Baker Mischief Book 4

Political Thriller

Date Published: 06-10-2025

What would happen if a man of integrity, calm judgment, and firm conservative principles were elected our President? Would he do better than what we have? Or might he discover that behind America’s expressed principles something still lingers from the Fall? That behind our longing for justice, for community, for fairness, for freedom, for beauty, proportion, for the things that nurture all that is good, Something is still out there?

Let’s see.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

Where I start with the BakerMischief series is in observing some sort of dysfunction or disconnection between what we Americans believe ought to be happening and then what’s actually going on. In Wednesday, After the American president has adopted an “America First” agenda that is, at one level, entirely understandable. He makes some policy choices, and then something happens that takes matters out of his hands. And that happens in the first three days of his presidency, on the Wednesday after the Monday inauguration in January 2025.

That’s the easy part.

The hard parts are putting that “problem” into a context that my characters can do something about and then watching them find whatever solution can make a difference.

My wife would say that the hardest part of my writing is keeping ahead of what’s actually happening in the world. When I wrote Mondays, Mondays, focusing on political influence at the Supreme Court, I’d write a couple of chapters and then three weeks later it would turn out that what I created as fiction had in fact already happened, and we hadn’t known about it.

What are your most played songs?

I’m a Boomer. I loved the Beatles, and I recognized awhile ago that their songs were mostly misogynistic or trivial. I removed their Sirius XM channel from my car. I loved Crosby, Stills, and Nash. I discovered Warren Zevon some years ago, and songs like “Reconsider Me,” “Lawyers, Guns, and Money,” and “Searching for a Heart” are on the playlist. “Morning Morgantown” and “For Free” by Joni Mitchell. “Jazzman” by Carole King. “Before this World” and “Snowtime” by James Taylor. “Sunny Came Home” by Shawn Colvin. “Anti-hero” by Taylor Swift. “Building a Mystery” by Sarah McLachlan. Fernando Ortega, “Anita’s Heart,” “The Breaking of the Dawn,” and “Angel Fire.” Chet Atkins, “Alisha” and “The Homecoming Anthem.” And….Jimi Hendrix, “All Along the Watchtower.”

Every June, when Margie and I make strawberry jam, we play Georg Philipp Telemann until we’re done: structured, complex, mysterious, formal—great for doing the “kitchen dance” with two people moving hot jam, crushed strawberries, and sterilized jars around, while making sure no one gets burned from a misstep or pouring hot jam into jars and missing your target.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

I’ve asked my brothers for a quick read, from time to time. Each of them represents a different political perspective. My best reader is my wife, Marjorie Mathison Hance. We write very different sorts of books—she’s murder mysteries, on the cozy side. She’s thoughtful, sympathetic, and a straight arrow on critique. If she raises an issue, I pay attention.

What book are you reading now?

Careless People is the most recent. But that’s for fun, so far. The climate of Silicon Valley might find its way into a novel. I read very frivolous things, science fiction and military fiction and thrillers, as much for a sense of the structure, characterization, and dialogue as for the story. When you start life as an English professor, you’ve already read a lot, and taught a lot of it. And yet I don’t read a lot of modern fiction. A favorite recently was Anxious People, by Frederik Backman.

How did you start your writing career?

I started of all things, as a facebook poster. My first wife, Candy, developed Primary Progressive Aphasia (Bruce Willis’ disease), which became a long downhill run into dementia until her death in 2018. I would write about how we were doing, because many of my former students knew her from her own teaching. That work, with much more, became The Long Run, a book about marriage and caregiving.

After Candy’s death, I met Margie as she was finishing her first book, Murder at Pelican Lake. I watched her work through the tasks of editing and publication. And then as we came up to the midterm elections in 2022, I figured I had had enough of political crazies, and decided to write something about it.

Tell us about your next release.

I’ve just finished Wednesday, After, which goes from December 2024 through early November 2025, so I’m actually a little ahead of myself. The next in line—I’m flailing about with it right now—is Thursday, Far to Go. One of my brothers wants me to write a book about local bureaucracy, and call it Friday Afternoons Off, and it’s possible. It would take Ed and Melody Baker off the national stage, and give me a new direction.

