Can an Alaskan firestorm lead to true love under a midnight sun?

Alaskan firefighter Raynie Atwood thinks she know what she wants—until a walking encyclopedia disguised as a hotshot firefighter storms into her life. Grieving loss and betrayal by the man she once loved, Raynie sets her sights on a top command post for wildland fire. But when when an extended drought, high heat, and beetle-killed forests add up to the perfect firestorm, Raynie’s leadership is put to the test.

To add fuel to the fire, Cohen Tremblay tests Raynie at every turn as she works to save sled dogs and Iditarod mushers dog kennels in the deadly Alaskan conflagration…and to make matters worse, a deadly threat from Raynie’s past has her fearing for her life.

When Raynie’s world goes up in flames, Cohen may be the only one Raynie can rely on…hard to do when she no longer trusts any man, let alone a bullish co-worker. Instead, she constructs a rock-solid containment line around her heart. But fire is unpredictable, and so is love. Will their chance for love be snuffed before it ignites?

Romance, fire, and betrayal…another deadly mix!

INTERVIEW

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

Writing is a lonely profession. It’s just you and your computer. Often, every day distractions lead me away from my job. Only when the muse is on my shoulder and I’m writing up a storm does the job get easier.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

When you say nothing at all—Allison Krauss

High on You—Survivor

Being with you—Smokey Robinson

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

Sometimes I use beta readers and sometimes I use critique partners. Sometimes I just send the book to my editor. It depends on availability.

What book are you reading now?

11/22/63 by Stephen King. Wowza! Great plot about using time travel to correct old mistakes.

How did you start your writing career?

I began writing children’s books with my sister. We had a wonderful childhood and decided to write stories threading fact with fiction about three young girls who solve mysteries.

Tell us about your next release.

I’m thinking about what kind of trouble my protagonist, Jaynie Floyd, can get into next. She’s a new widow and experiencing the single life again. She may find love again on a trip to Las Vegas.

Virtual Book Tour: Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson: Ten Steps from Baker Street by Thomas A. Burns, Jr. #blogtour #interview #mystery #giveaway #rabtbooktours @3Mdetective @RABTBookTours

Return to the streets and alleys of Victorian London, where the game is afoot once again! The Great Detective, Mr. Sherlock Holmes, and his steadfast companion Dr. Watson are back for ten new cases, spanning the length of the quintessential detective's illustrious career. Beginning while Holmes was still a green investigator in Montague Street, this collection encompasses the 1880s and the 1890s, up to the dawn of the new century.  Walk with Holmes as he puzzles over the problem of a drunken teetotaler, celebrates an old English Christmas at the Red Lion, tracks down the Camberwell poisoner, and experiences the horror in King Street. If you've been pining for new traditional, canonical Sherlock Holmes tales, Ten Steps from Baker Street is the collection you've been waiting for.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

Plotting. I’m a pantser – that means I don’t have a set plot when I write – I make it up on the fly. My plots are character-based. I put a character in a situation, then ask, what will the character do next? Sometimes it’s a challenge to get a workable plot that way, but I always manage.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

I don’t have an Ipod, and I can’t play music while I write because it’s too distracting. I have used a recording of English change ringing as white noise for writing because there’s no discernable melody.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

I’ve been part of a beta readers group for about five years now. There are three of us, and we meet once a month to review each others’ works in progress. Our interests are varied – one is an historian, the other a fantasy author. It’s an odd combination, but it works.

What book are you reading now?

A cookbook called Deep Run Roots, by Vivian Howard. She’s a chef who returned to her home in North Carolina, not far from where I live, to start a restaurant based on local food traditions.

How did you start your writing career?

I’ve been writing since I was a kid. I used to write stories about my favorite TV characters, Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin from The Man from U.N.C.L.E. in longhand in marble-backed copybooks. My fiction writing took a fifty-year hiatus when I was working as a scientist and technical writer, but after I retired, I pursued a lifelong dream of writing a mystery series. Thus Natalie McMasters was born.

Tell us about your next release.

