More than 200,000 South Korean infants and toddlers left their motherlands in the arms of strangers from the postwar era. "Returned and Reborn: a Tale of A Korean Orphan Boy" is the first novel about such an orphan--a boy fathered by a missionary priest who established the first Catholic Adult Institute in South Korea. This fiction is based on a true story, mixed with Korea's modern history--Vietnam War in which 300,000 South Korean troops fought (5001 were killed); the unintentional harm the American military caused to the Korean people by disposing millions of gallons of toxic chemicals called "Agent Orange" in the Korean water ways and soil; and the Korean society's contempt against children of mixed blood, children born of unwed mothers, and those born with birth defects. It's the story of a young man's journey of self discovery from an aimless American with no knowledge of himself or his roots who returns to his birth country, reunite with his Korean birth mother dying from cancer caused by consuming toxic water over time, but unexpected accident separate them permanently. Yet, through her and his deceased father's former co-workers, he learns of his father's greatness as well as his weakness, as an ambitious American Jesuit who fulfilled his big dreams but caused his birth and troublesome journey as an orphan forced to leave his mother who couldn't raise him. Still, in a mysterious way, he finds his own path--the path to a mission trip to North Korea.

Against Ronan’s better judgment, they take the chamber and wake her up.

But now everything has changed. A hunter is after her and killing anyone who knows she’s alive. As they race across the expanse of space, can Ronan and Noah keep her safe? And what happens when she finally returns home to confront a life that forgot about her?

Excerpt

Ronan moved cautiously through the ship. The thick view windows had cracked upon impact, allowing dirt and rocks to tumble inside. Everything was washed out, colorless. Lifeless. He made his way through the broken, silent ship, dreading to see the cockpit and the remains of the captain. But much to his surprise, the control room stood empty.

He moved to the engine console and wiped off the inches-thick dirt, baring the powerless control panels. He sat his computer board on it and activated it. Seconds later the cockpit came to life as the wireless remote downloaded all the information available. It didn’t last long, and as soon as all the data was collected, he disconnected the console, shutting down the power surge. The small area fell silent and lifeless once again.

He activated the neural com link with Noah. “Where are you?”

“I’m next to a large clump of twisted metal.”

Ronan rolled his eyes. “Well, that narrows it down.”

“Wait,” Noah’s distracted voice told him. “I think I found what was causing the power signature.”

Ronan hesitated, but when Noah didn’t contact him after a minute he went after him, making his way carefully through the rubble into the back of the ship.

“Noah?”

“Ronan, you won’t believe this.”

“Believe what?”

He pushed into the back of the ship, which was actually in much better shape than the front, and saw him standing next to a large steel box. Through his visor Ronan could see the surprise covering the younger man’s face.

“What is it?”

Noah shook his head. “It’s a cryo chamber. And it’s occupied.”

“What?”

Ronan hurried over. The metal box, also known as a cold coffin, held a sleeping woman inside. He couldn’t see much of her because of all the tubes obscuring much of her face, but he could tell she was young, with flaming red hair—a glaring contrast to the paleness of her features.

Will a snap decision change their lives forever?

Bizarre kidnappings stun the Big Island of Hawaii, pulling Danker Donahue back into the game and forcing him to partner with Jolene Kualoha, the woman who left him seven years ago when his DNA showed up in paternity lawsuit. The prejudice-motivated hate crimes are the wildest anyone has ever seen. Victims are being poisoned then released once the ransoms are paid, many losing their lives.

In the shadow of Jolene's success as a helicopter pilot, a troubled woman develops a fixation on Jolene and imitates her appearance. Matters turn dark when the copycat is shot dead. Was Jolene the target? Threats mount when she barely survives an accident after her brake cables are severed.

When these crimes threaten her sanity, Jolene is forced to trust the one person she thought she’d lost forever, Danker. Instantly, sparks fly between them, and as much as she wants to rekindle their relationship, she must protect her heart.

An old enemy, Seamus McGinn, breaks out of a maximum-security prison and invites Danker to a meet-up. Surprisingly, the kidnapper joins forces with McGinn along with his sick fans. McGinn trumpets his ‘murders by ice pick’, and it’s up to Danker to stop him. The whole island is on edge with a live feed from the maniac’s website.

In a stolen moment, Jolene shows him hope, and he makes a snap decision that will change their lives forever. Will he make it back to show her?

