In her debut collection, Theresa Braun explores the inner workings of the human heart and what it is we most desire—forgiveness, acceptance, love, fame, or merely to escape who we really are. Whether we are battling ghosts, demons, mythical monsters, the past, or other dimensions, we are really facing the deepest parts of ourselves. These thirteen tales of horror and dark fantasy may appear to be a matter of good versus evil, but they are all a reflection of the hidden corners of the soul that are often shades of broken darkness. The characters in these stories must face their inner and outer terrors, or else suffer the consequences.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?

It’s a challenge to find the time to get the words on the page. Often, I have a bunch of ideas, but can’t get to them fast enough. And when I do, sometimes I sit with a sentence too long, trying to get it right. I’m trying to learn how to keep it moving and make those changes in the editing process.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?

Other than ‘80s music, I really love the Dark Synthwave genre, Daft Punk, and M83…

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

I do have a small group of critique/beta readers, as well as a few editors I trust. It’s interesting when they offer contradictory feedback, but it’s always helpful to get some additional eyes on a draft.

What book are you reading now?

Steve Stred’s Churn the Soil and Gwendolyn Kiste’s Reluctant Immortals are on my list, as is Hunter Shea’s Creature. I’ve got my eye on a few more. So much to read, not enough hours in the day!

How did you start your writing career?

I’ve been dabbling in all of the arts since birth… my 7th grade teacher said both my artwork (amateur cover design) and writing were good, putting it in the back of my mind to pursue it one day. It wasn’t until around 2000 that I finally decided to take myself more seriously and start submitting short stories to anthologies. That led to tackling longer works of fiction…

Tell us about your next release.

The novel I’m polishing off now is about a bride who’s started to notice something’s off with her Greek fiancé and his family. She’s got to figure it out before she and the love of her life are sacrificed to an ancient god. It’s sort of a mashup of Clash of the Titans and Ready or Not.
