Pepper Chan tried to leave the scars of her abduction behind her when she joined her current veterinary practice. However, a chance encounter with Roddy Eastman, the brother of her former best friend, leaves her shaken and desperate to keep her distance. The last thing Pepper wants to do is relive the terrible ordeal from so many years ago. Her kidnapper was never caught, and Pepper is afraid to trust anyone.

Attorney Roddy Eastman is determined to find out why Dr. Chan wants to avoid him. He tries to convince himself that his drive to seek out answers from her is just his concern for his sister’s friend and not something deeper—like his long-standing attraction to her since high school.

The sudden murder of her boyfriend makes it clear that a deranged murderer is taunting Pepper, waiting for the right moment to strike. When Pepper reluctantly reaches out to him, Roddy offers her his help. Together, they must dig into her past to uncover the identity of the stalker before his twisted plans can become a reality.

CHAPTER 1

The raven-haired veterinarian stepped into the examining room and watched as a frustrated man tried to gain control of the angry, spitting cat climbing up his arm.

After tightening his grip on the short-haired, gray feline, he looked up at her. She recognized the boyish smile on the handsome man’s face. It was Roddy Eastman, and he was even more attractive now than he had been when they were in high school in Angel Falls. “How can I help you, Mr. Eastman?”

His eyes widened, and he stammered, “Pepper Chan?”

She smiled and said, “Yes, it’s me. Long time no see. How’s your sister? I think about her often.”

“Kris is great.”

“When did you move to Albuquerque?” she said.

“I went to UNM, and after I graduated I stayed.”

“I understand you’ve acquired a new cat?”

“No, I mean, yes, but he acquired me, not the other way around. He showed up on my porch one day and has refused to leave. He thinks it’s okay to come into my house and sleep on my bed.” His eyes twinkled and he grinned. “I’m sorry. I’m babbling like an idiot.”

Pepper was amused at his efforts to control the cat. She hoped he wouldn’t lose a finger as he set the beat-up tom on the stainless-steel table. The animal hissed again, but Roddy held it firmly. She began to examine the cat and then heard a tap on the door.

Pepper turned toward her partner who was speaking from the doorway.

“Sorry, to interrupt, Pepper, but there’s a surgical emergency out here that I’d be more comfortable placing in your hands. I can take over here if you don’t mind?”

“Okay with you, Roddy?” Pepper said.

“Yeah, that’s fine. It was great seeing you again. I’ll tell Kris.”

~ ~ ~

Pepper had rushed out of the room so quickly that Roddy wasn’t sure she’d ever been there, or if she was merely a wishful daytime fantasy.

The doctor who took over for Pepper was a tall, buxom woman with blond hair and brown eyes peering out from glasses. She was a couple of inches shorter than he was, and she spoke with a distinctive Boston accent. She was friendly enough and seemed to take in stride the quick change in plans.

“Looks like this old boy has been around the block a few times, literally,” the vet said. “I’m Doctor Barbara Ashland, and what is this fellow’s name?”

“Devil Cat,” Roddy said giving the animal his best stern fatherly look. Changing the subject, he said, “I noticed Dr. Chan still uses her maiden name for the business. I guess she’s never been married?”

The look Ashland sent him made it clear how out-of-line his question had been.

“Sorry,” he muttered. “I knew her in high school.”

“I see. Well, I’ve been her partner for over a year, all I can tell you is she isn’t married now.” She scratched Devil Cat between the ears. “What’s the story?” Dr. Ashland said.

For a minute, Roddy thought she was talking about Pepper, but then he realized the doctor was asking about the cat. “One day, he showed up on my front porch and wouldn’t go away. So I fed him, and then next thing I knew, every time I opened the door he came inside. Seems to think he belongs there.” Roddy reached out and gave the cat a gentle pat. “To tell you the truth, the dang thing has grown on me.”

Dr. Ashland picked up a clipboard. “He needs shots, a check for worms, and he’ll need to be neutered, of course, but otherwise he looks good. You want to leave him today?”

