Broadway’s favorite singing cat is back on the scene—and this time, she’s headed to Central Park! In Katy in Central Park, Katy is ready for a quiet day with her owner Lilian… until their picnic basket is suddenly snatched.

With her best cat buddy Weasel at her side, Katy dashes through the park’s winding paths, determined to solve the mystery. But is everything really what it seems?

This charming chapter book, written and illustrated by Ella English, is full of fun, friendship, and feline flair—plus an important lesson about thinking twice before making snap decisions.

🎉 Bonus alert!

At the end of the book, young readers can dive into a bundle of Did You Know? facts about Central Park.

Did you know Belvedere Castle is perched high above Turtle Pond and used to house a weather station? Or that Central Park Zoo is home to snow leopards, sea lions, and red pandas? There are over 280 species of birds in the park, and the entire park is 843 acres—that's about 640 football fields!

Interview

What is your favorite part of the book?
In Katy in Central Park, it has to be the zoo escape scene. Penguins chasing eachother around a fountain, snow monkeys throwing slices of pizza through the air—and right in the middle of it all is Katy, trying to keep her cool and hit her high note. It’s ridiculous, joyful chaos, and I loved writing every second of it.

Does your book have a lesson? Moral?
Yes! The message in Katy in Central Park is don’t jump to conclusions. Katy makes a few snap decisions that nearly land her in big trouble. She learns that it’s better to pause, breathe, and actually figure out what’s going on before deciding who’s on your side.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
They’re mostly imagined, but Katy is very much inspired by my real-life cat, Mouse. She’s a tuxedo diva who sings constantly and walks like she’s on a red carpet. You can meet her at instagram.com/a.tux.called.mouse. The rest of the cast—Weasel, Gerry, the pizza-hurling monkeys—they’re all my imagination running wild.

Of all the characters you have created, which is your favorite and why?
Definitely Katy. She’s dramatic, curious, and totally convinced she’s destined for fame. But I also love her best friend Weasel—he’s a scruffy, no-nonsense street cat who keeps Katy grounded (mostly). Their banter is one of my favorite things to write.

What character in your book are you least likely to get along with?
Gerry the Squirrel. He’s bossy, loud, and has no volume control. He and Katy argue constantly, and while he’s hilarious on the page, I think he’d drive me absolutely bonkers in real life.

What would the main character in your book have to say about you?
Katy would say I edit out all her best solos. She’d probably roll her eyes, demand more scenes where she saves the day and gets a tuna snack, and insist that the series be renamed The Life and Times of Katy the Magnificent.

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
Each Kitty in the City book stands on its own, but they all follow Katy’s journey across New York. Book 1 is Katy on Broadway, where she discovers her voice. Book 2 is Katy in Central Park, where things get wild and she learns that not everyone—or everything—is what it seems. They’re all connected by Katy’s big heart, big dreams, and big adventures.
