Book Blitz: Ashlight Dominion - Fear of Breath by J. Trevino Kelley #scifi #dystopian #postapocalyptic #rabtbooktours @RABTBookTours

Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction, Dystopian

Date Published: February 3, 2026

In a world where poisoned air has stolen breath itself, survival is no longer a solitary act, it is a covenant. From the ashes of collapse rises New Umoja, a fragile but unbroken community bound together by the Mesh, a living network of memory and thought. At its heart is a struggle: who gets to breathe, who belongs, and how hope endures when systems are built to suffocate. Ashlight Dominion follows those who refuse to vanish, weaving stories of resilience, betrayal, and rebirth into a tapestry of survival. This debut novel by J. Trevino Kelley is both mythic and immediate, exploring how history, power, and identity shape the fight to endure and remain true. With prose that burns and breathes, it asks: What does it mean to rise from ash, not untouched, but unbroken?

About the Author

 J. Trevino Kelley is a writer and strategist with a lifelong interest in systems, power, and human behavior. A husband and father of four, raised by a single mother as one of seven children, he draws from lived experience, leadership work, and a deep curiosity about how societies respond to disruption. His speculative fiction explores survival, identity, and the consequences of rebuilding the world after collapse. Ashlight Dominion is his debut novel.

Ky’s head felt as if it was going to burst. It throbbed in time with the beating of a drum that seemed to be not two inches from his ears. This wasn’t his only torment. His wrists and ankles were cruelly knotted with thin twine that cut deep into his inflamed flesh. When he struggled, a wave of nausea overturned his consciousness. He dry-retched, which sent fresh stabs of lightning through his tortured brain.

He forced open his blood-encrusted eyes. The bizarre scene caused a moment of confused alarm. Everything was upside down. The pain emanating from his ankles was explained; he was hanging by his feet. He reasoned, after a few moments, that he was inside a vast tent, and against the walls the flaring torches cast dancing shadows of a parade of exotic animals and bizarre circus performers. Ky caught sight of Pustule, the ridiculously named two-headed dwarf. The cunning oddity was the loyal creature of Boss, the carnival’s owner. Laughter erupted from the audience who sat at long tables, amply supplied with wine bottles and ale mugs. Ky licked his dry lips.

What is this place? In brief disordered snatches he recalled his and Rowan’s attempted escape from the caravan, the fight with the bearded man, the taking of Rowan, the boss’s betrayal, and the arrival of the Skolls, the vicious marauders of the wastelands. He recalled that instead of just taking him, the Skolls had captured the whole caravan. After that the numerous beatings, too many to count, blended into one continuous thread of pain.

Nausea again threatened to take him out of his pain when a bucket of foul wastewater from the cook tent was emptied in his face. He coughed and spluttered as the stale liquid filled his nostrils.

Before him, only a few yards away, flanked by guards armed with spears, a naked gargantuan occupied an ivory throne. The big man pushed away the thin whore who’d been curled in his lap sucking his engorged prick. She slid to the floor gasping. Ky experienced a pang of recognition, but in his confused state he couldn’t put a name to her. Released from her immediate duty, she crawled away into the shadows.

The giant gave a hand signal, and the drumbeats ceased, as did the chattering of the assembled guests.

“He lives, does he?” he asked a thin, rat-faced man who stood by Ky.

“As you ordered, Captain,” the man replied.

Ky cursed the fiend who obviously revelled in inflicting pain with skills designed to take a living body to the brink of death and coax it back again.

“He hangs by his feet so as not to drown in his own blood.”

“Call me Lord Thorfin!”

“Lord Thorfin,” the man hastily corrected himself.

That some sort of promotion had occurred mattered little to Ky. It was the name that stabbed him in the heart.

Thorfin!

He hadn’t recognized the warlord from his dizzying position. He doubted he would have known him under normal circumstances. Thorfin had grown prodigiously fat during the dozen years that had passed since Ky had been on the losing side in the War of the Three Sovereigns. Filled with rage and grief, he’d stood with his father and brother while Thorfin personally walked among the ranks of prisoners choosing those who’d be sacrificed to Po. Ky had stared defiantly into the eyes of Thorfin, who laughed and chose his older brother, Sandor. Ky had rushed forward only to be beaten to the ground, his head held up by the hair so he could watch Sandor dragged to the crude block to have his body ripped asunder.