“Uh, yeah, I guess.” Roddy’s brain was still trying to grasp what the vet had said, and he wanted to grab his own balls and hold on to them. He leaned over and whispered in the cat’s ear, “Sorry, man, I really am. I bet if you’d known this was going to happen, you’d have gone to someone else’s porch.”

~ ~ ~

Roddy rolled down the window on his pickup and threaded the cool breeze through his fingers. Early spring was one of his favorite seasons in Albuquerque, even if Mother Nature was fickle and unpredictable. Today, it was in the high seventies, but tomorrow a front could come pushing in and drop the temperatures into the forties. Most of the snow had melted off Sandia Peak, and the redbud trees were popping their blooms.

He sang along to a country love song on the radio, Roddy thought back to Pepper’s haunting eyes. She had been so gorgeous back when he was fifteen. Time had been good to her. She was still breathtaking. Her Chinese ancestry was evident in her shiny black hair and the shape of her eyes, but not their color. They were a deep, dark, indigo blue.

She had been his first serious crush, although she never gave him a second look. He remembered she had moved after her senior year, and he had thought about her now and again over the years. His older sister Kris was in the same grade as Pepper. Maybe she would know something more about her.

His truck bumped over the gravel road leading to his home and property. He’d scrimped and saved to put the down payment on the land when he’d first taken a position as a criminal defense attorney right out of law school. A few more years of saving and a couple of good verdicts had brought him more affluent clients who gave his bank account a much-needed boost. He was able to build a cozy, ranch-style home in Belen, a small community on the outskirts south of Albuquerque.

Kris’s black Dodge Ram was parked next to the barn where she kept her two prized quarter horses. After her separation from her husband, Roddy suggested she move in with him until she got back on her feet. Kris was still angry with her ex-husband. The rotten, drunken, SOB, as she liked to call him, had managed to gamble away almost everything they ever owned. All she had left were the horses and the truck because they were in her name before she married.

“Hey, little girl,” Roddy greeted his sister as he watched her groom the handsome chestnut horse.

“Hey, yourself,” she said, straightening up from cleaning out the animal’s hind hoof. “I thought you were going to drop off Hell Cat and go to your office.”

“Please, Sis, get it right. It’s Devil Cat. You’ll hurt his feelings.”

She put the horse’s leg down and walked toward Roddy. “I don’t see him anywhere around. I think I’m safe. I gather they could take care of him today?”

“Yeah, poor guy. He’s going to lose his nuts you know.”

“Weren’t you expecting that?”

“Eventually I guess, but not today.”

“Better him than you,” she laughed and punched him hard on the arm.

“Hey,” Roddy said. “What was that for? Because you hate the male species?”

“Not all,” she said, “just most. What’s up? Why are you back so early?”

After opening the gate to the pasture, Kris gently swatted the horse on the rump. Roddy helped her put the grooming tools away, and they walked back toward the house. “I can work from home tonight. I don’t have anything pressing, and I want to talk to you about something,” Roddy said.

“Okay. What?”

“Do you remember Pepper Chan from high school?”

“Wow! Talk about a blast from the past,” Kris said while kicking off her muddy boots near the back door. “Sure, I remember Pepper. Why?”

“I saw her today. She’s a veterinarian now.”

“Small world isn’t it? I was so sad when her mom died, and she had to move and go live with her dad. We said we’d stay in contact with each other, and we did until we both started college. After that, I got a couple of emails and phone calls, but then they stopped. I always hated that we lost touch.” Kris moved toward the kitchen sink to wash her hands and said, “Well, how is she? How does she look? Is she married?”

“Beats me. Pepper didn’t stick around long enough for me to ask. She had an emergency, and another vet took over."

“I remember hearing that something bad happened to her when she was in college,” Kris said, “but I never knew what.”

“Strange,” Roddy said, opening the refrigerator and taking out a beer. “I wonder what it was?”

“And you’re not going to leave it alone are you?”

“Not a chance.”

Review

Angela Smith has brought to life very multi-dimensional characters and given them a purpose.
The world she has created is so vivid and really helps the reader feel like they are there with the characters. The scenario they are in is heartbreaking. Such a thirst for justice and redemption from something that tore their world apart.