The eighth volume of the Natalie McMasters Mysteries is entitled Shooters! It will feature a ripped-from-the-headlines plot about a mass shooting.

About the Author

Thomas A. Burns, Jr. is the author of the Natalie McMasters Mysteries. He was born and grew up in New Jersey, attended Xavier High School in Manhattan, earned B.S degrees in Zoology and Microbiology at Michigan State University and a M.S. in Microbiology at North Carolina State University. He currently resides in Wendell, North Carolina with his wife and son, four cats and a Cardigan Welsh Corgi. As a kid, Tom started reading mysteries with the Hardy Boys, Ken Holt and Rick Brant, and graduated to the classic stories by authors such as A. Conan Doyle, Dorothy Sayers, John Dickson Carr, Erle Stanley Gardner and Rex Stout, to name a few. Tom has written fiction as a hobby all of his life, starting with Man from U.N.C.L.E. stories in marble-backed copybooks in grade school. He built a career as technical, science and medical writer and editor for nearly thirty years in industry and government. Now that he's retired to become a full-time a novelist, he's excited to publish his own mystery series, as well as to contribute stories about his second-most favorite detective to the MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories.

Virtual Book Tour: The Voice of Villainy by Lona Bailey, PhD #blogtour #interview #nonfiction #rabtbooktours @RABTBookTours

The Betty Lou Gerson Story

Nonfiction

Date Published: January 28, 2023

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

She voiced one of Disney’s most infamous villainesses. With her husky timbre and most unforgettable cackle, Betty Lou Gerson terrified an entire generation as Disney’s original “Cruella de Vil” in One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961). Betty used her whiskey-soaked voice to give us an innovative portrait of elegant villainy beyond entertainment’s stereotypical “old hag” antagonists in radio, film, and television. She had a prolific radio career in both Chicago and Hollywood before the silver screen and was featured in many popular television series in the 1950s and 1960s such as Perry Mason, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and Hazel. Though “Cruella” is perhaps her most recognized role, she also performed in other beloved film classics including Cinderella (1950), Mary Poppins (1964), and Cats Don’t Dance (1997).

The great irony of Betty’s story is that while her voice frightened audiences through nearly all mediums, off mic, she was in fact no villainess at all. Betty traversed through some of the most volatile eras in American history, while overcoming many personal tragedies of her own. She was among twentieth century entertainment pioneers and an iconic voice of feminism.

INTERVIEW

Introduce yourself and tell me about what you do.

Lona Bailey is a Golden Age of Hollywood researcher and writer of "Uncredited: The Life and Career of Actress Virginia Gregg." As a PhD and former therapist, Lona is passionate about telling the untold stories of women who perhaps weren’t finished using their own voices during their earthly journeys. Lona is a mother of three with a balanced perspective on the multidimensional elements involved in legacy-maintenance with particular interest in the preservation efforts of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Lona’s biographic works are delicately researched and written with a candid and fair pen and plenty of room for levity. Old Hollywood holds millions of secrets in its gothic sensationalism; with its dark secrets, come just as many shimmering triumphs– and Old Hollywood wouldn’t be as we know it without both.

Tell me more about your journey as an author, including the writing processes?

Like many millennials, I grew up with Betty Lou Gerson's vocal portrayal of "Cruella de Vil" in Disney's classic One Hundred and One Dalmatians. About two years ago when I was still writing my first biography, my oldest daughter became very interested in the film and watched it incessantly for a few weeks. In reconnecting with the classic I became interested in researching the talent behind the fabulous husky villainess. In reading about Betty Lou Gerson I discovered she was born just down the road from my own hometown. Her history and career intrigued me and when I learned she did not yet have a biography, I thought what fun it would be to research and write hers.

Any message for our readers: The remarkable story behind one of the most unforgettable villainesses in history has never before been told until Cruella’s Voice of Villainy: The Betty Lou Gerson Story. Cruella de Vil is timeless in her unwavering popularity with nearly all generations since her film debut in 1961. This book is the first look at the lady behind the fabulously evil voice the world fell in love-hate with.