Ky had screamed every curse known to man till his voice failed. In the cells he’d watched helplessly as his father died of grief. Then, after a month-long trek, he’d been returned to Slavin Hold and pressed into service as a guard. At Slavin he’d started every day by swearing bloody revenge, an impotent gesture, as it turned out. Now the tyrant had him trussed up like a beast ready for slaughter.

Ky forced his mind to rise above his pain to concentrate on Thorfin’s words.

“I am bored with this,” Thorfin said. “Will he talk, Greeg?”

The torturer slapped Ky’s arse. “If he knows what’s good for him he will.”

“Then put him to the question.”

What question?

Greeg extracted an iron poker from the fire and waved it so close to Ky’s eyes it felt as if his tears would boil. “Where is the girl?”

Of course. This was about Rowan!

Rowan, the rebellious slave who he loved. Ky spat a wad of blood from his mouth. If he told Thorfin that Rowan had been taken by the bearded man, he might know who that mysterious fellow was and go after her. Did he really want Thorfin to get his hands on her? Even if he lived beyond this day, could he protect her?

Then, in a moment of clarity he realized that Boss, the corpulent owner of the carnival who had handed him over, would have already told Thorfin everything. There was no reason not to speak what he knew.

“The man with the beard,” he said his words barely audible.

Greeg struck him with an open hand. “Speak up!”

Ky repeated his answer.

“Yes, yes,” Thorfin said irritably. “I know of him. Who is he?”

“I don’t know. He never said his name.”

“No one in the town knew him either,” Greeg confirmed. “I asked them most pointedly.”

“You haven’t killed them all, have you?” Thorfin demanded.

Greeg chuckled. “Not yet, but they wish for it.”

“They must know something. There are more clues to a man’s identity than just his beard.” Though a beast in human form, and despite consuming a vast amount of wine, Ky knew Thorfin was not without intelligence.

“I will persist in my questioning, my Lord Thorfin.”

“I want answers.” Thorfin returned his gaze to Ky. “She means something to you, this slave, Rowan.”

Date Published: August 29, 2023

We are the fortress, and the fortress is us.

Sim was a teacher in his old life. Now he's the savior of orphans.

He isn't their father. God knows he has already failed in that role. But he is their guide. And the kids? They are his penance. His redemption.

For three years Sim has prepared his orphans for the hard realities of life after the plague that wiped out most of the global population. Theirs is a life without laws or creature comforts. He has trained them to forage and grow their own food, to be vigilant, and to protect themselves and each other by any means necessary. In building a fortress of brick and mortar, they've become a fortress of flesh and blood.

These allegiances and ideals are put to the test when a man named Zagan, who believes himself to be on a mission for the devil to bring about the destruction of civilization's remains, gathers hundreds of marauders and confronts Sim and his orphans in a merciless siege.

Will the fortress hold... Or will it collapse under the pressure of evil?

This is not a save-the-world story.

In a fading world on the brink of its end, Sunmine stands besieged by the Jungle of Rot. Tensions simmer between the Woodfolk and the Sun Empire Citizens, trapped together in these shrinking lands.

Amidst this turmoil, a figure stands out: Anpô, the sole outsider to ever come from beyond the Rot and survive. He arrived a mere baby in his mother's arms, an ominous bloodred tattoo marking his chest — but her death came fast, robbing Anpô and the city of any answers she might have held.

Is Anpô to be the doom of Sunmine, as so many claim? A cursed Rotspawn, touched from birth by the Black Rot that devours the world? Or could the whirls of ink on his chest hide the answers they seek?

Seeking acceptance, Anpô chases the sacred Art of Burning, his true nature becoming entwined with the hopes and hatred of Sunmine's inhabitants as the forces of this decaying world converge around him. Will he carve himself a place in these lands that are not his, unlocking the secrets shrouding his past? Or will he crumble under the weight of their fear and mistrust, unleashing whichever dark destiny might lurk within him?

