“Gualicho takes a bite out of the ornithopod’s back as it runs away from her, causing it to stumble and fall. She jumps on top of the body and rips open its neck with her teeth. The ornithopod becomes still and limp.

Satisfied, Gualicho begins to feast. But, after only two bites, she senses something is wrong. She lifts her head and sees a Mapusaurus making its way toward her.”

Blending fiction with fact, 50 Dinosaur Tales imagines the way 50 newly described dinosaurs from the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous lived in their natural habitats.

Also included is a list of fun facts for each dinosaur story, and facts about 108 additional dinosaurs.

If you want to hear more about new dinosaurs as soon as they are discovered, listen to the weekly podcast I Know Dino.

Interview

Thanks for having me on your blog! I had a great time answering these questions.

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

For me, it’s writing the first draft. I always have a lot of ideas, but fleshing out a story can sometimes be difficult (I hate staring at that blank page)!

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

Depends on my mood. When I’m feeling nostalgic, I’ve got a 90s music playlist (includes Nirvana, No Doubt, Eminem, and a lot more). When I want to feel more energetic, I go for EDM. I also really like the bands Twenty One Pilots and Vampire Weekend.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

Both! For my latest book, 50 Dinosaur Tales, my husband and co-dinosaur podcaster Garret was my critique partner (and the one who fact-checked all my dinosaur stories). I also sent an early copy to a group of beta readers, who gave me some incredible feedback and definitely made the book better.

What book are you reading now?

I recently finished reading half a dozen books on the Bone Wars, for my dinosaur podcast’s 250th milestone episode (books included The Life of a Fossil Hunter by Charles Sternberg, The Bone Hunters by Url Lanham, and The Bonehunter’s Revenge by David Rains Wallace). Now I’m back to fiction, and about halfway through A Natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trent by Marie Brennan.

How did you start your writing career?

I’ve always loved writing. I have that typical story of writing short books in elementary school, and having a great time coming up with new ideas. Now I write about software for a tech company by day, and dinosaurs by night.

Tell us about your next release.

I have a few things in the works. One is a middle grade novel about two atoms that meet at the Big Bang and live together for a few billion years (and yes they get to hang out with dinosaurs). Another book in the works is the first in a series tentatively called Dino Wars. It’s like Game of Thrones but all the main characters are dinosaurs and it’s set in the Jurassic.
