First they came for his sister’s eye. Now they’re coming for
his. And what’s even worse is he deserves it.
Henry has never had anything good happen to him, period. Full stop.
That’s why, after school, he’s going to put on his big-boy pants
and confess his love to his best friend—because the universe owes him
one, dammit, and he needs a win.
But maybe doing it on Drill Day wasn't the best idea—the one day a
month that healthcare conglomerate Axiom infiltrates schools across America
to select a new candidate to give up one of their eyes, for... research? And
if this Drill Day is anything like the last, Henry will never get a chance
at a good life. Especially if his past keeps threatening to eat him alive,
and especially if his old ways of keeping the darkness at bay refuse to work
anymore.
INTERVIEW
What is the hardest part of writing your books?
The hardest part is figuring out what works and what doesn’t. There are loads of good ideas that make it into a first draft, and weeding things out is difficult because you don’t want to mess up your book baby. That’s why giving yourself a lot of distance away from the manuscript afterwards is so important—several weeks, at least; otherwise, you won’t have a good objective eye to read things fresh. That’s also why beta readers are so imperative, because they’re not as close to those ideas as you are.
What are your most played songs?
Recently it’s been the entirety of Beyonce’s new Cowboy Carter album! It’s incredible from front to back.
Do you have critique partners or beta readers?
Yes! A good friend and my husband served as beta readers for this book. They got me through a lot of tough plot holes!
What book are you reading now?
The First to Die at the End by Adam Silvera. It’s got me all in my feels.
How did you start your writing career?
I received my bachelor’s in fiction writing from Columbia College, where I learned the skills and techniques to building a strong story.
Tell us about your next release.
I’m hard at work on the second installment to The Cyclopes’ Eye series, and in the meantime, I’ve got lots of poems and short stories published, linked on my website, jeffreyhaskey-valerius.com.
