Introduce yourself and tell me about what you do:
Hey, I’m Kerrie Biehl—writer, musician, wife, proud cat mom, and the emotional support human to my big, fluffy service dog, Strider. In my so-called "free time" (seriously, does that even exist?), I’m a lead vocalist who also rocks the violin, baritone ukulele, and mandolin—no, not all at once, but hey, maybe one day! You can catch me playing themed music at Renaissance Fairs, Pirate Festivals, and Fairy & Fantasy Fairs—yep, I absolutely dress the part for each one. These fests are where I get some of my wildest book inspiration.
Right now, I’m diving into the next book in the South Beach Crew series, *Death in the Deep*. Meanwhile, book 2, *Death by Fire*, just dropped (so grab a copy, hint hint!). And because my brain is always juggling a million things, I’m also working on a brand-new series—but no spoilers... yet.
Tell me more about your journey as an author, including the writing processes:
Ever since kindergarten, I’ve been *that girl* who knew she was destined to write. Picture this: little me, sitting cross-legged on the classroom floor, pink and purple construction paper in hand, and I’m scribbling out my very first masterpiece (and I use that term loosely), titled—wait for it—**A Romance Story**. Yeah, I still have it, and let me tell you, it’s a whole *vibe* of hilarity every time I look at it.
Fast forward to sixteen-year-old me, when I watched *Interview with a Vampire*—and boom, life changed. Suddenly, the paranormal world had me in its clutches, and I devoured every single book that even hinted at romance and the supernatural. Hooked? You bet.
Then came college (the first time around, because who doesn’t love a good educational rollercoaster?). I majored in criminal justice, working overnights, diving deep into assignments on terrorism and murder (yeah, those came with warnings like “don’t visit these websites unless you want a visit from the FBI”). Naturally, my brain was spinning all kinds of wild stories. So, what did I do? I started writing them down. And in 2006, I officially kicked off my career as a paranormal romance writer.
Before that, I was cranking out short stories under the pen name Serena Zane. But when readers started asking for longer stories, I said, “Challenge accepted.” I switched gears to full-length novels, using my real name—mostly because it made my mom *super* happy to see her daughter’s name splashed across a romance book. Gotta keep mom proud, right?
Now, as for my writing process, let’s just say I’m a certified Plantser. I love a good plot, but if my characters decide to veer off the path, I’m more than ready to buckle up and see where the ride takes me. I try to write every day, even if it’s just a little bit. Of course, distractions are *everywhere*, so I throw on my noise-canceling headphones, grab some snacks (and maybe a glass of dark red dessert wine), and dive headfirst into what I like to call “the Zone.”
When I’m in the Zone, my husband knows better than to disturb me. Music is my secret weapon—nothing gets me into a scene like the right soundtrack. If I’m writing an action scene, you better believe I’ve got Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC, or Kiss blasting in the background. And for those steamy moments? Oh, I’m turning up "Lick" by Joi. Sad scene? Cue "I Grieve" by Peter Gabriel. Music is life, and it absolutely fuels my writing vibe.
Tell me about your Book
I’m all about writing stories packed with suspense, sizzling sexual tension, jaw-dropping twists, and some serious character growth. I always tell people, “If murder, mayhem, and fated mates are your thing, welcome to your new obsession!” *Death by Blood* kicks off my South Beach Crew series with Det. Stephanie Wills and her “new” partner, Eric Black. They’re deep in the trenches of the narcotics department at South Beach PD—oh, and Eric’s a vampire enforcer for the High Council! Yeah, he’s got a lot more on his hot plate than just paperwork.
Without spoiling too much, let’s just say Shawna’s world gets "shaken up"—and not just by the case. As we dive into the lives of each character in the South Beach world, you’ll see them battle their own hang-ups, secrets, and challenges. Shawna has no clue that the paranormal world even exists (whoops), and then there’s Eric—caught between duty and a drug lord who hits way too close to home. Meanwhile, with the help of a mischievous fairy named Aryeth, Shawna starts uncovering some truths that rock her to the core.
The tension between Shawna and Eric? Yeah, it’s about as tight as a rubber band about to snap. Get ready for action, suspense, fated love, and some serious heat. I had a great time with Shawna and Eric, and look forward to bringing them into the other South Beach Crew books.
