, I love Deltron 3030
by Dan the Automator rapper Del the Funky
Homosapien and DJ Kid Koala.
I
only listen to current music in my car.
Do you have
critique partners or beta readers?
Yes,
I’ve found a few trustworthy hardworking critique partners. I read their stuff
and they read mine. I also hire an editor for my self-published work.

How did you start
your writing career?
I’ve
known I wanted to be an author since I was 12 years old, but my first published
book was a graphic novel series, Faminelands.
In 2008, I created it as a webcomic and self-published the paperback book before
I knew I had readers. I learned a lot about the publishing process. My debut
novel, Other Systems, was published
in 2012 by 48Fourteen.

About the Author
Much to her chagrin, Elizabeth Guizzetti discovered she was not a cyborg and growing up to be an otter would be impractical, so she began writing stories. Guizzetti currently lives in Seattle with her husband and two dogs. When not writing, she loves hiking and birdwatching.
She is the author and illustrator of independent comics: Faminelands and Lure and Out for Souls&Cookies! Her debut novel, Other Systems, was a 2015 Finalist for the Canopus Award for excellence in Interstellar Fiction. She continues to write science fiction, horror, and fantasy novels. Chronicles of the Martlet is her first novella series.
