Interview

Can you tell us a little about the process of getting this book published? How did you come up with the idea and how did you start?

Adulting: The Ultimate Cheat Sheet started as a few ideas on a post-it note when I was pregnant with my first child. They were just nuggets of wisdom I meant to make note of to hand down to my daughters when they were old enough. But over the course of many years, I added to it until a definitive shape took form, and I was like, ”I need to just make this into a book. It could help people.”

What surprised you most about getting your book published?

Working with Cedar Fort Publishing and Media. I’ve wanted to publish with them for years, so when they offered me a contract it was a literal dream come true. To date, they are the best publisher I have ever worked with, hands down. Also, I was blown away by the reception the book got. It’s helped countless people and to this day, I have people emailing me or stopping me in the street telling me how it’s impacted them or a young adult in their lives. I’m deeply grateful for that.

Tell us a little about what you do when you aren’t writing

I love spending time with my family and furbabies. We like to get out to the movies, live theater, sporting events, and go hiking when the weather’s good. Family time is my happy place. I’m a bit of a homebody.

As a published author, what would you say was the most pivotal point of your writing life?

I think being knee deep in both parenthood and publishing this book, because both are very important matters. I’m a very active mom, and I knew this book was pivotal in how it could touch and help people’s lives for the better, so that was a balancing act and I would say probably the crux of my writing life.

Where do you get your best ideas and why do you think that is?

Well, I’ve lived a lot of lives over the years. I’m a Gen-Xer, so I grew up before technology took over. In addition to that, I also served six years in the Army, and many ideas come from the experiences I’ve had and the places I’ve traveled. I’ve always been a thoughtful, observant person, and as a psychology grad, I’m fascinated by how people tick and what brings two individuals together in frought circumstances. It’s the lynchpin of who we are, connection.

What is the toughest criticism given to you as an author?

I love this question, ha ha! The one negative review I’ve had which had me scratching my head was that the reader “knew everything already” and saw absolutely no point in the book. Honestly, I found that to be an oxymoron. There is always, always something to glean from everything, you just have to have a fresh pair of eyes and a positive attitude.

What has been your best accomplishment as a writer?

Adulting: The Ultimate Cheat Sheet was on Cedar Fort’s bestseller list for four straight months in 2024, and it won the League of Utah Writers’ Silver Quill Award. But overall, the best accomplishment I have is knowing I’ve helped someone, touched someone, or uplifted someone.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

I have published over 13 books in total under my name and a pseudonym, and I have at least seven books that are 60-99% completed which just need rewrites and editing before I submit them.