About the Author

Like Shakespeare and Hemmingway, I am an eclectic writer. My stories develop from my imagination and passions, usually just before I fall asleep. Before I became an Indie author, I had two novels published by a respected independent publisher, which went out of business. Since books cannot be removed from Amazon, A Sinister Obsession is now Dead Can’t Haunt You, and Stardust Dreams will soon be Forrester’s Folly. During my clinical careers as a School Psychologist and Clinical Social Worker in private practice, I had a book on human nature published by a traditional publisher and when the editor passed away, it vanished. That book will be updated and launched next year. Happily, I am now an Indie author with the same quality of work but now under my control. My genres have been horror, suspense/thriller, senior romance, sci/fi, and now apocalyptic, which is based on my worries about the precarious future of cyberspace. Besides writing, I am an avid golfer, bowler, and tennis player. I reside in Florida with my lovely wife and Mickey, our handsome Shih Tzu.

Excerpt

I’ve seen many people die. Friends, family. My husband. Tried to help them, but … it was painful not being able to ease their suffering. And when you’re hungry, well, scavenging isn’t just for rodents.”

“Good point,” he grunted as he stood up. “I have to take a leak if you want to point me to the bathroom.”

“Oh, um, sure,” she mumbled, embarrassed.

She helped him off the bed, keenly aware that he stood naked. He glanced down at himself.

“Got something for me to put on?”

“Oh, yes,” she squeaked, then cleared her throat. “In the bedroom is a closet full of men’s clothes.”

He nodded and, holding his bandaged side, headed off to the bathroom. She couldn’t help but watch as he slowly walked away. Much to her shock, he didn’t close the door and a moment later, she heard him urinating. Her inner voice told her to stop looking, but she couldn’t seem to take her gaze off his muscular behind, as well as the tattoos on his back. So many colors and designs, and she had to admit, he fascinated her in a very improper way.

Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes to break her fascination. She had to keep reminding herself who she was and who he was, and that he wasn’t going to be around for very long.

“You okay?”

His question jolted her and she opened her eyes to have his muscular chest up close and personal. Her heartrate skyrocketed. As her gaze traveled upward, tracing over every inch of tattooed skin, she determined there was something very interesting about Jesse Krider. Something that made her skin prickle with awareness and her tummy do a funny little flip-flop.

“I found some sweatpants to wear,” he said.

She swallowed thickly, not daring to look down, even though she very much wanted to do that. A shred of propriety still lingered in her conscience.

“That’s, um, fine.”

He took a step closer. On one hand that relieved her of the pressure urging her to look down. However, it now brought him close enough that she could reach out and touch his skin if she was so inclined. And she was fast learning that she felt so inclined to do this that she had to curl her fingers into a fist to prevent them from having a mind of their own.

About the Author

I began reading my mom’s Harlequin Presents in the fifth grade, and from the first story I knew I wanted to write romance novels. I like writing about the very ordinary girl thrust into extraordinary circumstances, so my heroines will probably never be lawyers, doctors or corporate highrollers. I try to write characters who aren't cookie cutters and push myself to write complicated situations that I have no idea how to resolve, forcing me to think outside the box. I love writing characters who are real, complex and full of flaws, heroes and heroines who find redemption through love.

Virtual Book Tour: The Aria of Galvanize by @wilder_page #blogtour #interview #giveaway #scifi #dystopian #rabtbooktours @RABTBookTours

Post-Apocalyptic / Sci-Fi / Dystopian
Date Published: July 3, 2020

Incarnate Number Seven, a cybernetically enhanced young woman with no memories and only a basic operating system, awakens to a devastated world painted in blood, desperation, and genocide. Guided only by a moody artificial intelligence program and scattered digital memories into the past, Seven must traverse the perilous Gateway region, fighting past its savage inhabitants and monsters to learn who she was and what happened to her world. Maybe, if she’s lucky, she’ll even save what’s left of humanity in the process…

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

The Aria of Galvanize is my debut novel, although I am nearing completion on the next sequel in the series. I find the hardest part of writing the series to be trying to ensuring that the big picture of the novels is going the direction I want while keeping the small moment-to-moment action and details immersive and engaging! If I focus too much on the big picture narrative it’s easy for a specific subplot to drag on or lose focus, but if I focus too much on a specific subplot it’s easy to lose the integration of the entire story! I’ve gotten better at this since I first started writing, and I work very hard to ensure that every word is necessary to the story and that in the end all of these subplots and challenges will all come together!

