Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?
Usually knowing when to stop editing. I’m a firm believer in doing many edit cycles. But it’s possible to edit your book so much that you’ve polished away the soul of the story.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

Ooof! When writing I usually listen to lo-fi. But a good friend created an Arvia Dreams playlist that includes Troublemaker by Grizfolk, The Longing by Patty Gurdy, and Home We’ll Go by Walk Off the Earth, great workout music, and really captures the vibe of my work.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

Yes! Both. I participate in critique groups, and I swap betas with a variety of other authors, many who write in different genres. Aside from other SFF authors, some of my other partner specialize in everything from historical romance to PNR, to horror. There’s nothing like getting a viewpoint from outside your genre to see things in a new light.

What book are you reading now?

At the moment I’m mostly reading betas from authors I know.

How did you start your writing career?

Career? This is a career? Why am I the last to hear about these things! I started writing seriously over a decade ago, when I had an idea for a sci-fi novel. And time on a long train commute due to a long distance relationship. The relationship went better than the novel, but I kept writing, eventually finding critique groups to join which helped me immensely.

Tell us about your next release.

I really enjoyed writing Hazelhearth Hires Heroes, but with the inland location, I couldn’t justify any nautical scenes. And I LOVE nautical scenes. So to balance things out, my next release will be about the hunt for a lost pirate’s treasure! On Arvia. There’s gonna be plenty of mythic monsters in this one, including a charming, but rather disgruntled mermaid.

About the Author

DH Willison is a reader, writer, game enthusiast and developer, engineer, and history buff. He has lived around the world, absorbing history, culture, and food. Actually, he has eaten the food. It has been verified that he is a complex, multicellular life form. Fascinated by nature, technology, and history, and especially anything that can put all three of these together, he has an annoying habit of dragging his wife to the most unromantic destinations imaginable, including outdoor museums, authentic castle dungeons, the holds of tall ships, and even the tunnels of the Maginot Line.