But I started off three years ago on a book called Upstream which addresses intractable contemporary social landmines. Those are the kinds of problems that we find extraordinarily hard to resolve. We tend to see social problems way “downstream,” after they’ve gotten complicated, because we haven’t faced into their root causes. The causes are often deeply rooted in the way we think and how we’re influenced by others. So I’d like to work on that, but I think I will need to buy body armor first. The people who like simple solutions are out there, and don’t like to face how complicated people and culture really are. And no one likes to be responsible for creating our current social confusion, which probably means we are all responsible.

About the Author

At the age of four, Russell Anders started telling stories, often interrupting his mother during bedtime reading to ask, “Then what happened?” She always answered, “You tell me,” and his imagination conjured fantastical tales of dragons and dinosaurs.

He gravitated toward a career as a technical writer and writing coach for software companies. He also briefly served as a columnist for Dragon Magazine. One of his favorite hobbies includes tabletop role playing, especially as the game master. And yes, he's as cruel to the characters in his games as he is to the characters in his books; his players love him for it.

Russel lives with the constant canine companionship of whip-smart but goofy Sigurd, an English Mastiff (the best breed ever).

Daemones ex Machina is his debut novel.

A Sean McPherson Novel, Book 5

Mystery/Thriller/Private Investigator
Date Published: 04-15-2025
Publisher: SparkPress

A contemporary crime thriller perfect for Louise Penny and Robert Dugoni fans, Illusionist presents PI McPherson with an impossible dilemma: kill an author at a writing retreat in the Pacific Northwest, or let a college student die.

When an illusionist arrives at Pines & Quill, one of the retreat’s owners vanishes—right in front of witnesses who see nothing. Meanwhile, crime boss Georgio Gambino tightens his grip, blackmailing a writer into murder and framing Sean McPherson. His threat is clear: obey, or your daughter dies.

As McPherson investigates, he uncovers a brewing power struggle—Carmine Fiore, Gambino’s second-in-command, is staging a coup. While Gambino’s network traffics drugs, weapons, and humans, Fiore manipulates the Sureños gang, planting evidence to shift blame.

Desperate to turn the tide, McPherson seeks a dangerous alliance. But when deception is the game, only illusion can outmaneuver the truth. Enlisting the retreat’s eclectic writers—including a NASCAR driver, a triathlete, a house-flipping architect, and a magician with secrets of her own—McPherson sets the stage for the ultimate trick: survival.

Her husband, Len, a private pilot, and Henry, their not-so-standard Standard Poodle, join her on daily walks. She always carries a camera because sometimes, the best word choice is a picture.

A journey that left an indelible imprint on her was a 20-day, 211-mile trek across the majestic landscapes of Scotland. She, her husband, and their son hiked from the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, with the pinnacle being the climb of Ben Nevis at the midpoint of their adventure, the highest point in the British Isles.

Yulia

The wind whipped my hair across my face, stinging my eyes as I stood at the edge of the school grounds. My heart pounded, each beat a reminder of the choice before me. Memories flashed through my mind -- cruel hands, mocking laughter, endless fear. I closed my eyes, willing the images away.

This was it. The end. My fingers trembled as I gripped the knife tighter. Just one cut and it would all be over. No more pain. No more shame. I took a shaky breath. “Prosti menya, sestra,” I whispered. Forgive me, sister.

The blade glinted in the fading sunlight. So sharp. So final. I pressed it to my wrist.

A roar split the air.

My eyes snapped open. In the distance, a motorcycle engine growled, growing louder. Closer. I hesitated, the knife hovering above my skin. Who would come here? Why now? The engine’s rumble filled my ears, drowning out the frantic beating of my heart. Despite myself, I turned toward the sound.

A flicker of… something. Not quite hope. But curiosity. A momentary distraction from the abyss. I lowered the knife, just slightly. My mind raced. Should I wait? See who it was? Or finish what I’d started?

The motorcycle drew nearer. Any moment now, it would crest the hill. I bit my lip, indecision paralyzing me. The wind continued to howl around me, urging me forward. But that sound… it called to me. Promising… what?

I didn’t know.

For just a moment, my despair lifted. And in that moment, I chose to wait.

The motorcycle crested the hill, its rider a dark silhouette against the blazing orange sky. My breath caught in my throat. He was massive, all broad shoulders and muscled limbs, his leather cut emblazoned with a patch I couldn’t quite make out.

