A national health crisis is stealing your family’s sleep away, one breath at a time. In Airway is Life, Dr. Meghna Dassani, DMD gives you the information you need to spot sleep-disordered breathing and other issues so that you can get the help that you and your family need. Why are all stages of sleep important? What diagnosis might show that sleep is an underlying issue? How can you convince your doctor to prescribe a sleep study? Dr. Dassani’s interesting, accessible work will give you the tools you need to protect your family’s sleep breathing and change their lives.
What was your
main drive to write this book?
Raising
awareness about sleep apnea and helping families connect the dots is my
passion.
I've
spent years introducing my dental patients to sleep medicine, and solving their
problems through screenings, referrals, and treatments. I regularly work with
multidisciplinary teams to get my patients' airways open, so that they can get
good, high-quality rest. I see so many people struggling to get answers about
their health or knowing what questions to ask their health care providers or
even who to ask these questions.
Too
many adults and kids are under diagnosed and over medicated. Clearing the air
about sleep disordered breathing in adults and kids is the need of the day…hence
the topic and the book, a resource for everyone who might be struggling with
sleep or seeking better understanding and solutions for their families.
I am
passionate about making sure that people know about the importance of sleep. I
want to connect people to the care they need so that they can get those airways
open.
What do you
hope readers will learn by reading this book?
When
our sleep breathing isn't working right, nothing else will work either. I hope
they understand the importance of sleep and sleep breathing, and share it with
the people they love.
I hope I can help
them connect the dots and understand whether their blood pressure, weight gain,
blood sugar, or pain issues be related to how they're sleeping. I want them to
understand whether there might be a way to address the underlying issues and
possibly save their life.
If they have a child
who is showing signs of ADHD or is a bed wetter or mouth breather, my goal is
to encourage them to ask, “Could there be unresolved sleep issues?”
I truly hope they are
able to ask better questions and help their families sleep better, breathe
better.
Did you do
much research when planning this book?
Yes, a lot of
research was involved in making sure I was providing not just the right
information but also the most updated and current statistics, data and details.
Did you have
any main people who helped you in the process of this book or influenced you to
write it?
Oh absolutely!
So many! From my kids and husband to my patients to my team and my best friend,
there is no way this would have ever gotten done without their support and
inspiration.
How long did
this book take you to write from initial thought to hitting publish?
About 18
months. With the amount of research and work needed, all while being a full
time mom, wife and practicing dentist, I’d say it got done right on time.
Do you have
plans to write more about this topic or new topics?
Absolutely!
But at a much later date. Currently my focus is going to be my family…we are
going to make sure we get some much needed quality time and actually enjoy the
fact that this book is done and out to people that will actually benefit from
it.
