First Love is Overrated

This summer these two broken souls discover if your second love can make you forget your first

Growing up, the Morelli brothers were close

Their kinship sinks deeper than the Titanic the summer they both fall for the same girl. Zakiah always felt Iliana Kaplan's heart belonged to him. All along, it has been their story, until fate removed the blindfold.

Everything falls apart when Zakiah realizes Iliana will never give him her whole heart. This time, the middle brother, Elijah, won't be able to repair the damage. A rift is torn amid all of them, and nothing will ever be the same again.

Two years later, when love comes knocking on his door, Zakiah strays from his motto. He can't pretend the connection he feels with Glory Glover isn't real. He just can't afford to fall victim to love again—already learned that lesson the hard way.

Life drops the other shoe. When his dad reveals who his betrothed is, there's no running from what fate has in store. Can your second love make you forget your first? Zakiah must decide if love only exists in fairytales. No matter what choice he makes, it won't be easy to find what's truly his to behold.

What happened in the spring might've made him forget his summertime dreams, but reality rarely has a silver lining.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

The hardiest part of writing for me is actually finding enough time to write with also having a fulltime job. Always working on different stories at the same time, I don’t really get writer’s block. I just wish I had more time to write all the thoughts in my head.

What are your most played songs?

Honestly, it depends on what I’m into at that time. Right now, it’s Daylight by Taylor Swift because it’s the theme song for the new season of The Summer I Turned Pretty teaser trailer.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

I use websites like Onlinebookclub for Beta readers.

What book are you reading now?

The Summer We Turned Dead by Kat Mayor. It’s a great spin-of parody.

How did you start your writing career?

I’ve always loved writing since I was younger. I was actually able to self-publish my first book in 2013 through Amazon.

Tell us about your next release.

My next release, Summer Fated To Be Mine is a YA, Coming of Age, brother love triangle. One of the themes is summertime. The main theme is that your second love can make you forget your first. I wanted to focus on 2nd chance love, because a lot of times in real life, your first love is not your soulmate.

"Dear Diary, On September 3, 1982, two things happened that I'll never forget: I acquired an older sister, and I fell in real love. But tell me, what does an eight-year-old know about love?"

For nearly a decade, Hosea Felix and Gomer Williams were inseparable. She loved him from the moment she laid eyes on him. Their friendship was iron-clad until temptation rocked Gomer to her core. Somewhere along the way, she fell for another guy and traded young love for instant pleasure. Not only is Jeri Cole fine—he is a bonafide gangsta, unattainable, and off-limits. Jeri was all Gomer could think about, and the only thing she thought she wanted. Despite her big sister already laying claim to him, not much could stop Gomer from clawing at the possibility of love and diva status. Getting with Jeri felt right...but at what cost?

Gomer never backed down. She is the original bad girl—ratchet, bougie, and insatiable. Feel like you wanna dislike her? Well, get in line.

They Call me Gomer… JC Miller's sophomore spin-off novel enthralls readers with a deeply woven, emotionally heart-tugging take on the Book of Hosea. By examining rape culture, drug addiction, family secrets, and the vulnerabilities of young Black girls in pursuit of fortune and fame, this contemporary tale gives those in search of a good dra-mance all the feelings!

She will chase after her lovers but not catch them; she will look for them but not find them. Then she will say, "I will go back to my husband as at first, for then I was better off than now. Hosea 2:7

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

The hardest part of writing for me is getting started. I procrastinate out of fear of not having anything to say and worrying about if what I do say is good enough. I put off writing as long as possible. For me, it’s a mind game. As many writers do, I guess composing outlines would help with the anxiety, but I write by the seat of my pants with an initial idea in mind. When I build up the courage and inspiration to sit down and begin a manuscript, that’s when the magic starts. My stories take on a life of their own. Telling myself to relax and enjoy the process allows my spirit to transfer my thoughts.

What songs are most played on your iPod?

I write to music. Music has the same type of effect as books. Through the mind’s eyes, they both create escapes from reality. My titles take place in the 80s and 90s era, South Bronx, and the songs that I listen to reflect that time. If there were a theme song for my latest title, it would be--Street Life, by Randy Crawford.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

Absolutely! My business partner and friend, M.R. Spain, is always the first person I call on when completing a manuscript. She is an honest critiquer, but I feel our taste in books is similar, so I seek out the neutral impressions of beta readers.

What book are you reading now?

When I am writing or promoting my work, I barely have time to read. I have recently found time during daily exercise to dive into the "God Don't Like Ugly series" by Mary Monroe.

How did you start your writing career?

During a dark time in my life, while caring for my ailing mother, I started writing again to help cope. When she passed on in 2017, I realized I had written a three-part series. My friend, M.R. Spain, and I had been messing around with the notion of publishing our books. We seized the opportunity, started Jess, Mo’ Books LLC, and published the series under our own company.

Tell us about your next release.

Currently, I am working on a modernized spin on the story of Mary Magdalene. Sex worker, saint, sinner, witness, wife, and entrepreneur, Magdalene had an extraordinary life. She also suffered from mental health issues, which I would like to explore in the upcoming novel--the stigma attached to mental illness and why women suffer in silence.
