What is the hardest part
of writing your books?
Honestly? Finding the time to actually
write them. I am a publisher as well (eSpec Books), and I do freelance editing
and typesetting. When one of those tasks isn’t demanding my time I am making
custom costume horns or homemade flavor-infused candied ginger which I sell at
the conventions where I promote my books, to help pay the bills.
What songs are most
played on your Ipod?
Don’t have an iPod, but YouTube is
usually running in the background with Celtic Instrumentals playing. The
longest track I can find is 10-hours long. On a good day I have to start it
over.
Do you have critique
partners or beta readers?
I have what I like to call an alpha
reader. Her name is Helen Fleisher, but she goes by Halla. I call her an alpha
reader because she reads and gives me feedback as I am writing. This is helpful
because I write in a non-linear fashion and she helps me keep things straight
or tells me when I have left out details when I am bouncing from scene to
scene.
What book are you
reading now?
I am editing a few anthologies right
now so that takes up all of my reading time at the moment. Those anthologies
are Realmscapes: Heroes of the Realm
(Realm Makers Media), In Harm’s Way
and Footprints in the Stars (eSpec
Books)
How did you start your
writing career?
I’ve just always written. English was
my strongest subject all through my education and creative writing and poetry
appealed to me so I used to write in my spare time. In college, most of my
electives were Literature or creative writing. When I graduated I realized I
wasn’t writing anymore because I was so used to writing for assignments and I
didn’t have that anymore. That is when I started actively pursuing writing on
my own. It was just for fun at first, but I started writing and posting an
ongoing story that people liked. One day I got an email from the site where I
posted it. The person said they were an agent and would be interested in the
book when I was done. At the time I didn’t realize I was writing a book, but
write it I did. It took me two years to finish, but they were still interested.
Better yet, it turned out that they were actually a publisher. It wasn’t a very
well known publishing house, but it got me started on this crazy journey.
Well, I just released Eternal Wanderings, a spin-off series
based on my Eternal Cycle trilogy (Yesterday’s
Dreams, Tomorrow’s Memories, Today’s Promise). The original trilogy started
out as ‘Irish Elves in New York City fighting evil demigods,’ but it eventually
ended up in Ireland and Tir na nÓg. This new series picks up literally where
the novels left off, with the main character, Kara O’Keefe (a violin prodigy,
human mage, and elfkin possessing a Sidhe soul), joining a Romani caravan to
fulfill a vow. Little does she know an ancient enemy will pursue her, putting
those she travels with at risk.
