Bestselling Irish writer, Faith Hogan, has created another gripping saga of friendship, betrayal and secrets in this story of a widow in search of answers to a shocking confession by her dying husband.

Joy Blackwood has no idea why her French art dealer husband has left a valuable painting to a woman called Robyn Tessier in Ballycove, a small town on the west coast of Ireland, but she is determined to find out.

She arrives in Ballycove to find that Robyn runs a rather chaotic and unprofitable bookshop. She is shy, suffering from unrequited love for dashing Kian, and badly in need of advice on how to make the bookshop successful.

As Joy becomes entangled in the daily dramas of Ballycove, uncovering the secrets behind her husband's painting grows increasingly challenging. When she finally musters the courage to confront the truth, her revelation sends shockwaves through the tight-knit community she's grown to love.

INTERVIEW

What is the hardest part of being a writer?

I have to say, I’m one of those writers who loves getting to put a story down. Of course, there are days when it’s not possible to get to the desk and if I go too long without getting a chance to write, especially if I’m in the middle of something that’s difficult. On the other hand, I know I’m really lucky to be able to call this my job, so, it’s hard to find very much to complain about most days!

What are your most played songs?

I tend to write and work in silence. I’ve never been one of those people who has a soundtrack to each book, very often, I hear the characters voices as I write and that’s hugely important to me. On the other hand, I love music and each day when I walk the dog, I look forward to having something to listen to for company – my tastes are eclectic, anything from Tchaikovsky to Weezer – I like music with a beat!

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?

No, I’m afraid not, writing for me is a solitary thing – I get my ideas down, play around them for a while and then the book goes to my agent, who generally has a few suggestions – from there my editor gets to read and the whole editing and publishing process begins in earnest!

What book are you reading now?

I’m going through a bit of a retro phase at the moment, jumping between Penelope Lively, Rose Tremain and Isabel Allend – I read a lot of books for other writers coming up to their publication day, so it’s nice to catch up on my long standing TBR pile when there’s a gap. I’ve just finished reading How It All Began, by Penelope Lively and I adored it!

How did you start your writing career?

I’ve always written, poetry, short stories, radio plays, but my first traditional contract came about when I moved from writing crime fiction over to women’s fiction. I’ve since gone back and written more crime, but my main focus is on contemporary women’s fiction – which is just a joy to write.

Tell us about your next release.

My next book is due out in 2025 – currently very much under wraps, it’s slightly darker than The Bookshop Ladies, but it will be an uplifting read too (really!) I’m currently working on edits for it and very, very pleased with how it’s taking shape!