A strong and fast paced plot will keep you invested the entire way through. This was one of those reads that really made me feel a deeper connection than I was expecting.

The characters, plot, and pacing were all spot on and really helped to elevate the novel. A superb Romantic Suspense novel.

Angela Smith is a Texas native who, years ago, was dubbed most likely to write a novel during her senior year in high school. She always had her nose stuck in a book, even hiding them behind her textbooks during school study time. Her dream began at a young age when her sister started reciting 'Brer Rabbit' after their mom read it to them so often. She told her mom she'd write a story one day and never gave up on that dream even though her mom was never able to see it come to fruition. By day, she works as a certified paralegal and office manager at her local District Attorney's office and spends her free time with her husband, their pets, and their many hobbies. Although life in general keeps her very busy, her passion for writing and getting the stories out of her head tends to make her restless if she isn't following what some people call her destiny.

INTERVIEW

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

The editing process is the most grueling for me. I tend to edit a bit as I write and do some revisions each writing session, but it’s not until I have a finished draft that I start going through it in detail. I have a checklist of over a hundred words that I search for which includes passive voice, adverbs and curse words. I look for overuse and repetition. Fixing all that takes weeks and is taxing on the brain!

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

I have an Ipod Nano that I use for running, but most of my songs are played via Spotify. I have quite a wide variety, but some of the most played are:
  • Blackbird by Alter Bridge
  • When It Rains It Pours by Luke Combs
  • Wasted Time by The Eagles
  • The Analog Kid by Rush
  • I Like It Heavy by Halestorm
  • She Used to Be Mine by Sara Bareilles

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

I have a couple of folks who are big fans of the Jake Caldwell series who I send the first semi-polished final draft to for their feedback. I don’t send off individual chapters or sections because to me that’s like showing a two-minute clip of a feature film and asking someone what they think of the entire flick. I ask for feedback on what they liked, what they loved, what made them laugh out loud (both because it was good and because it was a stupid line) and what they didn’t like.

What book are you reading now?

I just finished A Killing Secret by fellow Kansas City writer Robert E. Dunn who has a series about a female detective in the Ozarks who I like so much that I pulled her into The Asylum (with Robert’s permission, of course). Next up is The Institution by Stephen King.

How did you start your writing career?

With a mediocre detective/serial killer novel I wrote in my twenties after reading a really piss poor book by a New York Times Bestselling author who shall remain nameless. I thought “I could do better than this!” Turns out that I couldn’t at the time. After failing to get an agent for that initial novel, I wrote the start of a number of books over the next fifteen years but couldn’t get anything to stick until I wrote a coming of age love story called Jack & Diane that I ended up self-publishing. It’s a great story told from Jack’s perspective and I sold the option for it last year. Fingers crossed! If you grew up in the 80’s and want a little blast from the past, you should check it out.

It wasn’t until I wrote Poor Boy Road and entered the Twitter writing contest Nestpitch that I got noticed and signed by Lakewater Press. I made the finals of the contest but didn’t win. However, I was fortunate enough to get picked up by Lakewater for a book deal which was incredibly exciting.

Tell us about your next release.

Asylum Road is book 4 in the Jake Caldwell series and picks up directly where Blackbird Road ended with Jake finding out the psycho drug lord he faced in Poor Boy Road has escaped from prison. Jake and his county sheriff best friend Bear jump into action because they know Shane Langston is coming for them and their families. Readers will get wrapped up an action-packed adventure with Jake and Bear battling a biker gang called the Blood Devils, drugs, guns, murder and sex trafficking. This might be my favorite book of the series so far and am anxious to get it out into the world.

INTERVIEW
PJ Colando, author of The Winner’s Circle

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

I was trained to begin with a logline, a movie industry term, which is 1-2 sentences (25-35 words) that become the ‘container’ of the story. This is vital because, as a ‘white pager’ who doesn’t pre-plot by design, I constrain my tendency to digress... yet I digress. Ha!