He dismounted in one fluid motion, his boots hitting the ground with a heavy thud. My fingers tightened around the knife as he strode toward me, his pace urgent but measured. “Easy now, darlin’,” he called out, his voice a low rumble that carried on the wind. “Why don’t you put that knife down?”

I shook my head, taking a step back. “Stay away,” I warned. “I don’t know you.”

He slowed his approach, hands raised placatingly. “Name’s Hawk. I’m with the Reckless Kings. I was sent here to help. A few of my brothers are waiting nearby to make sure we don’t run into trouble.”

My mind reeled. The Reckless Kings? How did they know? Why would they care? “No one can help,” I whispered, more to myself than to him. “It’s too late.”

Hawk took another careful step forward. “It’s never too late, sweetheart. Trust me on that.”

I laughed, a bitter sound that surprised even me. “Trust? I don’t even know what that means anymore.”

His gaze met mine. “Then let me show you. Just… put the knife down. Please.”

My hand trembled. Part of me wanted to believe him, to grasp at this lifeline he was offering. But the fear, the pain of the past years, it all threatened to drown me. “I can’t,” I choked out. “You don’t understand what he did to me.”

Hawk’s expression softened. “Maybe not exactly. But I’ve seen enough pain in this world to recognize it. You’re not alone, Yulia. Not anymore.”

My name on his lips startled me. How did he know? Who sent him?

As if sensing my thoughts, he added, “Your sister’s worried sick. She asked us to find you.”

Tears welled in my eyes. “Oksana?”

Hawk nodded. “She loves you. Let us help. Let me take you somewhere safe.”

The knife slipped in my grasp, my resolve wavering… The knife clattered to the ground, and my legs gave out. I crumpled, expecting to hit the cold earth. Instead, strong arms caught me, steadying me against a broad chest.

“I’ve got you,” Hawk murmured, his voice a low rumble. “You’re safe now.”

I trembled, my body wracked with silent sobs. Years of pent-up fear and pain poured out of me as Hawk held me, his grip firm but gentle. “Can you walk?” he asked after a moment.

I nodded weakly, not trusting my voice. Hawk kept an arm around me as he guided me toward his motorcycle. The machine loomed before us, all gleaming chrome and sleek lines. “Ever ridden before?” Hawk asked, swinging his leg over the seat.

I shook my head, eyeing the bike warily. “Nyet… no.”

He extended his hand. “First time for everything. Hold on tight, okay?”

With shaking fingers, I grasped his hand and climbed on behind him. The leather of his cut was smooth under my palms as I wrapped my arms around his waist. I heard three more motorcycles and noticed the men were also from the Reckless Kings.

“Ready?” Hawk called over his shoulder.

“Da,” I whispered, tightening my grip.

The engine roared to life, vibrating through my entire body. We took off, the world blurring around us as we sped away from the school grounds. Away from my nightmares.

I pressed my face against Hawk’s back, the wind whipping my hair. Part of me still couldn’t believe this was real. That I was escaping. That someone had come for me. “Where are we going?” I shouted over the engine’s rumble.

“Somewhere safe,” Hawk called back. “Our compound. You’ll be protected there.”

Protected. The word sent a shiver through me -- of fear or hope, I wasn’t sure.

As we rode into the gathering darkness, I clung to Hawk, to this stranger who’d become my unexpected savior. My mind raced with questions, with doubts. But for now, I let the roar of the engine drown out my thoughts, focusing only on the road ahead and the promise of safety it held.

Tears stung my eyes, instantly whisked away by the biting wind. My chest ached with each ragged breath, emotions churning like a storm inside me. Gratitude and terror warred for dominance.

“You okay back there?” Hawk’s voice barely reached me over the engine’s roar.

I nodded against his back, not trusting my voice. My fingers dug into the leather of his cut, anchoring me to this surreal moment.

About the Author

It’s never too late to make my dreams come true. I was lucky to be born on the southern shores of the Mediterranean Sea, specifically in Alexandria. My summers were spent on the beach, enjoying the sunshine, the original surfboards/paddle boards, and the game of sand pickleball before it even made it to the US.

