Fading into unconsciousness, Christian watches psychotic thugs drag his sister-in-law and nephew away to suffer in the city they just escaped. Left for dead near his brother’s corpse, he has but one hope for survival, rely on the pretty stranger who stumbled across him. Not exactly smart after the apocalypse.
Encumbered by the lingering effects of her own violent past, Chloe struggles against her need for independence. Trusting a stranger found lying in the snow is risky, to say the least. Yet, she patches him up.
As they strive to rebuild their hearts, the harsh world they’ve been thrust into promises to tear them apart. Because Christian’s rescue attempt can’t wait. Every second in Chloe’s idyllic hometown means another second of pain for Christian’s family, leaving Chloe with a choice. Risk her life to help Christian save his family? Or condemn them all to a slow death?

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?
Balancing life with writing and not planning scenes too far in advance. When I first start writing a new book, I want so badly to dive right in and devote every waking second to it. Life doesn’t really allow for that, though, so I have to write around work and other commitments. Meanwhile, I have to keep myself from writing the entire thing in my head. I’m a hardcore pantser. If I plan too much or know exactly how a book will end, I tend to lose interest.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?
This is a really difficult question to answer. I have OCD, which lends itself unfortunately well to circular thoughts. It also lends itself to putting a song on repeat and listening to the same song for hours on end. I have a whole playlist of songs that work really well for this because the end and beginning are similar, and they just kinda make time disappear. While I’m writing, if I find a song that fits a given scene, I’ll listen to it throughout writing the scene, regardless of how long it takes. If I find one that fits a book in general, I may listen to it, exclusively, for several writing sessions. I tend to jump genres with music and make lengthy playlists for each book. Which project I’m working on decides what songs I’m looping. Currently, I’m editing A Heart of Salt & Silver (the playlist is public on Google Play, so I’ll share a link below). The songs I’ve taken to looping for this one are “Various Storms and Saints” by Florence and the Machine, “Hurt for Me” by SYML, “Hands on the Bible” by Local H, and “Chasing Ghosts” by The Eden Project. But that’ll change when I finish this round of edits and switch projects.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?
I have beta readers. I have a few select people that I send everything to. One is an electrician and a speed reader who combs the manuscripts multiple times over. One is studying psychology. One is an artist, and another is a fellow writer. They have different backgrounds and each one looks at the story from a slightly different viewpoint. They also don’t mind hopping from one genre to another, which is good because I write across many genres.

What book are you reading now?
The Unspoken Name by A.K. Larkwood
I’m about 40% of the way through it, but I may reread Highland Fire by Elizabeth Thornton alongside it.

How did you start your writing career?
I began writing as most do, with assignments in school, though I tended to write darker stories than my fellow students. As life tried its damnedest to break me, writing became a coping mechanism, a way for my emotions to bleed out of me. It wasn’t until my first semester of college that I wrote a full-length novel (lost to computer failure in the days before cloud storage), and even then I didn’t take myself seriously as a writer. That took many more years. Unfortunately, even that was riddled with misfortune and mistakes. Unwittingly falling prey to a vanity press takes a lot out of you, but eventually I got that book back. After deciding to pursue indie publishing rather than traditional, I even re-released my debut through a reputable self-publishing company. I’ve had my nose to the grindstone ever since. World for the Broken is my fourth published work, the third since October.

Tell us about your next release.
After World for the Broken, I’ll be releasing A Heart of Salt & Silver, a dark supernatural high fantasy romance. It’s gritty and emotional, and it doesn’t pull punches, which is kind-of my style.
Like my other books, it’s character driven. These people go through hell, and they face the full consequences of their decisions. Packed with demons and werewolves, witches and vampires, gods and magic, set in a different world and chock full of romantic tension, this book blends a lot of genres. Which… I love.