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

Would you believe... a shuffle mix of the Beatles, Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, and Taylor Swift. All are good storytellers.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

I have bushels of both, writers supporting writers in densely-populated So Cal. My husband is Beta One and he is the best!

What book are you reading now?

The Murder List by Hank Phillippi Ryan. She and I lived in adjoining Indiana towns pre our encore careers of writing. Hoosiers are loyal.

How did you start your writing career?

My husband and I saved to become early retirees, so that we could travel while we could still bound. I made a list of other pursuits I’d abandoned to pursue a career in speech-language pathology.... my husband is glad that I chose writing rather than French Horn because my hobby is quiet and doesn’t interfere with his pastime: watching college football and basketball, as well as open-wheel auto racing on his big screen/

Betsy Blossom Brown is a coming-of-age story about a young girl who journeys from being an observer of life to a participant. Her seemingly idyllic life with her privileged South Carolina family is turned upside down, revealing truths and disarming pretensions. She's independent, opinionated, and brave. Uncertainty enters her life when she and her mother move to the Appalachian region until, through a series of unsettling events; she sheds her uncertainty and learns to embrace life. The graphite illustrations help to understand the depth of Betsy Blossom Brown, as she sketches her way through life recognizing her mild Asperger syndrome, without letting it curb her appetite for life.

Excerpt

Chapter 1

Charleston, SC:  2007

Fourteen-year-old Betsy Blossom Brown sat on the saffron-colored, vinyl kitchen chair across from her mother, Lily. Lily’s opened palms buried her face, and Betsy’s elbows rested on the vintage, enameled, red and white kitchen table, the palms of her hands holding up each side of her chin. Betsy and her mother loved this vintage kitchen set. They loved anything vintage. But they loved this set in particular, because it was found on top of a heap of discarded furniture outside a dilapidated beach house on Sullivan’s Island. Betsy’s chestnut curls concealed her olive green eyes so that her mother would not be able to see every tear that fell from them. Betsy watched in a near hypnotic state as each teardrop seemed to disperse on the shiny, enameled tabletop. She secretly longed to go wherever they were headed—to a place where what she had just been told hadn’t yet arrived.

“But I don’t understand,” Betsy winced.

“I know, Sugar, it’s difficult. I don’t even understand it, but it is the truth. And ever since the day you entered my life, I made a promise to always tell you the truth, no matter what. Your father thought different. He believed a lie was okay if it meant that you avoided hurting someone. And while that may have a bit of merit, especially with the truth I just shared with you, it’s just not the way I see it. And in this moment, I would certainly love to be able to keep this truth under lock and key forever, but sooner or later, you would find out. And then you’d wonder why I hadn’t been the one to tell you what happened to your father.”

“But why? Why did he do it? I need to know why. I need to know the reason. It’s a quirk I’ve had ever since I was born, Mom. You know that. I always need to know why.” Betsy continued to snap at the placket of her front, periwinkle-colored, linen shirt. She loved this shirt most because it had been her mother’s when she was in college. It was a bit oversized, so Betsy sometimes belted it with her wide, brown, leather belt. Finding plackets and seams on pockets and collars was something Betsy had done since she was a small child. She seemed to look for them without even thinking, and yet, she was thinking of nothing else.

“I don’t know why, Betsy. He didn’t have a reason. All he said when I saw him was, ‘Lily, dear Lily, I’m sorry. Please tell Betsy that I’m sorry.’”

I turned each side of my hair behind my ears, wiped at my eyes, and looked to Mr. Peabody and Steve as they raced furiously around their cage, stopping briefly to hop on the plastic, multi-colored toy ferris wheel, and tumbled to the tiny pieces of torn comic strips from the newspaper and fleece bedding that lined the floor of their cage. I had begged my mother for pet rats for months before she surprised me with a trip to MacGruder’s Pets on Sullivan’s Island. My father was out of town at a business meeting (or so, at the time, we thought), and that always presented a prime opportunity for us to charge ahead with plans that he might not have approved. He pretty well knew that whenever he went out of town, my mother and I would retaliate by doing or buying something that hadn’t been mutually agreed upon. We thought it was funny; he didn’t.