What songs are most played on your Ipod?
The songs I listen to most while writing tend to be a mix of pop and EDM (electronic dance music). I feel like the fast beats and rhythm of this music really helps me keep a fast pace and plenty of action in the stories I write. Some of my favorite songs have been “Colours” by Emma Hewitt, “My Good Place” by Aurosonic, “My Enemy” by Super8 & Tab, and “U” by Garath Emery & Bo Bruce.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?
The bulk of the feedback I received on my work has been from my sister and my wife, who were both generous with their time to read through my crazy ideas! They’re both excellent at spotting grammatical problems and shoddy text. I’m especially grateful to my wife, who I run many of my ideas past to make sure they are logical, believable, and scientifically possible. Unfortunately I didn’t have any beta readers for The Aria of Galvanize, but I hope to have some for the upcoming sequel “The Aria of Galvanize: Destiny.”

What book are you reading now?
I’m currently in the process of reading “Blood Red Road” by Moira Young, another post-apocalyptic novel published a few years ago that follows a young woman trying to survive in a future desert wasteland. It’s a lot of fun so far with good concepts and an interesting writing style that hints at the diminution of the English language after societal collapse, very imaginative!

How did you start your writing career?
The Aria of Galvanize is my debut novel, so I suppose this is the start to my writing career! But I’ve been writing since middle school when my friends and I used to write and share stories at school. I’ve also written and published in a lot of non-fiction outlets, but I’ve always wanted to create an exciting and epic fiction story. Hopefully readers will feel that way when they read Aria too!

The next book that I’m in the final stages of working on is the sequel to The Aria of Galvanize, titled “The Aria of Galvanize: Destiny.” The sequel will continue to follow Seven and her friends as they fight to survive in a series of post-apocalyptic war games, sort of gladiator style. I am in the editing stage of the novel and expect to make it available in early 2021 to advance readers. I am also working on a spin off prequel novel following one of the characters from the book, Sorena, in her youth experiences as a Hired Gun mercenary trying to survive in the brutal Gateway. I hope to have this briefer novel, Berserk: Before Galvanize, available by the end of the year. Readers can keep up to date with progress and upcoming releases on my website, www.wilderpage.com!

About the Author
Wilder Page loves science fiction, cyberpunk, dystopian, and post-apocalyptic worlds. Especially those with stories where the personal stakes are high, and the costs of failure are very real. But he also believes in the triumph of the human spirit, and whether the future will be grim or bright, well… that’s a choice each of us has to make for ourselves. When Wilder’s not writing or daydreaming he spends the rest of his time running, traveling with his wife and best friend, or playing video games with his two amazing little kiddos!

Anyone wishing to live must harden and adapt to the new rules of a world post-fall of polite. This dangerous new world will make you into a survivor… or a corpse.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?
With this particular project, the largest challenge was deciding on the point of view and structure for the novel. I must have written the opening of The Fall of Polite a half dozen times before finally cracking it. Now it’s impossible to imagine the story being told any other way.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

I make soundtracks for most of my projects that I listen to while writing. The Fall of Polite’s soundtrack consisted mainly of music from Gustavo Santaolalla, Tom Waits, Nick Cave & Warren Ellis, and oddly enough Dave Porter’s OTS from Breaking Bad. Weirdly fitting for the post-apocalypse.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

Getting good feedback is extremely important. With screenplays, I have a group of other writers who I share my work with. When it comes to prose, I share my writing with a small circle whose feedback I trust will be honest.

What book are you reading now?

I’m currently reading And the Ass Saw the Angel by Nick Cave. Before that, I had just finished up Wraiths of the Broken Land by S. Craig Zahler, and up next on my shelf is probably Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian, or I might jump into the next volume of Clive Barker’s Books of Blood.

How did you start your writing career?

I started out as a screenwriter for film and television for a number of years before making the leap into prose. Now I continue to practice both writing disciplines and I find that my experience in each form enhances my writing in the other. My prose has a cinematic flair that most readers greatly enjoy.

The Fall of Polite is my debut novel and my largest project to date. I have a couple of novel projects in the works alongside a couple of in-progress screenplays and a whole bunch of finished screenplays ready to be shot. I’m always releasing video essays and other short-form video content online and anyone interested in that sort of thing can follow along at youtube.com/brickwallpictures
