INTERVIEW
Introduce yourself and tell me about what you do.
My name is Steve Rice. I grew up in Northern New York not far from the Canadian border. I moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota to attend Hamline University. I’ve lived in and around Saint Paul since. I worked a variety of jobs including as a professional driver and high school coach before going back to school to learn computer programming. There I met my wife, Trish. We married and both worked a variety of computer programming jobs before starting our own company, Rice Software. After six years, we both took opportunities with our largest clients. We have two children who are now starting their own families. I continue to develop software as a consultant. I’ve always had an interest in writing. Most of my life has been spent writing code. Prior to writing Blues Jam, I had spent some time writing short stories.
Tell me more about your journey as an author, including the writing processes.
I’ve always had an interest in writing. When I was younger, I had thoughts of pursuing a career as a writer. I put those desires aside as I found my way as a computer programmer. Over the last several years as I’ve rediscovered my love of writing, I’ve learned that for me creating a story is like designing and writing software. I’ve been able to plan the story but also have been willing to be flexible taking it from design to implementation. Feedback from beta readers has been useful the way feedback from beta users has been with software.
Tell me about your Book
My book, Blues Jam, is a story of Sarah, a young woman, and her family as they navigate life. Music and particularly blues music is a source of inspiration and stability as Sarah overcomes loss and battles addiction.

About the Author
Stephen was born and raised in Henderson, NY. He moved to Saint Paul, MN to attend Hamline University. After working a variety of jobs, he began a career as a computer programmer. An interest in writing words preceded his interest in writing code.