Betsy Blossom Brown walked over to her mother, wrapped both arms around her neck, and picked up the morning paper that her mother had brought for her to read. The front page made her dizzy, like the time she rode the “Round Up” at the carnival. She took the newspaper with her to her room and chose the rigidity of her desk chair to read what she already knew.

LOCAL BUSINESSMAN WILLIAM BROWN

CHARGED WITH EMBEZZLEMENT OF

CLIENT FUNDS

William D. Brown of Charleston was charged on Friday with embezzlement of client funds from his management firm, Brown & Associates. According to a report released from the FBI and in conjunction with an SEC investigation, which had been conducting their own investigation into mismanagement of funds at the firm and client allegations of fraud from a number of Brown’s clients, evidence shows that Brown had been embezzling vast amounts of money from his individual client accounts since he joined the firm in 1994. Brown allegedly skimmed in excess of three million dollars over the past five years. The majority of Brown’s clients are retired, live out of state, and have trusted him since he joined his father, the late Joseph Brown, at the firm in 1994, the same year the elder Brown died from a fall while vacationing in the Caribbean after tripping on a sidewalk as he returned to the vacation home he and his wife owned, hitting his head on the concrete pavement and suffering massive bleeding before going into a coma. The senior Brown opened the respected firm in 1969. At the time of his death, the managed assets of Brown & Associates were listed by the SEC at over one billion dollars.

The South Carolina State Police worked with FBI agents and SEC officials in locating Brown on Friday morning after his wife, Lily Park Brown, the only daughter of the late Senator Tommy Park, reported her husband missing. After numerous reports of Brown’s physical location, the authorities were led to the lighthouse on Sullivan’s Island, where Brown was sitting in a gray flannel suit, starched white shirt, and a perfectly-knotted silk tie, surrounded by an incoming tide that saturated the pillowcases filled with bundled money that encircled him. One FBI official noticed a revolver in Brown’s hand, and as he raised it and pointed it to his temple, the trained police German shepherd leapt through the air and seized the weapon, and Brown fell forward.

Attempts to contact Brown’s wife or any of the officials involved with the incident and apprehension have been futile.

Betsy reached inside her desk drawer and pulled out a pair of scissors. She cut out the newspaper article about her father, opened the finches’ birdcage, and slid the newspaper at the bottom, and then she waited until “Scout” and “Jem” and “Boo” and “Atticus” crapped all over the newsprint. The birds broke into their sweet singsong, and Betsy was overcome with anger. She wasn’t sure, though, whether she was angry with her father, with herself for carpeting the finches’ birdcage with the morning news, or with the finches for sounding so happy, when she felt anything but, as they flew with seeming madness from perch to perch.

Excerpt

Bear slowed past Boone Branch Creek, and a gravel drive split from the asphalt marked with a stenciled sign announcing Asylum Road. The drive dipped low into a bowl terminating at the bar. A hand-painted sign—white letters on a black board—hung over the front door. The painted letters reading The Asylum trailed down the board, like blood dripping from a wall. Were the dripping letters purposeful or the work of a sloppy painter? Either way, the ominous sign screamed “Go Away.” The stone buildings matched the sign with spaced red bulbs throwing an eerie light across its face. A faint glow emanated from dirt-caked windows as the sun dipped below the tree line and bloodied the sky.

“Jesus.” Jake leaned forward in his seat and studied the building as Bear rolled down the drive. “People go in there on purpose? I’ll give the owner credit for the name.”

Two scruffy bikers clad in Blood Devil vests over plaid flannel shirts smoked outside the front entrance, eyeballing Jake and Bear with hardened eyes. One flicked his cigarette toward Bear’s truck and disappeared inside.

Bear grabbed his cell phone. “So much for the element of surprise. I’d better call in and let Klages know where we are.”

“Backup?”

Bear pulled up his favorites on his phone and punched Klages’s name. “Nah. We’ll probably be okay.”

“Probably?”

“It’s better than maybe.”