Not having TVs, I read many books, especially wartime ones, Ian Flemings’s early James Bond novels, John Le Carre, Agatha Christie, Maurice LeBlanc (Arsene Lupin), and other detective/mystery-type books. For school, we had to read all the French Classics. I was always intrigued by how the characters always managed to resolve their problems.

At the Age of 19, I came to California as a foreign student. After graduating with an engineering degree, I was able to obtain my permanent residency. I never looked back. My mother was able to join me, but unfortunately, my father passed away.

Once I graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree, I joined an International Engineering and Construction Company and spent all my working time with them. What was great is that the company moved me to many work projects around the world, where I spent an average of a couple of years on each. My wife joined me on some of these assignments.

But my love for writing was always with me. During my stay abroad, I wrote a philosophical book and many articles for local newspapers and the Laguna Beach weekly issues, comparing life in Laguna Beach with life in Indonesia. I wrote articles for the company’s monthly newsletter, as well as for other publications.

I recently decided to use a “nom de plume”/pseudonym for my writings. My real name is Jean-Pierre Zacaropoulos. Having a last name starting with a “Z” had me called upon in classes either as one of the last ones or one of the first one. It was always a guessing game. But usually having an A or B will push you to the top (Ha! Ha!). So I decided to choose a “B”

Now, I have a little bit more time, so I decided to make my long-time desire come true. I wrote my mystery/romance novel, which will be followed shortly after by a sequel.

Holocaust Biography

Date Published: December 10, 2024

Publisher: Book Publishers USA

This narrative gives us a detailed chronicle of the turbulent life of Rebbe Aryeh Leibish Gottesman Zt”l. Beginning from his childhood years, with the next chapters bringing alive the years of pain he endured in the most horrendous period of the holocaust. Following the highly interesting period detailing his formative years in America, that gives us a glimpse of the post-trauma that a war survivor lived with. His scars and pain and loss that accompanied him for the next seventy years

When he was still but a child and a young bochur, little Leibish fought ferociously against life’s odds to learn Torah in times that antisemitism was common in the little town in Czech where he lived. After suffering all the horrors of Auschwitz, Dachau, and more, when he lost both his parents and family, except for one surviving brother. R’ Leibish threw upon himself again with happiness and fortitude to accept the yoke of learning Torah. First in the city of Serdaheli and then in the famed Nitra Yeshiva in America, where he became one of the most notable and close students of the renowned Torah giant and distinguished war activist Hagaon Hatzaddik Rebbe Michoel Ber Weissmandel ZT”L. He stood out in the front line of Talmudei Chachomim of the first generation after the war.

The next step in life was when with his diligence and persistence he grew to be a major Gaon that illuminated the path for many many students and breathed a life of Torah up to his final moment.

Interview

Story

The train ride out of Dachau is unique since it's not recorded in history. While it is known that the Nazis wanted to destroy all evidence from the Americans as they were close to Dachau. Most of the Jews were moved southward as known as the so-called DEATH MARCH. However, since my father's barrack was the weakest of all, the Nazis decided to move his barrack by train. This was the only train, and history did not get to know about this train ride since most of them died on the way.

Introduce yourself and tell me about what you do.

My name is Emil Gottesman and I am 67 years old, married and blessed with a family of children and grandchildren. Owner of a medium size US Customs House Broker and Freight Forwarder company. In my community, I'm known by my Hebrew name Amrom Gottesman.

Born to my Parents R’ Leibish and Rickel Gottesman, both Holocaust survivors, raised and still live my life, with strong values of family, religion, and faith

Tell me more about your journey as an author, including the writing processes.

In 2020, I authored and published a book in Yiddish "Demis Arya", a biography about my late father Rabbi Arya Leibish Gottesman, a holocaust survivor and Torah Scholar. While I did put together all the chapters, however, I hired a professional writer to do the actual writing. It was published by the old method of actually printing 1200 copies and assigning a distributor to distribute it to local Judaica retailers. Due to the nature of the publication, I knew very well that such a book would not be in demand outside of the Jewish, Orthodox, and Religious communities.