 Excerpt

Chapter One

Seven years since their breakup, Jolene Kualoha spotted Danker Donahue, ambling from the parking lot toward the store. She recognized him by his height and long gait. Wind from the north ruffled his hair and brought a bone-biting chill to her heart. Nuts, here he was, ducking his head to miss the bell overhead. It tinkled, and a strange twisting sensation hit her in the stomach.

This happened at the Kalua-Kona Food Emporium on a Sunday morning in July. She stared from where she stood near the avocados. His dangerous edge drew her in, but she turned her back to him. Her body reverberated like when her cellphone was on vibrate in her pocket. Stunned with minor electric shock, she froze.  Maybe he wouldn’t see her.  Wouldn’t recognize the back of her head or the once familiar shape of her ass.

Was someone waiting for him in the parking lot? Someone like Louella, the baby’s momma who’d summoned him for an immediate DNA test? For a split second, she craned her head around but didn’t see her with him.

She and Danker were a couple when the test confirmed his fatherhood. Her heart ached at the memory. Love hurt, but that wasn’t all. Loneliness hurt. Losing someone hurt. Decision-making hurt when you force yourself to do the right thing.

She’d pulled away, giving him space to work on his previous relationship for the sake of their child. The most shameful thing a woman can do is take parents away from a baby, and this began her year of stubborn steadfastness.

I did the breakup rituals. Got the dramatic haircut. Engraved a piece of jewelry he got me with a new message. Deleted the photos that made me cry.

To have been his woman was like living where the air flowered with jasmine, and the weather day after day was flawless, but the forecast was a hurricane.

When attorney Cullen Molloy attends his fortieth high school reunion, he doesn’t expect to be defending childhood friends against charges of murder…

In a small town on the high plains of Eastern New Mexico, life and culture are shaped by the farm roads defining the 640-acre sections of land homesteaders claimed at the turn of the Twentieth Century. Cullen and Shelby Blaine explore first love along these section roads during the 1960’s, forging a life-long emotional bond.

As junior high school band nerds, Cullen and Shelby fall under the protection of football player and loner, Buddy Boyd. During their sophomore year of high school, Buddy is charged with killing a classmate and is confined to a youth correctional facility. When he returns to town facing the prospect of imprisonment as an adult, Cullen becomes Buddy’s protector.

The case haunts the three friends into adulthood, and it isn’t until their fortieth reunion, that they’re forced to revisit that horrible night. When a new killing takes place, Cullen, Shelby and Buddy find themselves reliving the nightmare.

Murder is an easy thing to hide along old country section roads.

Interview

What’s the hardest part of writing your books?
Some days everything is hard. Others, not so much. Just as readers love some parts of books more than others, writers like some parts better. The obligatory parts of a novel—like back story—can be tedious. Minor characters can be difficult to write because you just don’t care about them as much, yet you still must differentiate them from others. The part of writing I like least is final revision. I have a long list of words—the, and, in, out, up, down, to, but, that, well, just and a dozen others. I do a “find” on each one and see how many can be removed. I go through the entire manuscript for each word. By doing this, you discover how many words and phrases, particularly prepositional phrases, are superfluous. This process can easily reduce a 90,000-word manuscript by 10,000 words without sacrificing meaning or clarity.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?
Right now, 60’s folk music. My current project is a non-fiction book on The Chad Mitchell Trio and the 60’s folk music era. So that’s what I’m listening to and I love it. Other than that, a mixture of country and 60’s-70’s rock.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?
I do, but not many. Genuinely objective people can be difficult to find. I really appreciate those I do find.

What book are you reading now?
I write for Acorn Publishing, and they encourage their authors to read each other. So, I’ve just finished The Devil’s Own by K.A. Fox and my current bathtub book is Dark Paradise by Gene Desrochers, both of which I’ve enjoyed. I’m also reading Greg Isles’ most recent novel, Cemetery Road.

How did you start your writing career?
I was newspaper reporter and editor for almost thirty years and I did some magazine freelancing as well. I wanted to write a novel, but for the longest time, I thought that ability just wasn’t in my genetic code. I couldn’t sustain anything longer than a short story. After not writing at all for several years, during which time a story concept kept nagging me, eight years ago I decided I would make myself write at least 500 words every day. Just somehow get words on paper. As I did my story and characters emerged. I know many writers say that’s not the way you’re supposed to do it, but it’s the only way that worked for me.

Tell us about your next release.

In December, we will release a novel called The ConMan. This is a fictionalized version of an itinerate professional pitcher’s life in baseball. I am fortunate to know a man named Keith Comstock who pitched professionally for sixteen years, finally making the majors in his thirties. He’s a remarkable man with a remarkable story and I’m glad he trusted me with it.
