Fireflies at 3 am’ brings a landmark new genre to the world of literature. It’s a book with the flow of poetry but the ebb of short stories – rightfully called “Shoetry”.

This creation takes you to the roots of humanity - stripping back the veneers of life, society and interaction to see people and their ways in an entirely new light.

Interview

What was your main drive to write Fireflies at 3 am?

One day I saw my daughter spending hours and days together creating a piece of art. This inspired me to start writing. Being in advertising, I’ve written a lot for brands and clients. I thought that it was high time I started writing for myself. The pandemic lockdown presented me with ample time to write the book and I just grabbed the opportunity.

What do you hope readers will learn by reading this book?

The book is about human behavior, quirks and vanities. It also has some learnings of life. I just hope my shoetry connects the readers to their life experiences and maybe inspire them to start writing. In fact, after every title in the book, I’ve left a blank page for the readers to pen down their thoughts, learnings or their own poetry/shoetry.

Did you do much research when planning this book?

I just dug deep into my life experiences and also collected some experiences that people I know have gone through, and crafted it into shoetry.

Did you have any main people who helped you in the process of this book or influenced you to write it?

My daughter inspired me to write this book. There were a few friends who saw the potential in my random writings and egged me on to write a book. And then, there were some who had said I would never write a book. All three combined perfectly and inspired me to write a book.

How long did this book take you to write from initial thought to hitting publish?

The first 30 shoetry took me around 2 months. The next 40 took me around 7 months. All in al, it took me a good long year to write and publish this book.

Do you have plans to write more about this topic or new topics?

Yes I do! I love writing shoetry. And I hope to start writing the second edition soon.

About the Author

As a child, he was known to cook up stories to save his little ass or to pass his exams. Then he grew up a bit, only in age and size, and went to college. There, he wrote plays, won a few awards and was told to try his luck in advertising. Some kind soul, who had limited knowledge about advertising, told him that this field was all about wearing jeans to work and late-night parties. He needed no further persuasion, and without losing any more time, got into advertising.

Over the last 18 years, he worked at some of the biggest advertising agencies in the world, made some memorable ads, won international recognition for his work, and learned how to manage acid reflux. Life was OK, but he decided to complicate it by writing a book.

People nowadays avoid him like the plague lest he ask them to review his work. His children have started studying harder and his wife has taken up baking so that they can escape his nagging requests, every now and then, to read what he’s written. But all said and done, none of that has dampened his spirits. Currently, he is looking forward to selling over a million copies and is busy convincing each of his friends to buy more than 3 copies of the book. Sucker.
