First they came for his sister’s eye. Now they’re coming for his. And what’s even worse is he deserves it.

Henry has never had anything good happen to him, period. Full stop. That’s why, after school, he’s going to put on his big-boy pants and confess his love to his best friend—because the universe owes him one, dammit, and he needs a win.

But maybe doing it on Drill Day wasn't the best idea—the one day a month that healthcare conglomerate Axiom infiltrates schools across America to select a new candidate to give up one of their eyes, for... research? And if this Drill Day is anything like the last, Henry will never get a chance at a good life. Especially if his past keeps threatening to eat him alive, and especially if his old ways of keeping the darkness at bay refuse to work anymore.

INTERVIEW

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

The hardest part is figuring out what works and what doesn’t. There are loads of good ideas that make it into a first draft, and weeding things out is difficult because you don’t want to mess up your book baby. That’s why giving yourself a lot of distance away from the manuscript afterwards is so important—several weeks, at least; otherwise, you won’t have a good objective eye to read things fresh. That’s also why beta readers are so imperative, because they’re not as close to those ideas as you are.

What are your most played songs?

Recently it’s been the entirety of Beyonce’s new Cowboy Carter album! It’s incredible from front to back.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

Yes! A good friend and my husband served as beta readers for this book. They got me through a lot of tough plot holes!

What book are you reading now?

The First to Die at the End by Adam Silvera. It’s got me all in my feels.

How did you start your writing career?

I received my bachelor’s in fiction writing from Columbia College, where I learned the skills and techniques to building a strong story.

Tell us about your next release.

I’m hard at work on the second installment to The Cyclopes’ Eye series, and in the meantime, I’ve got lots of poems and short stories published, linked on my website, jeffreyhaskey-valerius.com.

About the Author

Jeffrey Haskey-Valerius works in healthcare by day and writes weird fiction and poetry by night. His shorter work has been featured in numerous literary journals and has been nominated for prizes, including Best of the Net. He currently lives in the Midwest with his unbelievably handsome and perfect dog, and also a human whom he loves. The Cyclopes’ Eye is his debut novel.

YA Sci-Fi/Dystopian

Date Published: 01-01-2024

Plug your ears.  And whatever you do, don't look.  The war for humanity has begun.

Cameron “Jet” Shipley was there when they arrived in 2026. He, and everyone else, lived through the next decade and a half, learning to hide. Learning to never make a sound. Learning the most important rule of all:

You just..don’t…look.

The year is now 2042, and humanity is eking out an existence in the shadows.

Cameron and his team are sent out on a recon mission in Clarksville Tennessee, with events and developments that may alter the trajectory of Earth’s fate… and his own.

Joined by newcomers Bassett and Trudy, Cameron and his brother Rut will have to contend with a powerful force that has laid waste to the planet and annihilated over eighty-five percent of Earth’s civilization.

Will Jet’s expeditions lead him on a slippery slope of discovery that demands accountability and answers?

Or will it plunge the earth, and everything in it, into further dissonance?

“Aliens” meets “A Quiet Place” in this dystopian sci-fi thriller series.

INTERVIEW

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

Probably the fact that I need to keep details straight and not leave any gaping plot holes. Granted, the editing process is going to be extensive, but I just hate for something to be missed and then for a reader to catch it. Also, achieving verisimilitude. I totally enjoy the research to attain that for whatever I’m writing…but it does take some deep dives to get what I need, and want to make sure everything checks out.

What are your most played songs?

If you mean while I’m writing, oh man, then it’s movie soundtracks! I play those all day long and they fuel my creativity greatly. It can be Star Wars one minute, and then Pirates of the Caribbean the next, the Empire of the Sun, then Beetlejuice…then Return of the King. I love the pure unpredictability of it, and it conjures up imagery in my mind while I listen to them in the background, which helps whisk me away to fantasy or sci-fi and get me engaged.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

I sure do, and I find them indispensable! They really help me think of angles that I might not have known to explore earlier.

What book are you reading now?

The Resistance Trilogy by K.A. Riley, specifically the first one “Recruitment.” Pretty good so far! Not so Hunger-Games-copycat as some of the other dystopian ones I’ve read. This one is unique, compelling, good dialogue, tension, and intrigue.

How did you start your writing career?

Accidentally. I stumbled into writing a fictional novel in the early 90’s that I subsequently abandoned as I wasn’t sure that I wanted to pursue writing as a career at the time. But it always stayed in the back of my mind and I wanted to continue writing someday.

Tell us about your next release.

