What is the hardest
part of writing your books?
The discipline to get started is
the worst part of the process for me. At the start, it seems like a process
that will never end. Once the first chapter has been written, though, things
settle down and get easier. Then it’s a matter of seeing how exciting the plot
you create can be.
What songs are most
played on your iPod?
No iPod in my office. I have Sirius
XM linked to my desktop, and you will find me listening to Garth Brooks, Frank
Sinatra, or instrumentalists on Escape. It all depends upon the mood – Garth
for the action parts, Sinatra and Escape for more mellow times.
Do you have critique
partners or beta readers?
I do, but not a particularly formal
group. They are people who read the first book and made suggestions. Now they
do it whenever there is a new book. I like their suggestions, because they tell
it like it is.
What book are you
reading now?
I have just started the new Clive
Cussler book, The Romanov Ransom. My
previous read was The Reckoning, by
John Grisham and I moved through that at a fast pace. If you are an avid
reader, a good book just keeps you going, and then when it’s over, you feel
sad.
How did you start
your writing career?
I believe I always loved to read .
. . or at least I remember reading when I was a very young boy. Books and
sports were my favorite things. I dreamed about writing for a newspaper, and
started by doing some sports stories for my hometown weekly newspaper. I could
not believe it when I got a job covering basketball tournaments for the Winona
Daily News my senior year in high school. Not sure how many times I re-wrote
that first story, but it was a lot.
Tell us about your
next release.
My fourth book features the same
two law officers that you have met in books one through three. This time they
are chasing moonshiners and cattle rustlers. Both my father and my
father-in-law were great storytellers, and they talked often about moonshine
and rustling. It just seemed fitting to use those messages as the heart of
another mystery, Death by Explosion.
About the Author
Gary Evans has turned his passion for novel writing into a post-retirement career, with book four soon to be released, and book five already in the works. Evans spent 30 years in Midwest newsrooms as an award-winning writer, editor, and publisher. He spent 12 years as vice president at Winona State University. He ended his career as the president and CEO of Hiawatha Broadband Communication, one of the nation’s first alternative entrant telecommunications firms, after 15 years. Married to Ellen, they have two grown children, Gregory and Natalie.
