One afternoon, A.J. returned home from school to find a surprise waiting for him in the barn - a beautiful little horse named Lady Star. She was now his to ride and care for. From that day on, A.J. spent all his free time learning how to ride Lady Star and caring for her. He dreamed of being skilled enough to ride alongside his grandfather, father, and Jon, the farm hand, during the cattle roundups.
Award-winning author Sherry Roberts weaves a heartfelt story about growing up in the 1930s and 1940s. Based on the tales passed down by her father, Just Call Me Pardner is a must-read for history lovers and those who enjoy stories of the American West.
What is the hardest part of writing your books?
For me, the hardest part of writing a
book is always coming up with the idea for the story. It doesn’t matter if it
is a picture book, chapter book series, or middle grade series.
What are your most played songs?
Oddly, I don’t listen to music when I
am writing. I have a tendency to sing along if music is playing and cannot
concentrate. I find it is easier for me to write to reruns of the TV show
“Golden Girls.” The rhythm of their banter will help me to focus. I have seen
all the shows in the series, so I don’t get caught up in the shows. For me,
sound is used as background to help me focus and not to become a part of my
writing.
Do you have critique partners or beta readers?
I have selected friends I will send my
manuscripts to or call and discuss my stories with as I’m writing. I Have used
Net Gallery to get readers and reviews. I have belonged to several different
critique groups throughout my writing career.
What book are you reading now?
Right now I am reading a cozy romcom.
I like Ava Miles and Joanne Demaio to name a few cozy romcom writers.
How did you start your writing career?
I’ve always enjoyed writing. I began
writing children’s picture books as a way to tell stories that I could relate
to that might help children in the same type of situation.
Tell us about your next release.
My next release is Book 2, Just
Look at Those Boots, in this series. It continues stories of A.J. and his
horse Lady Star. It is another story from my father of something that happened
to him and his horse.