Well, Dissonance Volume I: Reality published 1.1.24, and Dissonance Volume 2: Reckoning, the second in the trilogy, should publish before the end of March! So I’m very excited and things are ramping up around here. Truly stoked for where the series is going, and grateful that it has become so much larger than I could have ever anticipated. It's grown monstrously (see what I did there? It’s an alien invasion sci-fi series) and I’m so proud of what it’s become.

"What other power was there?"

"Oh, more than you could ever know."

Review
I really enjoyed this!
Bertrand Coruscare paints a vivid illustration of his world using a voice that appeals to younger readers.
His characters are believable and the action is paced so that I don't want to put the book down once started.

About the Author

Bertrand Coruscare's first novel, Rising Darkness, is the beginning of the epic "The Torch series." Lover of the mysterious, the heroic, and the refined, he fills his days with dark stories, warm drinks, and a touch of sarcasm.

Excerpt

I hate attention. I hate causing a scene. I hate being noticed. And I’m very, very aware that, right now, that is exactly what’s happening. I’m also noticing how sweaty I am. My face is either ghost white or bile green. Or beet red. All three?

A part of me knows they can’t be looking at me any worse than they usually do, though. Poor Henry with his one-eyed sister. Poor Henry with his drunk of a dad. Poor Henry with his convict of a mother.

I think about reaching down to my thigh to catapult me out of this moment, the tangle of cuts and scars I could squeeze and knead like dough so the jolt of hurt would replace this ache of embarrassment. But I can’t. Not here.

We take the third speed bump slower than the last two, but I still feel touch-and-go. At this point, the best option is to just get out of here as fast as I can. Since I’m already standing when we pull into the parking spot, I don’t wait for all the people in front of me to get off first. I march right on up to the front like I own this bus. And you know what? For right now, I do, fuckers.

“You in a hurry or something?” asks the driver. He removes his shades to reveal two very intact and very brown eyes. His fist is wrapped around the lever to open the door, but he’s not opening it.

I wasn’t expecting this, and with each second, my blood feels thicker and thicker, like sludge. I mumble something about a test I have to study for.

“One day you’ll realize life’s about more than school,” he says, believing, I’m sure, that he’s being very profound at six-thirty.

I just nod and smile, hoping my face doesn’t betray my anguish.

He smirks and finally pulls the lever, and the door squeaks and sighs as it opens. I jump down the stairs, and I must go a little too fast because there’s no way I can hold it in anymore. I’ve got to puke, and I’ve got to puke now.

I race around to the front of the bus, shielded on all sides by other buses that I really hope are empty, and let it go.

It’s so painful coming up, like someone is stabbing me. My eyes flutter open and closed as it comes pouring out, and it’s like I’m watching myself in stop motion. It forms puddles around my feet. Some of it gets on my shoes.

It’s hot and gross, and some of it sprays up into my nose, which might make me puke more. I try to be quiet so nobody will hear me, but the bus engine is so loud that it probably doesn’t matter. Or maybe that’s delirious thinking. Maybe the driver is watching from his window right now. But if anybody does come over to see, they don’t wait around long enough to say anything.

A minute later, when I’m sure it’s all out of me, I feel light, free. Empty. I think this might be the best I’ve ever felt in my life. Maybe I can read this poem today. Maybe Sam will respond the way I want. I should puke more often.

Everything in me goes still and quiet. It’s almost like I’m floating through fog as I wind my way through the maze of buses all parked in a cluster. I’m so light, it feels like a dream. Like I’m not real. Is this what it’s like to get high?

As soon as I round the last bus, I come down.

If getting sick was a dream, reality is not worth waking up for. The nightmare of my life is as bleak as it’s ever been.

Ah, yes, here we are. Drill Day.

Across the parking lot, a few hundred feet away, is the entire student body—two thousand of my peers. They’ve been rounded up like cattle in front of school, their incessant chatter like primal, god-fearing cries for help before being led to slaughter. And just like real cattle, they know there’s no escape.

But at least the cows get to die before their mutilation

Discovering who you are can be dangerous - even deadly.

Twyla's been living in hiding on Earth, hoping to leave her past behind. But when her mother, Madam Cassiopeia DeConnett finds her and kidnaps her back to the Paraxous Star Cluster, she expects her daughter to take her rightful place within the family business. The DeConnetts are Dashia- a group of genetically- engineered telepaths who use their powers to control some and ruin others. Their criminal organization is rich, powerful, and spans The Cluster.