In 2022, I authored "Strength Of Within" an English translation of only the Holocaust section of Demis Arya. For the publishing process, I did the same by hiring a translator. I wasn't that thrilled with her work, while her vocabulary was outstanding, however, her writing style was with alot of shortcuts. I assigned an online publishing company for editing, formatting, book cover design, and POD (print on demand) publishing on KDP Amazon. I published the book by myself on other POD platforms such as Ingram Spark, Barness and Noble, and some others.

I never did any marketing on this book

Due to popular demand, I decided to publish "The Life And Legacy of Rabbi Aryeh Leibish Gottesman ZT”L" an English translation of the whole Demis Arya book. In addition I've included the biography of the “Foundations” which was built by my ancestors the Gottesman, Shelesinger, Dushinsky, Shreiber, Rotesdorfer, and Gestetner families. I hired a different person to do the translation. Likewise, I redid the translation of the Holocaust section, since I wanted the whole book to conform with the same writing style..

Tell me about your Book

45% - 50% is about the holocaust my father was 16 after losing his whole family; he did not succumb and rebuild until he became a Torah giant. My mother was only 6 years old. I've not seen such a detailed documentary about the holocaust. It would be advisable that you should read the reviews on Amazon, and see how readers react to the book. https://www.amazon.com/dp/196644222X#averageCustomerReviewsAnchor

“A musing science fiction novel about the future of AI, Anticipation Day follows a group of friends as they try to improve their lives through government-sanctioned fantasies." —Foreword Clarion Reviews

“A boundary-pushing plunge into a vividly imagined future, Anticipation Day poses powerful questions about identity, the human experience, and our digital destiny as a species, resulting in a provocative mixture of Black Mirror and The Surge.” —The Independent Review of Books

In the summer of 2026, amidst the sights and sounds of one of the oldest pubs in London, Dr. Joshua Lee receives a call that will alter his life for the foreseeable future—he’s asked to work on a clandestine project that will transform every American’s way of life.

Six years later, amidst the steel and glass canyons of the Denver suburbs, a group of friends assemble for dinner the night before their first escape into Anticipation Day, an immersive simulated experience that is promised to be an annual respite from the daily grind.

Amongst this group of friends are Alexandra, Eric, Patrick, Mike and MaryAnne, each at inflection points in their lives and each with their own life scars and unrealized dreams. As they prepare to plug into the simulation, they are forced to confront their own fears and desires, all while interfacing with their chosen simulated experience, blurring the lines between reality and the artificial dreamscape.

These experiences force the group to confront their deepest fears, chase exclusive happiness, and unlock truths buried within their souls. As they delve deeper into the algorithmic labyrinth, more truths about their existence are fully revealed.

However, the question begs: Will their journey lead to salvation, or will it unravel the very fabric of their existence?

Join this eclectic band of suburbanites as they look for meaning amidst the chaos of the digital age. Anticipation Day beckons, but not everything is as is seems in this electrifying tale of urban futurism.

Interview

Introduce yourself and tell me about what you do.

I am a certified public accountant and work for a public accounting firm. My family also invested in a kosher-style delicatessen in NJ that my wife runs during the week. This is my first foray into writing professionally

Tell me more about your journey as an author, including the writing processes.

The idea for this book started a few years ago with the concept of how the feeling of “anticipation” is missing in most people’s lives. I had to think about what would people anticipate doing for the entire year that it would cause society to be happier. Eventually, I came up with the idea of a government-sponsored program that allowed you to enter a simulation once a year to experience an entire different life from your real life. The writing took about 4 months with ~ a year of editing and rewriting. Cannabis was the main driver behind the creativity of the stories as it allowed me to relate to the characters and where they were in their lives and how they would react to their simulation experiences. It was a fun experience but not sure I would do it again

Tell me about your Book

As I previously noted, the book involves a government sponsored program that allows every citizen one day a year to enter a simulated world of their choosing. Each citizen could spend what would feel like up to one year in the simulation, but would only be ~7 hours in real-time). The citizen also has the option of reliving one day from their memories if they so choose. The prologue of the book follows the development of this technology and how it was eventually approved by the government. Part One of the book introduces the main characters of the book who will be going into their simulation experiences together. I wanted the reader to get a good sense of where each of the characters were emotionally the day before their simulation experiences. Part Two of the book follows each of the character’s simulation experiences, so it is five separate stories the characters go through. Part Three follows the post-simulation experience with a surprise twist at the end.
