Can you tell us a little about the process of getting this book published? How did you come up with the idea and how did you start?
For years now, I think most people have been feeling that the world is spiraling increasingly out of control. As a pastor in a local church, I’ve had countless conversations with people who have felt this way. The good news is that the Bible is not silent about these things! The bad news is that the book of the Bible that most deals with end times events - Revelation – is perhaps the most misunderstood book in the entire Bible. People find it intimidating and hard to understand. So, I taught our church through the book verse by verse twice over the past 10 years. Tens of thousands of people also listened to the messages online and shared how blessed they were to finally be able to understand Revelation. They were encouraged, filled with hope, and loved Jesus more. I received quite a few requests to put the information into a book, and that began the slow process of turning my sermons into what would become “Hail the King.”
What surprised you most about getting your book published?
The work it takes to write a semi-academic book, in terms of fact-checking and tracking down sources and citations. It’s significant. It was a fantastic learning process that impacted the way I’ll research subjects for the rest of my life, and the end result is a book with every claim vetted and every source identified – something I value as a reader myself.
Tell us a little about what you do when you aren’t writing
I’m married with six children, and I help pastor a church. So, there’s not a lot of spare time! Recreationally, our family enjoys hiking in the beautiful Vancouver area of Canada, where we live. I also enjoy Pickleball, singing and playing guitar, songwriting, music production, and fine meats and cheeses.
As a published author, what would you say was the most pivotal point of your writing life?
The relatively simple act of starting. Whatever that first step is, I would encourage people to take it. Don’t worry about how long it’s going to take, just start! Take your next step and begin devoting consistent time to the task of writing.
Where do you get your best ideas and why do you think that is?
My writing process is a little different to most, as I write books about book of the Bible. That means the subject matter and direction of the book is dictated by the biblical text – something I’m grateful for. That being said, I think some of my best writing happens when I work to bring biblical characters to life in the mind of the reader by reminding them they were real people with real emotions.
What is the toughest criticism given to you as an author?
I only recently published my first book and haven’t received any brutal criticism yet. I’m sure it’ll come with time!
What has been your best accomplishment as a writer?
Finishing the immense task of writing my first book! It ended up being 834 pages long and containing over 500 footnotes. I was blissfully ignorant when I started the process, thinking it would be quick and take maybe a year (it took five).
How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?
None, but I have many sermon series I’d like to turn into books in the future.

Jeff Thompson was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and has served full-time in churches since the age of 19 as a youth pastor, worship pastor, and teaching pastor. In 2012, he planted what would become Gospel City Church, where he has served as a pastor for over a decade. Jeff has a passion for Bible prophecy, which has led him to study and teach through some of the Bible’s most compelling and challenging texts. He lives in the beautiful Greater Vancouver region of Canada with his wife, Charlene, their 6 children, and a dog he foolishly promised his oldest daughter she could get when she turned 12.