When escape seems impossible, Twyla considers suicide. Then she meets Dovain, another prisoner, and their friendship blossoms into something more. Together, can they figure out how to free themselves? Can she trust herself enough to risk loving him? If she does, will that love save her, or lead to her destruction?

Interview

Tell us about your book?- Escaping the Dashia is a YA (young adult) science fiction set in the Paraxous Star Cluster. Twyla was hiding on Earth, when her mother, Madam DeConnett, finds her and kidnaps Twyla back to the Paraxous. Her mother expects her to take her rightful place within in the family business. The DeConnetts are Dashia—think psychic vampires. So, Twyla must outwit her mother and escape before she’s forced to become one of them.

What is the PRIMARY benefit, above all others, that your potential reader will gain from reading this book? (Be very specific. Please do not answer with 'good read' or 'page turner' or some other worn-out, overused phrase. Be concise and avoid generalization.)- For the price of a book, the reader gets to travel to a star cluster far, far away with fun characters of a variety of races. It is pure escapism. (pun intended) At the same time, you get to root for Twyla as she takes on a corrupt system and says and does the things you only wish you could.

If you had to compare this book to any other book out there, which book would it be?

(Remember: The audience does not yet know you. It is very important that you reference something they might be familiar with to effectively and powerfully communicate what your work is about. You are NOT saying you are 'better than' or 'just like' this comparative, but are somewhat the same in a very general sense, to give the listener a point of reference.) - My pitch line was James Patterson’s Maximum Ride set in a Star Wars style universe.

Hundreds of thousands of books come out every year. Why should someone buy THIS book? (What is it that sets THIS book apart from ALL those other books in the same genre or category? What will the buyer get from you and ONLY you that simply cannot be found elsewhere?) - I wrote the first draft when I was fifteen and I have worked hard to retain the authentic voice of that age. But I’ve had decades to develop the races and worlds that make up the Paraxous Star Cluster. I think readers will appreciate the rich and immersive worlds.

Who is your target audience? (Be very specific. Gender? Age range? Geographic area? Primary interests? What benefits does the reader hope to gain from buying a book like this book?) - Teenage girls are the primary audience. However, women over forty make up 40% of the YA science fiction and fantasy market for books with a strong female protagonist. One of the major themes of Escaping the Dashia is staying true to yourself despite pressure to conform. I think with the media and peers always telling women what they should look like, dress like, and think like, young women, and woman of all ages, need a reminder that it is absolutely okay to be yourself and stand your ground.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? - Yes. I actually wrote a first draft of this novel when I was the age of the protagonist, 15. As a Jehovah’s Witness and a science fiction geek, I was a social misfit. I took that feeling of not belonging and intensified it for Twyla by making her belong to an illegal, genetically hybrid race. Then I let her say and do the things I wouldn’t dare say or do in real life.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since publishing your work? - Reading the reviews. I never thought I would be so obsessed with reviews, but it means so much to me to have a project I spent decades on be so well received. The most exciting part is that reviewer often mention how much they are looking forward to book two. That is great motivation for me to get the final draft done.

How would you describe your writing style? - Immersive. When I am writing a Paraxous novel, I am Twyla looking back on her life, loves, and losses. It is a grownup’s version of play to me. I let Twyla tell her story. Then I move to a different location (physically and mentally) and become the editor to make the prose smoother and clean up organizational issues that come from writing stream of consciousness.

Are your characters pure fiction, or did you draw from people you know? - Twyla is the person I wanted to be at 15 with all the consequences that go with being so stubborn and feisty. The other characters are an amalgamation of my high school friends and my favorite science fiction characters.

Are you more of a character artist or a plot-driven writer? - I am a character driven writer. I have lived with these characters in my head for so long that I know what they are going to say or do in any situation. So, I put them in a situation, let them react and their reactions effects what happens next. Then I keep repeating the process.

What do you hope to accomplish with your book other than selling it? - I want to empower women of all ages to be true to who they are and not become someone else in order to please anyone else in their life. And maybe it’s a bit egotistical of me, but I also hope that my book encourages people to do the right thing, even when there’s a high personal cost.

How can our readers get in touch with you? (List your Website URL, Social Media links, and Email) - I love hearing from readers. My email is rebeccainchpartridge@yahoo.com. There is also a contact form on my website, www.ripartridge.com, or @RIPartridge on Facebook and Instagram.

Where can our readers purchase your book? (List different outlets with the link to your book) - My publisher, Black Rose Writing, and I made sure readers can order my book through any bookstore, and of course on-line through Amazon and Barnes and Nobles.
